Patriots No. 1 team in Boston and New England

The Patriots are the standard of excellence in this area, and every other team aspires to the success they enjoyed... the Red Sox have had a good run, but no where as good what the Pats have experienced...

For a very long time the Pats were #2, however their marketing and product have vaulted them to the lead... even the baseball shows have a mix of Patriots, which can be painful.

The key question is, once brady retires, will the pats continue to be number 1?

Nice article but Football - Baseball - Basketball - Hockey - Soccer is fairly representative of the country.

some will even say that auto racing comes in 3rd ....... I think they are right.

Okay??

How's this: I live out of state too and every time I see someone wearing Sox gear, I ask if they are from NE/Boston.

The majority of the time, the answer is yes.

So what now? Debate over? Again, please provide EVIDENCE that this is the case. You'll forgive me if I don't exactly take your word for it.

Im sure there are pockets of the country where that's true. Bostonians/NEs have relocated to that state in numbers. Like NYers do in FLA.

Evidence? I share what I experience.

it makes sense though...right now the only two good teams in boston are the Bruins and the Patriots.

its their prolonged success that makes the Pats number one since Boston/new england loves their successful sports teams.

red sox stink this year
, and the celtics are in the midst of a long rebuild after having success from 2007-2012

The Red Sox failed to win a world championship in 86 years, but still had die hard fans that filled up the baseball park. The Red Sox are a roller coaster that's always embroiled in some sort of controversy or drama.

Bandwagon and Red Sox never went together to my recollection, but maybe times have changed.

To the point back on page 1 that you can't write the history of Boston without the Red Sox.....this is very true. Red Sox history (winning the first WS in 1903) obviously dwarfs the history of a team born in 1960. History is a funny thing though. France was once a world super power. Disco was once cool. Bo Derek was once hot. And I once had a full head of hair. History.

Speaking of the history of Boston...consider the city's questionable history of racial disharmony. There is no better team to represent that aspect of history than the Red Sox. What a joke the franchise was for a LONG time, due mostly to its refusal to soil its field with black players. And what a piece of garbage Tom Yawkey was. Red Sox fans would be well advised to focus on the team's impressive present (this year notwithstanding) than its shameful past. Unfortunately for Red Sox fans, football is the king of sports and baseball is, well, history.

As my 99 year old grandfather says, "They moved the wrong team out of Boston." As dysfunctional as the Braves could be, the Red Sox were worse.

Why is this whole thing even an issue? The insecurity of some people amazes me.

Who said it is an "issue"? It's not an "issue." It's not a contest either. It's a freaking OBSERVATION! There is no need trying to make it something it clearly isn't. The intentional misperceptions by some people amaze me.

You're right. I should have said why would anyone possibly care who's number one.

Ive seen too many Red Sox people.

Let me get this straight?

Fans of a baseball team that had not won a world series championship since Babe Ruth was traded are suddenly going to jump ship because the Red Sox had a bad post WS Championship season (which is typical for them) and because the their roster just doesn't wow anybody right now?

Don't see it.

Maybe you missed it, but they have won 3 since he was traded.

You cant tell the story about Boston without including the RS and Fenway.

But you can without the Patriots.

You can't tell the story about Boston without including the Mayor Curley, Whitey Bulger and Dapper O'Neil.

None of them mean a damn thing in 2014 or the future either.

If they have a QB that can win games...of course they will stay #1....they have tony romo back there....droooooop

I'd really like to know what truly motivates anyone to feel the need to denigrate any of our local teams vs.others. I'm guessing we all have teams, owners, players, fan bases, etc. that we like and dislike more than others. When the argument can be made that every one of our teams is, has been, and will be again elite and make us proud, why the need to pit one against the others? What's the motivation to, out of the blue, without evident provocation, dump on a team and, as a byproduct, its fans? There are people whose opinions I genuinely respect and enjoy reading (yes, you Tunescribe) who seem to be always part of this stuff and I really don't know why that is.

I just don't like baseball and the millions of red Sox pink hat fans. All over the place.

And the other teams don't have millions of "pink hat fans?". In my estimation, the Bruins lead the universe in that category. But, that doesn't cause me to castigate the team and their fans to the point of starting a thread trying to prove that they're not worthy of being rooted for and enjoyed.

Excellent point.

Why don't you ask The Boston Globe that question?

Why don't you ask the Herald's Ron Borges, and past Herald scribes such as Felger, Mazzarrotti, Kevin Mannix, et al? Oh, and we should all be fans of John Tomase, right?

Bruins aren't even close to red sox pink hats...

If you go to a Bs game...85% of people know the game...players ect. Go to a sox game? what does it mean when they have 3 balls?

The difference is that, with the Herald, the anti-Patriot bias is not systemic - - it comes from certain individuals. The Herald is the Isle of Lost Toys - - the screw ups end up there and do what they do best - - screw up. (And, btw, Massarotti has been with the Globe since 2008).

With the Globe it is corporate policy and it infects all sections of the paper, including it's Editorial section, Business section, Metro section and most virulently - - their Sunday magazine.

The situation is pretty well known amongst local readers.
