Report: Ryan Mallett Traded to Houston for late pick

What's actually notable is that Week 1 of the 2014 NFL season will see 4 starting QB's on Sunday that began their careers in Foxboro and none were drafted higher than the 3rd round.

That's assuming Mallett will start.

If I'm the Texans, Mallett's a backup until Fitzpatrick falls apart.

The only way I have a problem with this deal is if the pats actually turned down offers of a 1st or 2nd round pick earlier.

From PFT/NBC sports--"Bottom line, teams just weren’t interested in giving up anything of real value to acquire Mallett"

I think if anyone actually believes some made up report that they were "turning down offers left and right," they should re-think their stance based on common sense. It's been more than obvious that Mallett wasn't going to bring nearly what some had hoped in trade value a long, long time ago.

Personally, I still think there were reasons to keep him this year, but I think Jimmy G showed enough to make them feel comfortable in moving him.

do we know whats coming back yet? i cant read thru this entire thread.

Yeah, I agree with that. Never made sense that someone would give up real value for the Mallet, that seemed like kind of a pipe dream

Honestly, as Patsfans we all should be humiliated.

It's clear Belichick can't draft like all the other fans say. After all - out of 32 teams Belichick currently has only drafted 3 starting QBs - with Mallett potentially becoming the 4th (and perhaps one day Garoppolo becoming the 5th)

I'm sure there must be a long list of other coaches and GMs with a better record out there given the reaction of most non-Patriot fans.

I can't bear the shame that he used a 3rd round pick and only got 3 years of a potential starting caliber backup QB. How can we live this down as fans???

Though I will give Belichick credit for trading rather than cutting him and risking Mallett winding up within the division. At least we can take that solace ;)

I would agree with you primetime. As many weaknesses as Fitzpatrick may have in throwing INTS etc, he's still got to be much better than Ryan Mallett. He has experience, knowledge of the HOU system, and better mechanics than Ryan Mallett--at least at this point in time, anyway.

As we know that can change, but I wouldn't be expecting Mallett to instantly go to HOU and immediately start, if that's what anyone's suggesting.

This is so good. Without reading this thread yet, this move basically sticks it to 90% of the patsfans board.

It sticks it to the "Mallett sucks. No one would trade for him. Pats fans that think someone would give anything for him are idiots" crowd.

But it also sticks it to the "The pats should definitely be able to get a 2nd round... 3rd rounder at least for Mallett. He will be a star" crowd.

Anyway, all i take out of this is that the Pats believe they have something in Jimmy G and got what they could for Mallett as they would probably have cut the guy.

This team is never boring.

So you seem be be indicating that 10% of this board figured RM was worth what he ended up bringing back in trade.

We can both hold our heads high that we were firmly in this 10% then, at least as it pertains to trade value :)

Personally, I thought we'd have kept him and stayed with 3 QBs this year, but it's pretty apparent that Mallett's play was so poor that a year one rookie can push him off the roster with probably 1/10th of the playbook knowledge.

Now that we hit on Mallett, we can expect to get our next 10 predictions wrong ;)

I like it. Mallett was not the guy, never gonna be the guy, and just taking up space. I wish him the best. Now this frees up Jimmy to be the sole backup the next couple of years and BB can take a good look to see if he thinks Jimmy can be the future or not. If he can, great. If he can't, then move on and acquire another QB going forward.

I don't feel we were offered more and turned it down no.
I just feel a possible starting QB had to be worth more than a 6th if he starts and gets a second contract then the Texans got a steal.
I guess I just thought a player or at least a third.

You're looking at this wrong. it's not what he was worth. It's what people were willing to pay.

He could be a HOF and be worth 2 1st's. However if noe one will pay that and we dont' want him cause of Jimmy G. The question is then what can the pats get for him.

Answer is a 6th obviously. You can hang out for that 3rd round pick all you want but the downside to that strategy is a lost roster spot and no 6th round pick.

The pats have donw well getting anything for him.

Exactly. I am not even sure what the poster was trying to do. Insult the whole board I guess??? Sure there were some people who thought RM was gonna net some 2nd or even 1st round pick. Whatever....

There were some that figured he was worth nothing or was going to be cut..which is pretty close to reality. Most just figured he could go to a team for something conditional...which he did. There is no need for 3 QB anyway. Rather have a player.

It's actually a 2016 conditional 7th rounder, with the chance to be a 6th if Mallett stays and ends up playing.

A 7th, maybe a 6th and no bag of chips, bummer. :(

they should at least throw a truck of doritos among this pick, the doritos at least is going to be useful

Because 6th round picks never turn into anything?
