He might be a keeper. The Giants might be devoid of talent, but their d-line is deep and he was probably just a victim of a numbers game there. The Giants probably hoped to sneak him onto their practice squad.

I like it. He was graded as a third round talent predraft. Ended up going undrafted due to off field issues.

All reports on him from Giants camp were positive. Seems worth taking a look at in the Danny Aiken Memorial Revolving 53rd Chair.

Nice. Quarles was a mid-round binky of mine.

Two very different scouting reports on Quarles:

From Drew Boylhart:

Kelcy Quarles DT South Carolina - Talent Board: Round 1

STRENGTHS
Kelcy is a big, strong, powerful, quick defensive tackle. He has the athleticism to play in multiple fronts and in any style of defense. He has the foot quickness off the line and strength to be a Defensive End in a 3-4 defense and also has the strength and quickness to be used as a pure nose tackle. He can play as a defensive tackle in a 4-3 defense and has the talent to play in a 1-gap or 2-gap defense. Kelcy comes off the line of scrimmage with excellent pad level and has the natural strength to control his opponent, shed and make the tackle in the hole. He has the surprising ability to get into the backfield and has just enough change of direction agility to not only flush a quarterback, but finish it and make the sack. Kelcy uses his hands very well when he plays inside and is used as a 2-gap lineman with the responsibility to stop the run. Kelcy handles the double team very well against the run or pass. He has excellent overall talent to be an impact defensive lineman at the next level for the team that selects him.

CONCERNS
Kelcy has to learn to play with more consistency. When used as a pass rusher, he struggles to keep his balance and loses gap control because he gets up too high, too quickly. When he gets up too high, he loses balance, lacks a secondary move and takes himself out of the play. All of these issues are technique issues and I believe he will learn and improve quickly because his effort on every play is outstanding.

BOTTOM LINE
Kelcy will be an excellent defensive lineman as long as he gets it through his head that he is not a speed rusher who will make a lot of sacks. He will be an excellent run stuffing lineman with the ability to learn to power rush and make his sacks that way. Kelcy has Vince Wilfolk-like talent. That being said, he will have to become more consistent, gain some muscle/bulk and learn what is expected of him. Nevertheless the talent is there, the work ethic is obvious, and rudiments of an impact defensive lineman are just sitting there waiting for better direction. That’s what Kelcy needs right now -- a team that will tell him to do one thing to the best of his ability on every play and let other players do the rest. Once he accomplishes doing that one thing (stopping the run) to the best of his ability, he can move on and develop the other talents that he obviously has. Kelcy took on the double teams all year of the offensive lineman and still made an impact. He was not double teamed by tight ends or running backs that will never sniff the NFL. He was double teamed by big bodied players and still was disruptive. He made impact plays stopping the run or shooting the gap. He never gave up on a play and tackled players from behind sometimes ten and twenty yards down the field on the opposite side from where he was lined up. Kelcy was not afraid to get injured and never played like he was worried about getting injured. Kelcy never had to make any excuses for his play on the field because of his effort on every play. He did his job taking on double teams at the line of scrimmage and his natural strength and pad level coming off the line of scrimmage made offensive coordinators have to account for him on every play.

Kelcey Quarles | The Huddle Report

From OTG:

Power. Impressive. Strong Core Power and Torso Power as well. His Anchor against the Run isn't especially Stout, but his Bull Rush in the Pass Rush is imposing. Won't get many Sacks, but could potentially cause some Disruption.

Agility. Mediocre. Adequate Launch Velocity. Awful Fluidity, though. Decent Acceleration and Range.

Combat Skills. Superior. Impressive Paw Power. Inconsistent and raw Mechanics, but flashes good form.

Intangibles. Mediocre. Inconsistent Motor.
Kelcy Quarles Prospectus
Frankly, I believe that Kelcy Quarles's Stock has gotten dramatically inflated by the Production that he enjoyed this past Year as a direct result of all the attention being paid to Jadeveon Clowney, not to mention his other TeamMates.

Hell, I could've picked up 10 Sacks playing opposite Hurricane Jadeveon.

