@MikeReiss: Breaking down snaps played by Patriots defenders in season-opening loss, as Rob Ninkovich plays complementary role. http://t.co/07adx4mTRp

Dont'a Hightower -- 74 of 74
Chandler Jones -- 70 of 74
Vince Wilfork -- 50 of 74
Sealver Siliga -- 41 of 74
Rob Ninkovich -- 35 of 74
Joe Vellano -- 32 of 74
Dominique Easley -- 27 of 74
Quick-hit thought: Ninkovich played 95 percent of the defensive snaps in 2013, so seeing him in a part-time role caught the eye, as he was taken off the field in sub packages and replaced by cornerback Kyle Arrington. The Patriots seemed to miss his pass-rush abilities at times in sub. Noticed more of Hightower playing toward the line of scrimmage instead of in a cover-based role, which appears to play better to his strengths.

OFF-THE-LINE LINEBACKER:
Jerod Mayo
-- 74 of 74
Jamie Collins -- 73 of 74

Quick-hit thought: Collins looked like his gas tank was on empty by the end of the game.

SECONDARY:
Devin McCourty
-- 73 of 74
Darrelle Revis -- 65 of 74
Alfonzo Dennard -- 50 of 74
Patrick Chung -- 47 of 74
Kyle Arrington -- 31 of 74
Malcolm Butler -- 27 of 74
Tavon Wilson -- 22 of 74
Logan Ryan -- 18 of 74
Duron Harmon -- 4 of 74
Nate Ebner -- 1 of 74

Thoughts?

- Ninkovich playing less than 50% of the snaps is inexcusable. No wonder the run D/pass rush suffered.
- Chung as the clear cut S2, ugh.
- Logan Ryan relegated to CB5. What happened to him?
- Harmon has been Tavon Wilson'd in his 2nd year for game 1.

Ouch on all of those, especially the first. Bizarre.

Pat Chung playing 47 snaps to 18 for Logan Ryan? WTF.

One of the many baffling decisions the coaching staff made before/during this game.

As far as Nink goes, do we really want a 30=year-old DE/LB taking 95%+ of snaps?

Ninkovich dinged up his shoulder early in the 3rd quarter. Not sure how his snaps break down by half but that may have had something to do with it.

Chung being the primary SS doesn't surprise me even though many on this board thought he would get cut. It just goes to show that none of the other players on the roster are better, which is kinda sad. Hopefully Ryan improves to become a starter (and he'd likely only get a starter opp at SS).

I'd like to see Wilfork stay at the 50 snap mark for most of the season -- we should try to save his wear & tear so he doesn't slow down at playoff time.

Hopefully Easley can become a probowl caliber player and fill the starting role

Insane that we tried to play; Mayo, Hightower and Collins every play. Of course, we have no depth there.

Oh, and why are we back to the 3-4? You drafted Chandler Jone who is. RDE in a 4-3. You drafted Easley who is. 3-tech DT.

If you're gonna run a 3-4, put Hightower at ILB and move him outside on third down. Good players all three. I'm not sure they are being used correctly,

Zach Moore active. Zach Moore defensive snaps ZERO.

Not trying to be facetious when I ask this: who would you have had him come in for?

I'm not saying we don't need "moar Ninko."

I'm just saying there needs to be a happy medium between yesterday and 2013.

My concern is that this new defense experiment isn't actually working out. Maybe it is too soon to call it but I really don't want to see this same defense next week. Maybe situationally but to run this way as a primary scheme doesn't seem to be working out.

32 too many imo.

Will be completely baffled if the team doesn't revert back to the 4-3.

Bring Quarles to the 53 and if Chris Jones is healthy bye bye Vellano or at least hello gameday inactive list.

Let Nink and Jones rush the QB from their natural positions, unlike yesterday. Give me a 2 DT rotation of Wilfork, SIliga, Jones, Easely, and Quarles and i'm almost certain it will be night and day of what we saw yesterday.

I don't think it is. We don't have 3-4 defensive ends, and I don't think anyone on the roster is going to magically blossom into one any time soon.

Chung and Vellano's snap counts are worrisome. Hopefully Vellano's just (poorly) occupying space until Chris Jones and/or Easley are ready. They won't change the fact that the Pats need to stop messing around with a 3-4 with this personnel, but at least they'll be better at what Vellano does (poorly) in a 4-3.

Even if that is all he's doing, I'd still rather they call up Quarles to play in his place. Sure, he's a rookie UDFA who has only been with the team for a week, but all he has to do is be better than Ray Vellano. I'm sure he can manage. It doesn't matter how well Vellano knows his assignments if he sucks too badly to execute any of them.

I wouldn't say Ryan is the CB5 now. It looks more like Arrington and Ryan are splitting nickel reps and Butler and Dennard are splitting outside CB2 reps.

It looks like the CB depth chart looks sort of like this:

CB1: Revis
CB2: Dennard/Butler
Slot: Arrington/Ryan

The way we are playing the 34 is pretty much the same way we play the 43.
All this griping about Jones being a 34 DE is pointless, because his job is exactly the same whether its a 34 or 43. This is not the 2gap 34 circa 2003.
The difference is that we shift the DTs to over the C and T instead of the Gs, and move the LBs accordingly.

Not sure any combination would have worked better, sometimes when you shyt the bed, you shyt the bed..

We sucked from the third quarter on... imo the three roughing the passer penalties took the life out of this defense...
