Report: Ryan Mallett Traded to Houston for late pick

That is all you are going to get. More importantly it allows a roster spot for someone who might actually....see the field.

Also with only 2 QBs assuming they stay at 2 I would think it gives JG more snaps, more work, more attention and ultimately allows him to develop quicker.
A conditional 2016 7th still sucks ass, but, alas, we've cut higher draft picks with no compensation.......but it still sucks ass.:(

So we can say now it's a lose - lose trade. They have lost benefit of full training camp for RM and we have lost a better compensation.

Where was the better compensation we lost?
Who would have offered more?
Team GMs I mean, not fan boys.

Where is the 2016 draft going to be held? I want to get my day three pass now so I can be in position to witness the round 7 fireworks.....conditionally speaking of course.

Would have been great if Mallett had been a World Beater HOF QB.

Instead we spent a 3rd rounder on a backup QB for 2 years that we were paying on a rookie contract average $500k-600k per year.

Other options would have been to re-sign Hoyer, who cost the Browns 2 years $2mm. Or take a shot on someone (Tebow?) from outside the system.

My rough math says by drafting Mallett, we saved about $400k each year in salary for two years on the QB2 roster spot, over a veteran journeyman coming from the outside.

Add in the fact that because Mallett was good enough to have the confidence of the staff, we didn't carry a QB3 on the roster at all for those two years. Which is worth at least another half a million in cap space, and a roster spot.

So the return on that 3rd rounder is (1) roughly $1MM in salary saved against the next best alternative (2) a reclaimed roster spot for two years, plus (3) terminating value of a 6th round pick.

Easy to wish it had been more, but that pick worked pretty hard for us.

Compare it with the return we got for drafting Brandon Tate or Taylor Price, both in the 3rd. Or if we'd picked a QB later in the draft that completely washed out.

Good rationalization of the entire scenario. Only hole in your argument is that the team spent a 3rd and received a 6th and maybe a 7th. That is a net-loss.

However, they took a shot and to your point saved money. He wasn't a KOC or epic fail du jour. The staff had enough confidence in him to backup TB and he did it.

The good news is that he go beat out by a rookie. Not too bad.

After the Washington pre-season game, many of those outraged by a 6th round pick, would have settled for a bucket of spit.

Don't forget TFB and sevral other great players were taken in the 6th round

I suspect those who are mystified by the "terrible" compensation for this trade are the same ones I recall expecting to get a 1st for Rohan Davey. And there were a quite a few who were that delusional then too.

Belichick was not going to waste a roster space carrying Mallett. HE WAS GOING TO BE CUT. So he holds him on the roster for a day and gets a late pick...for a QB who has never looked remotely competent on the field. As green as JAG is, when had Mallett ever looked as good as the rookie?

I thought we would of kept him for one more year but ok I'm cool with this trade.

Are people really complaining about a 6th rounder for Mallet? Really?

He sucks. He's not good. He hasn't shown anything in the 4 years he's been here. Jimmy G made him look like garbage and he's been here a couple months.

You should be happy the Pats got anything for him. I'm surprised the Texans would even give a 6th for him.

I don't understand why anyone ever expected anything from a trade, especially in the last year of a contract. It's not strange that they only got a 7th for originally a 3rd.

Most 3rd round pick don't ever bring trade value. Getting anything is rare. There's a slew of mid-round QBs floating around the league with virtually no value, why would the Pats backup be special?

A starting QB for a 6th disgusting.
BB really helping out his friend.

On what planet is Mallet a starter in the NFL?

Please, list me all the positives about Mallet. He's got an arm...that's it.

Always thought that posters on this board overestimated the trade value of Mallett, he was here for 3 years and never really progressed to the next level...

Difficult to assess the value of Mallett as we do not know if there were other offers, either better or worse...

We now have another roster slot open...

Actually we don't because of the Quarles waiver claim. Unless there's been another move which hasn't been announced to get Quarles on the 53 man.

Ridiculous trade. Why even bother ? I rather keep him for a year as insurance and get nothing next year. Dumb, worthless trade. So we basically traded Mallett for Aiken (or whatever long snapper, Mallett was basically traded to open up a roster spot) and a 6th round pick.

Completely disagree. A worthless trade? So you'd rather keep 3 QB's on the roster and get nothing in return for Mallet when he leaves in FA next year?

JG is better than Mallet. He should be the Pats #2. If Brady goes down does it really matter if the Pats are starting Mallet or JG?

The truth is that the Texans managed this whole situation from the beginning, they ended up getting him for peanuts.

Oh there are offers from bills and cowboys, fine, go trade with them. They threw the least valuable compensation just to. guarantee the asset, low risk, high reward.

Thrilled we got something for Mallet and glad we're not using 3 roster spots on QB.

The only thing I expected in a trade with Mallet is some coupons for McDonald's. Mallet didn't tun out to be what we hoped. Time to move on.

So it seems the consensus is that Mallett looked like garbage and the Patriots should have cut him rather than wasting the roster spot, and that Houston totally fleeced BB by only giving up a 6th rounder for him.

The consensus makes my head hurt.

Now PC, cmon?

BB did not come out smelling like rose on this deal compared to others.

The Texans got him for peanuts because he is worth peanuts....if that. He has shown NO signs of being good. He would have been cut if nobody offered a pick.

So we can say now it's a lose - lose trade. They have lost benefit of full training camp for RM and we have lost a better compensation.

We don't know if better compensation was ever offered. We do know he would have been our backup QB if Jimmy G had been an epic fail so RM did his job right up to the end. That has some value. RM turned out to not be the next Tom Brady. Neither did Rohan Davey, Kliff Kingsbury, Matt Cassell, Kevin O'Connor, or Brian Hoyer.

Good rationalization of the entire scenario. Only hole in your argument is that the team spent a 3rd and received a 6th and maybe a 7th. That is a net-loss.

The team spent a 3rd and got a viable backup for three seasons plus a pre-season, plus a conditional 7th. Considering how many 3rd rounders aren't even in the league after 2 seasons and the small chance the conditional becomes a keeper, it's definitely not a net loss.

The good news is that he go beat out by a rookie. Not too bad.

The good news is we aren't the Texans who have just watched Ryan FItzpatrick suck all pre-season and are now giving the Pats a pick for someone who was about to be waived and should have cost them nothing and who also sucked in our pre-season and are now hoping he won't suck as bad as Fitzpatrick during the regular season. That's a lot of suckage to deal with!
