In 3-4, your OLB - chandler and Ninko. No?

This has been me combing the waiver wire for ILBs.

I hope BB is doing the same.
They already have 3 and in Fleming potentially 4 IBLs on the roster now. Not happening.

The Patriots do need another LB.

Moore can not play OLB and in a 3-4 so we would only have 7 total LBs.

In a 4-3 we only have 4 true LBs cause Jones and Nink will be DEs and Buchanam does not have the range or coverage ability to assume the duties we would ask of a 4-3 OLB.

Not to mention we currently only have 14 front 7 players. You almost always carry 15 or more.

However that 15th guy will mostly just be a special teamer/emergency guy anyway but you still need him.

Quarles had a great camp. It included two penalties in games, but they were being agressive penalties. They said he would even run full speed off the field. Strong, big time motor, and long arms. Gaston was playing with the starters in 'Zona. Arians talked about how he made offensive linemen go backwards with regularity. Another strong man. Giants and Arizona respectively, tried to sneak them through waivers, and the Patriots were paying attention. That is the risk teams take. Our D-Line is fine now. Can one of them long snap. LOL

I think I may have mocked Quarles to the Patriots as a mid round selection. I like this pick. Hopefully the kid sticks.

It's an interesting philosophical change that the Patriots appear to be looking at penetrating DTs opposed to space eaters.

5-2-4 formation incoming perhaps? :p

That's kinda what it's been this preseason personnel-wise, except the 2 DEs are standing up. Ninkovich can do it all at LB but Jones can't really be relied on to cover, so the 3-4 OLBs we're seeing are more like DEs just standing up.

It's a passing league, now more than ever.
Mr Manning, let me introduce myself!
Is that your neck bolt lying on the field?

If they play 5-2-4, I take credit :p they even did something I'd suggested along with it against the Giants....Dennard lining up at safety.

Mayoclinic tends to keep track of the thread where it was first mooted.

Something just occurred to me. 'Zona signed Tommy Kelly, when I bet the Pats may have wanted to bring back. The Pats signed Gaston, who 'Zona wanted on their practice squad. Gaston had a great camp and scrimmages. He also had a fine final game against the Chargers. Nice move BB.

I'm starting to get excited about this defense, should we expect them to have some growing pains or be a dominant unit right from the jump?

Bingo. Teams are gonna air it out with all the potential flags this year. BB making his adjustments:
Lots of targets for TB
No big investment in the Running game
Jettison of a run blocking Guard
and on the other side of the ball the assumption other teams are going to do the same so stocking up on pass rushers. Maybe its time for a NASCAR lineup.

Still young. Growing pains and lapses are expected. Especially if Butler or Ryan start at CB and kids start along the line.

Come November...look out.

Smart getting young players with upside strength, and speed. Let's hope they are quick studies also.

Saw Gaston at Purdue a few times while checking Kuwann Short out. Always thought they were pretty similar players. Worth a crack

The Pats had no way to know they would get either. They are quite a ways down in the claiming order after all. I doubt both stick.

As I understand it, you can submit waiver claims with priorities/contingencies. E.g. "We claim Gaston, UNLESS we got Quarles." They got both by choice. My guess is that it's an audition situation with only one of the two sticking; we'll find out soon enough.

all kinds of sub packages and looks...you'll drive yourself nutso bananas trying to pin down this defense on any one look...and really, what's the big friggin' deal anyway?

Watching the DT shuffle and still wondering why the hell they cut Tommy Kelly. I liked Quarles as a 3-4 round draft pick, so I'm glad they got him. Don't know Gaston at all.
