Report: Ryan Mallett Traded to Houston for late pick

It was a Damned Fool Pick the moment it was made.

And I said so, the moment it was made.

Loudly.

There's nothing wrong with admitting that smart men ~ Mad Bill, in this case ~ make Dumb *** Mistakes.

That doesn't mean that he ~ Mad Bill ~ isn't the best we've ever had.

I diddnt like the pick, but given the outcome, which was money laid out and the ability to just have Mallet be the backup while opening up another roster spot, I guess it worked out.

It seems like it was an insurance pic rather than trying to use a 3rd rounder to replace Brady or develop and trade. TB never wants to come out of the game, so the "Ryan Mallet will never take a meaningful snap for the Pats" crew (I being one of them) was right.

But that is not how insurance works.

I said the same thing. I hated the Mallet pick both as a player and a position.

In fairness, though, I could just say I hate every pick and I'll be right a little more than half the time. :)

Agreed. Complaining that you didn't get anything out of a backup QB when you have Brady is like whining that you haven't gotten anything out of your life insurance yet.

I too HATED the Mallett pick at the time but in retrospect it did provide us with an acceptable to BB backup for 3 seasons saving many millions of cap $ so we could sign FAs or renew vets like...Arrington. Well, maybe it's not as good as I'd thought after all.

I don't see how this pick isn't a bust, but when you make as many picks as BB does with our huge stash of picks there's gonna be busts. We would have been in big trouble with Mallett filling in for Brady imo (although perhaps he'll show otherwise in Houston). Not gonna try to pretend it's a fantastic trade but we got something for a guy who was going to be cut so I'll take it. Really confident in Jimmy and glad BB is too.

If he doesn't stick in HOU someone else will look at him. Mallett received outstanding coaching in NE and that will help him as it did Hoyer and Cassell.

Mallett has a head start on the other 2 QB's there in that he knows the offense that BOB is installing. I wouldn't be suprised to see him leapfrog Savage on the depth chart and eventually getting a chance once Fitzpatrick hits a bad streak as he always seems to do.

In all Fairness, I should point out that ~ in a Vacuum, based on Trades that were actually made but reasonably reflect what I would've done ~ I would've parlayed #74 into #90, #182, and #191, and drafted CB Curtis Marsh, OT Will Yeatman, and XE Brett Brackett...none'f whom've done squat in the NFL.

Even so, I stand by my original Position: Burning #74 on a GunSlinger who even I, without any Scout to discuss the matter with, knew was a Bad Bet to be a succesfull NFL QuarterBack, when you could've picked up 3 guys who, yeah, were Up Against It but had ~ and still have, even at this Late Hour ~ a shot at making an Impact, and then spent a Late Rounder on a genuine Field General who had a better Chance of winning a Game in January than a guy like Mallett...was inexcusably foolish.

And this is what separates OTG from the draftniks who simply bash Belichick, rather than tell us all about the Pro Bowlers he would have drafted at that time he actually tells us about those he would have taken who didn't make the grade. I have a good deal of respect for this OTG, unlike the draft geniuses who routinely tell us how they would have taken Richard Sherman or Antonio brown etc.. etc..., when in truth their binkies are already long gone but they would never admit it.

I really wish the draft forum were archived in such a way where we could go back and look at who they really would have taken.

I can think of one troll in particular who has only picked Hall of Fame caliber players while Belichick picks scrubs but for some reason has never been seen in the draft forum making those choices at the time, but stil;l bats 1,000% in hindsight.

Richard Sherman was drafted about 70 spots after Mallet.

Would have been nice to have a CB like him. Jordon Cameron and Julius Thomas were also drafted after Mallet.

Wow.

You overwhelm me, Brother Ivan.

That may be the greatest Compliment I've ever received around these parts...

And many of you have been very kind, indeed.

Thank you, my Brother.

*I have indeed laid the groundwork for pulling forward my own hilarious Mock Drafts, going back to 2010, and will follow through in the months and Years to come, to the Amusement of us all!!

*And I have also initiated "BackDrafts" or "Final Exams" ~ Post-Draft "Mocks" that correspond with the way the Drafts actually played out. Nobody at all responded in 2013, but many Brave Souls Stepped Up And Put It On The Line this Year, and I'm hoping that that's just the Beginning!! :D

Say what? BB decided that The Hammah was adequate as a backup. Teams like Buffalo are pissing away several million in cap $ for expensive vet BACKUPS (Orton). Using cap efficient QBs as backup allowed the Pats to sign guys as FAs or renew their players.

The "turn him onto a 1st/2nd rounder" was fanboy fantasy, not BB's objective.

Belichick's recent approach is fine, as long as Brady plays every game. Mallett was as capable as the next guy, when it comes to holding a clipboard. If the Patriots had needed to win a game or two while Brady overcame a bruised shoulder or something, Mallett would probably have had us all wishing BB had dropped the $5 million for a better backup.

Meh. Those $5mm backups are pretty terrible. I'd rather just keep rolling through cheap rookies and hoping one pans out. I didn't think 2011 (or 2008 for that matter) was the time to invest a 3rd rounder but it makes some sense considering how important the position is.

There must be a Triumph on every other message board ripping some coach for not drafting Brady and drafting one of 198 players before him.

The Mallett draft pick was terrible all around, including from the point of being sensible or not. Hoyer was already on the team. And, while you bag on those $5mm backups, Orton can win games, and he has. Mallett had a hard time moving the ball against the future valets of America.

Heh. I give the Bills 4 games before Orton is that starter.

The reports I've seen have said Savage has been pretty awful and is looking like a long term prospect at best.

Mallett sucked. That doesn't mean every rookie will suck. I just don't see a $4mm difference between your average 4th round QB and whatever backup dregs are floating around, particularly when you get to keep the rookie for 4 years if he proves worthy.

We never saw Mallett play as a starter - practicing with the first team and executing a game plan tailored to his strengths and weaknesses. My guess is that (like Matt Cassel), he'd probably play a bit better than we would have thought.

Not to say that Mallet could have done it, but I expect you would have said exactly the same thing preseaon 2008.

For anyone who's really upset, here's a mental exercise to ease your mind a bit:

Compare the relative experiences of the Pats drafting Mallett in the 3rd, never needing him, and trading him for a conditional 6th/7th

versus

(1) the Jets experience with Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, or (2) the disastrous and expensive roster situation the Bills are enjoying with EJ Manuel

There... isn't that better?
