And I said so, the moment it was made.
Loudly.
There's nothing wrong with admitting that smart men ~ Mad Bill, in this case ~ make Dumb *** Mistakes.
That doesn't mean that he ~ Mad Bill ~ isn't the best we've ever had.
I diddnt like the pic, but given the outcome, which was money laid out and the ability to just have Mallet be the backup while opening up another roster spot, I guess it worked out.
It seems like it was an insurance pic rather than trying to use a 3rd rounder to replace Brady or develop and trade. TB never wants to come out of the game, so the "Ryan Mallet will never take a meaningful snap for the Pats" crews (I being one of them) was right.
But that is not how insurance works.
If he doesn't stick in HOU someone else will look at him. Mallett received outstanding coaching in NE and that will help him as it did Hoyer and Cassell.
In all Fairness, I should point out that ~ in a Vacuum, based on Trades that were actually made but reasonably reflect what I would've done ~ I would've parlayed #74 into #90, #182, and #191, and drafted CB Curtis Marsh, OT Will Yeatman, and XE Brett Brackett...none'f whom've done squat in the NFL.
Even so, I stand by my original Position: Burning #74 on a GunSlinger who even I, without any Scout to discuss the matter with, knew was a Bad Bet to be a succesfull NFL QuarterBack, when you could've picked up 3 guys who, yeah, were Up Against It but had ~ and still have, even at this Late Hour ~ a shot at making an Impact, and then spent a Late Rounder on a genuine Field General who had a better Chance of winning a Game in January than a guy like Mallett...was inexcusably foolish.
Richard Sherman was drafted about 70 spots after Mallet.
Would have been nice to have a CB like him. Jordon Cameron and Julius Thomas were also drafted after Mallet.

And this is what separates OTG from the draftniks who simply bash Belichick, rather than tell us all about the Pro Bowlers he would have drafted at that time he actually tells us about those he would have taken who didn't make the grade. I have a good deal of respect for this OTG, unlike the draft geniuses who routinely tell us how they would have taken Richard Sherman or Antonio brown etc.. etc..., when in truth their binkies are already long gone but they would never admit it.
I really wish the draft forum were archived in such a way where we could go back and look at who they really would have taken.
Say what? BB decided that The Hammah was adequate as a backup. Teams like Buffalo are pissing away several million in cap $ for expensive vet BACKUPS (Orton). Using cap efficient QBs as backup allowed the Pats to sign guys as FAs or renew their players.
The "turn him onto a 1st/2nd rounder" was fanboy fantasy, not BB's objective.
Belichick's recent approach is fine, as long as Brady plays every game. Mallett was as capable as the next guy, when it comes to holding a clipboard. If the Patriots had needed to win a game or two while Brady overcame a bruised shoulder or something, Mallett would probably have had us all wishing BB had dropped the $5 million for a better backup.

Meh. Those $5mm backups are pretty terrible. I'd rather just keep rolling through cheap rookies and hoping one pans out. I didn't think 2011 (or 2008 for that matter) was the time to invest a 3rd rounder but it makes some sense considering how important the position is.

Mallett has a head start on the other 2 QB's there in that he knows the offense that BOB is installing. I wouldn't be suprised to see him leapfrog Savage on the depth chart and eventually getting a chance once Fitzpatrick hits a bad streak as he always seems to do.
The Mallett draft pick was terrible all around, including from the point of being sensible or not. Hoyer was already on the team. And, while you bag on those $5mm backups, Orton can win games, and he has. Mallett had a hard time moving the ball against the future valets of America.
