Kerry Collins, followed by Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky.

And the Colts paid Collins $4M for his 0-3 record as a starter.

They waited too long to bring in Collins, so he wasn't ready. I don't know if Polian was just too confident in Manning's recovery, too panicked to prepare for it earlier, or just willing to fall on the sword in order for the Colts to get Luck in a worst case scenario.

none of that, Deus...they brought in Collins because he was a drinking partner of Jim Irsay's.

I'm really disappointed and surprised that this is all the league says he's worth. However I'm really excited that BB thinks JG is so mature that he's ready to be the backup. That's the real story for me in BB taking such a low price.

Really all this comes down to is that Belichick was probably more interested in keeping Mallett off the waiver wires and away from an AFC East team

Smart move.

Overall, consider that a good NFL backup these days costs about $3 million a season.

Mallett (and now Garoppolo) cost about that much for their entire 4 year rookie contracts!

Instead of clogging up the salary cap with that figure each year, Belichick has used a 3rd and now 2nd round draft pick which costs him the amount other teams pay PER SEASON for the ENTIRE 4 YEAR CONTRACT

Meanwhile in drafting a capable backup, not only is he saving about $12 million in cap space over a 4 year contract, he's also able to go with 2 rather than 3 QBs on the active roster - allowing him to use the cap savings and the roster spot to fill another position

Most fans of other teams just can't comprehend this - but they don't need to. Belichick does.

Those clueless fans should be asked which they think is smarter. Signing Chase Daniel as a backup to a 3 year $10 million contract with nearly $5 million guaranteed

OR

Or expending a 3rd round QB to a 4 year $2.9 million contract with $800,000 guaranteed

That's smart football. Heck, I'd even be ok with it if Belichick used a 2nd round pick on a rookie QB for a 4 year $3 million total contract - especially if that guy could become a starter for the Pats in the future.

They know who they are so I do not need to single out people.

Any criticism whatsoever of Belichick gets their panties in a bunch. This Mallet thing did nothing to help Brady and the Pats win another Championship over the last 3 seasons. The only thing it does now is open a roster spot.

Lmao, can't produce so much as a single post of substance. Unbelievable. Really really weak but also unbelievable.

I will not go there, but I will point out some of those that dare to speak out like I.

Dues will. Capt Stone. STCJones.

Whooooooooo "dare to speak out...." You and Mandela and Captain Stone and the other courageous souls of our time have much to be proud of. I can only imagine how much courage it takes for you to come here day after day after day and take little squirty craps in this forum. Most would never dare to tread that dangerous path but you take it on like a champ. Fine work say I, counterbalance that homer circlejerk Triumph, you were born to do it.

Agreed. This looks like a good fit.
Agree. I saw a few posts claiming Belichick was helping O'Brien out but I don't believe he would ever deliberately help an opposing coach out regardless of friendship, on the other hand i do think that if all offers were equal that he may have sent Mallett to Houston over Dallas because it offered Mallett a better opportunity for success than Dallas would have. BOB knows Mallett and Mallett knows his system and he wouldn't have to deal with the mess that is the Cowboys.
Agree.

I've never thought of Belichick as cold-hearted, just focused and pragmatic. All things being equal, I believe that he'd rather see players succeed than fail. He also seems to develop a respect, even liking, for his players who give 110% and have a good attitude.

So, yes, I could see him sending a hard-working guy like Mallett to the team where he thought he'd have a better chance for success, if both outcomes were equal for the Pats. That also means that he'd never send him somewhere if he thought the result would strengthen a Conference, let alone Division, rival unless there was a significant upside for the Patriots.

The only issue with this is that BB felt the same way about Mallett when he let Hoyer go. Now he's willing to let Mallett go for Garropolo. Could be a good sign, but it feels to me more like the backup position behind Brady is fairly fungible.

Don't think BB coaches with that mindset. He has said a few times he is not a fan of tanking on any season.

Well, I'll save Triumph the trouble. I'm a homer, you bet.

Every year, this team keeps me on the edge of my seat while most other fans have given up by the time December begins (many by the turn of November). Hard to ask for more.

The Red Sox have won 3 titles in the last 10 years, surpassing the Patriots, but they have not been nearly as enjoyable because of the awful years sprinkled in all over the place. I love what the Pats have done.