I could definitely be wrong, and it wouldn't be the first time, but in terms of Potential Impact at The Next Level, I believe that Kelcey Quarles's Strengths are a combination of Power and prospectively potent Combat Skills that, if successfully developed, could enable him to Push the Pocket from time to time...but not much more than that.

I fear that his Agility is too limited for'm to be a strong candidate to become a genuine Pass Rushing Threat.

His Skill Set, it seems to me, is actually a far better match for a Grizzly...but he's got the Frame of a Wolf!!

Huge Thanks for the invaluable Work done by the Beasts at Draft BreakDown and NoonKick!!

Kelcy Quarles - Fanatical Yankee

In some ways, not that dissimilar, as both project Quarles more as a grizzly than as a pass rusher. Seems not too dissimilar from Jerel Worthy to me, at first glance.

3 rookies on the DL.

This must mean no interest in Worthy even for the PS

FWIW, Giants fans seem uniformly fed up that the team kept Markus Kuhn over Quarles, who they thought showed more promise.

Good claim. Chris Jones to short term IR on Wednesday?

Jeff Howe @jeffphowe
Quarles (undrafted) apparently outperformed 2013 2nd-rounder Hankins, 2014 3rd-rounder Bromley, but NYG stuck with higher investments.

Hyperbole comment but it would so great that the team known to just churn out good to great DLineman let a good one go to the Pats while the ones they kept were busts.

Not clear. The team may have just been hedging their bets, unsure whether Worthy would make it through to the PS. I do see Quarles and Worthy as somewhat similar, and wouldn't mind having both and letting them fight it out.

Worthy showed enough to get a longer look; I hope he's on the PS. Quarles should be an interesting player on the 53 especially if Jones goes to short term IR.

Per Mike Loyko on twitter, Kelcy Quarles' uncle is none other than Ben Coates, FWIW.

I've seen the worthy to PS mentioned often...have we confirmed he has eligibility? Didn't he play for GB in games that would render him ineligible?

IIRC, the new PS rules allow for up to 2 players with 2 years experience, regardless of games played.

Another scouting report on Quarles, FWIW:

Quarles plays defensive tackle in South Carolina’s four-man front. He will line up on the nose and also at as a one, two, or three-technique. The way the South Carolina defense is set up, the defensive linemen play in a rotation to stay fresh. What jumps out at me about Quarles is his sack production. Quarles is an inside guy, yet led South Carolina in sacks. Jadeveon Clowney is said to be the top D-Linemen in the country, yet he finished the season with only three sacks, Quarles had 9.5. That is a huge number for an inside player.

Quarles has good size at about 6040 – 300. He is thick and well-built for a D- Linemen and has the frame to carry 310 – 315 when in the NFL. He has good straight-line quickness and speed. I think he will time in the 4.95 – 5.05 range at the Combine. A concern I have is, he is a bit tight in his knees and can have a tendency to play straight-legged. Because of this, his lateral movement isn’t as good as it could be. At times, he will have trouble clearing piles when moving laterally. That being said, he is still a force at the line of scrimmage. He has good snap reaction and initial quickness. With his long arms, he can control blockers and he shows he can shed quickly. One person close to Quarles referred to him as being “country strong”, and that is a great description. Though he can get tall he does an excellent job holding the point. You almost never see him give ground to blockers and does a very good job versus double team blocks.

Quarles plays hard and competes. He has good awareness and can find the ball. He can be a force versus the run and his 13.5 tackles for loss attest to that. While he isn’t a great athlete, he makes a lot of plays including some “wow” plays. I like that he makes pursuit plays. He has some range and goes all out chasing the ball.

As a pass rusher, he is a bull rusher first but he can also put together some counter moves. He has a good burst coming off blocks to the QB.

Quarles can play a variety of positions at the next level. I see him mainly as an inside player in either a 3-4 or a 4-3. While he doesn’t have great nose tackle size, his strength and power more than make up for it. With his long arms and two-gap ability he could also play as a five-technique. I can see him being drafted in the later part of the first round or early in the second. He can start for many clubs as a rookie.
