Don't you think that BOB will extend Mallet sooner than later if Mallet wants to show what he has?

Don't know. Lots of factors at play. One factor it's dependent on how Fitzpatrick turns out as he is signed thru 2015 and Savage thru 2017 so you have two QBs under contract next year. Other factors are obviously how Savage develops, how Mallett practices/plays and if they draft/sign a QB for the 2015 season. If Mallett shows a ton in practice, maybe BOB signs him to a backup QB deal??

Why would he do that, a hunch??

Alternatively the Patriots release Mallett and receive nothing in return. Mallett was a depreciating asset. Frankly, I'm surprised the Patriots got anything for him.

Yep. I said the same exact thing in another post. He was like a new car at a dealership. The dealer paid good money for the car but the sales guys couldn't move it. an When the new models came in they wholesaled him out as he was taking up space on the lot.

Yes, a backup deal with a chance to compete with Savage for the starting job.

Mallet knows that he has to be under contract to do that and he needs money like anyone else.

unless the back-up QB is Peyton Manning, who the hell cares who our back up is? Really...GOAT goes down and the season is over.

What if TB only goes down for 3, 4, 5 or 6 weeks? A short term injury is probably just or more likely as getting hurt for a full season.

Belichick could have gotten someone better to be the backup...he for some reason wanted to keep Mallett on the roster in the hope that he can turn him into a first/second rounder later on. It didn't work out. BB makes mistakes, this was one of them.

Incorrect. The only way NE was getting a early round pick here, was if TB went down and Mallet had an extended audition of sorts. As it stands he comes with too much uncertainty and contract control time. If he's even an average QB any team that gets him is a winner. What's an average cost controlled cheap QB go for these days? A high 2nd low 3rd? Not bad.

Is it really over? The team has decent running backs, good WRs and TEs, good special teams and the makings of a very, very good defense that (on paper) could be elite. Certainly TB going down will be a big blow but it's not like they suddenly become 1-15. The AFC East is a joke. The AFC Central and South divisions are also mediocre. Only Denver is solid and with Decker gone and WW's situation in serious doubt, they are not a shoo-in either for the SB.

If he doesn't stick in HOU someone else will look at him. Mallett received outstanding coaching in NE and that will help him as it did Hoyer and Cassell.

Wouldn't it make sense to do a cheap deal now?

what you said...

And impact the salary cap... why give him a longer contract he has not even played a down in practice or in a game for the Texans??... He was 1 for 4 with an interception in his NFL career, do you want to reward that body of work??

This is so good. Without reading this thread yet, this move basically sticks it to 90% of the patsfans board.

It sticks it to the "Mallett sucks. No one would trade for him. Pats fans that think someone would give anything for him are idiots" crowd.

But it also sticks it to the "The pats should definitely be able to get a 2nd round... 3rd rounder at least for Mallett. He will be a star" crowd.

Anyway, all i take out of this is that the Pats believe they have something in Jimmy G and got what they could for Mallett as they would probably have cut the guy.

This team is never boring.
I don't see how this sticks it to the majority of the board who thought Mallet was not very good and would not bring any significant value in a trade. One team offering a conditional 6th or 7th, prior to Pats cutting him, doesn't discredit that opinion, rather it validates it.

I think it is important to consider the Patriots used a third round pick on Mallett, received 3+ years of service from him, and were still able to get a sixth round draft pick for him. I would make that pick again personally.

I never bought into the ups or downs about Mallett out here.
Probably a good fit for Mallett; might represent his best chance. Good luck to him. He came across as a hard worker and a good teammate.

Say what? BB decided that The Hammah was adequate as a backup. Teams like Buffalo are pissing away several million in cap $ for expensive vet BACKUPS (Orton). Using cap efficient QBs as backup allowed the Pats to sign guys as FAs or renew their players.

The "turn him onto a 1st/2nd rounder" was fanboy fantasy, not BB's objective.

Can't argue with you there, particularly when mediocre backups cost ~$4mm a year.

I hated Mallett's play at Arkansas and in NE, so I might quibble with his specific selection, but NE certainly got something out of him, even more than your average 3rd rounder.

The Patriots got as much for Mallett as the Jaguars got for Blaine Gabbert and they did not use the #10 pick in the 2011 draft on Mallett.

I am going to follow Texans football this season; I think Mallett might have some success down there with those 2 big outside receivers.

FWIW - Learned from ESPN this weekend that 47% of all 7 round draft picks from 1994-2014 made Week 1 roster. Pats have 41% success rate in that area (11 made, 3 IR, 14 waived)

ESPN did not report on 6th round picks. Out of 22 6th round picks 8 made the team, 9 were waived, 4 went on IR, 1 on PUP. So 36% made the team.

Agreed. This looks like a good fit. Too many guys don't get their shot; Mallett didn't fit with Belichick's plans, but maybe this could be his.

Agree. I saw a few posts claiming Belichick was helping O'Brien out but I don't believe he would ever deliberately help an opposing coach out regardless of friendship, on the other hand i do think that if all offers were equal that he may have sent Mallett to Houston over Dallas because it offered Mallett a better opportunity for success than Dallas would have. BOB knows Mallett and Mallett knows his system and he wouldn't have to deal with the mess that is the Cowboys.
