We got rid of mallett and got a great player in Quarles who is also the nephew of Ben Coates

Asa Watson is Ben Watson's brother.

That and 8 bucks get you a stadium beer.

Is it a conditional 6th or do we get the 6th no matter what happens?

On a scale of 1 to 100, the value of return is a 1. The Pats could not have received a lower return. What were the other team's offering....UPS fare to ship out Mallett's gear after his release?

That is what I was thinking. If Dallas & Bills were interested, did they offer a straight-up 7th rounder in 2016? Guess we'll never know. Wonder if it was better to let him be a free-agent and see what our compensary pick wouldve been.

With this trade we've positioned ourselves perfectly to draft the next Jon Halapio.

If it ends up being pick 199, we robbed the Texans.

Officially a bust of a third round pick. At least they got more for this 3rd rounder than Kevin O'Connell.

Realistically, what could they have gotten as a comp pick, if they held onto him and let him walk in FA?

Probably a 2016 6, if they didn't sign a FA that cancelled it out.

Jerry "Glory Hole" Jones?

To be fair, "glory hole" is a term of art in the oil business (which is where Jones made much of his fortune).

In any case, though, Jerruh isn't normally drunk that early in the day. ;)

Would have liked to watch Mallett get an official start with the first teamers just once. Al Davis would have loved the big guy heaving bombs to his guys back in the day. Hope he gets at least one start in his career. I'll root for him

No. Players who get cut are not part of the formula.

More precisely: a player who reaches FA as a result of being released by his prior team doesn't count as a free agent lost by the team that releases him, or a free agent gained by the team that signs him.

Not picking up an option, though, apparently does not count as releasing a player (see: Stallworth, Donté).

The Patriots being able to obtain a 6th-rounder for basically a third string QB on the final year of his contract is a fantastic trade.

People are saying there was some mutual grab-ass between HOU and NEP on this one and that's true. BB got to keep Mallett around to keep the heat on Jimmy Football and only got rid of Mallett when he had gained enough confidence to do so. He also made sure the Texans weren't able to get Mallett in place early enough to fit him into their system so they almost certainly will have to play Fitzpatrick a few games which are guaranteed losses, IMHO.

I know Mallett is some people's binky, but get over it. He ain't the next Tom Brady. He'll be lucky to be the next Matt Cassel. Chances are that he's the next Kevin O'Connell.

Was it a 6th? wish is was a 4th..oh well

WOW, he went from the 6th overall pick in 2013, to a 6th round pick. Oh have the mighty fallen.

OMG, this actually happened?

No kidding.

From the PatsFans Draft Talk Board, Mallett was worth at least a 2014 2nd Round Pick.

O'Connell is said to be a highly respected coach.

But .... but .... but .... Ryan Mallett was suppose to be traded to the Cleveland Browns for a first round pick in 2013.
Man a lot of people co-signed that thread. I found it hard to believe that so many though mallet was worth the sixth overall pick with close to (0) on the field performance to go on. How many hundreds of posts did it generate?

Any criticism of Belichick should not come from anything that happened today. The criticism should be the decision to spend a 3rd round pick on the guy they did.

Please don't get me wrong. I am not saying Belichick is a bad drafter. Like every single GM in the league, he has plenty of hits and misses. Mallett was one of the misses.

Would have been great if Mallett had been a World Beater HOF QB.

Instead we spent a 3rd rounder on a backup QB for 2 years that we were paying on a rookie contract average $500k-600k per year.

Other options would have been to re-sign Hoyer, who cost the Browns 2 years $2mm. Or take a shot on someone (Tebow?) from outside the system.

My rough math says by drafting Mallett, we saved about $400k each year in salary for two years on the QB2 roster spot, over a veteran journeyman coming from the outside.

Add in the fact that because Mallett was good enough to have the confidence of the staff, we didn't carry a QB3 on the roster at all for those two years. Which is worth at least another half a million in cap space, and a roster spot.

So the return on that 3rd rounder is (1) roughly $1MM in salary saved against the next best alternative (2) a reclaimed roster spot for two years, plus (3) terminating value of a 6th round pick.

Easy to wish it had been more, but that pick worked pretty hard for us.

Compare it with the return we got for drafting Brandon Tate or Taylor Price, both in the 3rd. Or if we'd picked a QB later in the draft that completely washed out.

Thanks for the clarification on Revis everyone....

I'll now go sit in the corner with my dunce cap on :(
Oh, it ain't like that. Just keeping a fellow poster informed. That's another reason everyone was so giddy about his signing. We got him AND we didn't have to sacrifice the comp pick. Brilliant move by BB.