Personally, my opinion, Mallett worked out to be a very solid pick. He filled a needed role through three years on the cheap (rookie deal). Whether or not he could have performed when it mattered, we, thankfully, never learned, but apparently the coaching staff believed he could.

And we saved millions each year on the cap. So I think it a win.

If BB does it, it must be right, right? Well, not exactly - I've got a list of things that bug me about this year, where I disagree with the choice (see Kelly, Tommy and the Gallon pick, for example). I think Kelly will outperform almost everyone on the Pats DL - Wilfork and Chandler as the only exceptions - this year. And heck, if he pushed Sopoaga off the roster, did we even save money?

I say all that with the humility to admit that I didn't watch him in practice, or have game tape of his every PS snap, or have access to the medical reports of how his old legs are expected to hold up come the December winds.

I guess because I admit that lack of information, I'm a homer. Okay, I can live with that.

Unfortunately he hasn't yet realized that possessing the courage to speak out when 99% of what he says is, to put it politely, thoughtless garbage, isn't the virtue he thinks it is.

We may get that 6th because with the extension they gave to Watt I believe Mallet chances of starting raised because they will need to free cap space for the future, so if Mallet plays good football they will likely extend him in a cap friendly deal that will set their position for at least some 2 or 3 years, developing Savage in the meantime. There's already some other teams adopting the Russell Wilson formula, if you don't have a top franchise QB, use your chips in a game manager QB and spend the money around him.

If that's correct they will need to see what they have in Mallet, because he's either extended or cut at the end of the season. 4 weeks as a backup to learn the playbook and get some chemistry with the new teammates and them he assumes against that crappy Dallas defense, bumping his stats and motivation...unless Fitzmagic all of a sudden becomes decent.

Their first 4 games are:
Redskins
at Oakland
at Giants
Bills

2-2 is very reasonable to expect, if they suck badly then I don't know what to expect.

Right on the money, and every time he is challenged to produce any post of substance he is completely unable to do so. Imo he's a troll, period but he gets away with it. I can take posters who are critical and make substantive arguments to back up their positions, which is what Deus and some others do, but the ones who only pop in to take little dumps and run away are just a blight on this place and should be terminated. That's just my opinion and unfortunately I am guessing "Triumph" will continue to come in here and post his little squirts when he feels like it. The fact that he's 100% wrong won't deter him as the fact that the Patriots have clearly been the most successful team of this era means nothing to him, as apparently being the best simply translates to sucking for him. he has been challenged to back it up and produce the list of teams who have done more while overturning 90%+ of their rosters but can't do so, which is just another epic fail on his part.

to tell you the truth RC...I thought Major Applewhite was some kind of fruit liquer...heh

Either a fruit liquor or a Gilbert and Sullivan character ;)

Tom Savage has looked absolutely lost and Case Keenum was cut.

Fail.
Fitzpatrick, the starter, says hello.
Savage completed 73% of his preseason passes.
You are, once again, just wrong.

For anyone who's really upset, here's a mental exercise to ease your mind a bit:

Compare the relative experiences of the Pats drafting Mallett in the 3rd, never needing him, and trading him for a conditional 6th/7th

versus

(1) the Jets experience with Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, or (2) the disastrous and expensive roster situation the Bills are enjoying with EJ Manuel; or (3) the Dolphins wasting second-round pick after second-round pick on QBs

There... isn't that better?

Exactly. I would also like to pose the question: "What is the long term plan at Quarterback, after (God postpone the day) we no longer have our GOAT around?" Let's think of the options:

1. Is it to go through the scenario that the Colts did, turn into a near-winless joke, and hope for a number one pick in a year that an Andrew Luck is available? That doesn't sound like BB's philosophy of long term organizational competitiveness.

2. Is it to try the follow the plan of our other division rivals, the Jets, Bills, or Dolphins and devote numerous number one draft picks or trade number two's for veterans? That plan has eaten up their high draft picks, and by the way, how is it working for them?

3. Or, do we roll the dice every couple of years in the second or third round on a quarterback, save $5M/yr or so on a veteran back-up, and by that repeated rolling of the dice (with scouting, of course) hope that by the law of averages we eventually find a respectable (if not TB level) replacement down the road for TB. What other plan offers a better hope for success, while not using up our highest draft picks during our Super Bowl window with TB?

A 6th round pick is going to be more useful to us when Mallet leaves after the season, so I don't see why anyone would be against this.

Besides, Mallett has not justified a higher compensation based on how he's played when given the opportunity.
