Would Cleveland want Boyce since they've lost Gordon for the year?

He's a guy that reportedly was going to get cut in Tampa, so they weren't buying into his numbers from last year, but slot him where you want. It still puts Boyce at what's basically the WR8 spot.

I'd be interested in a citation for that. All I've seen was Lovie Smith lighting a fire under him a couple of weeks ago and then backing off the statement. Who has indicated he was going to be cut? I'd find it kind of surprising if a team cut a guy who as a rookie converting to TE had pretty much the best season of any rookie TE in the league last year.

Paul Perillo reported it today, on the radio.

the people bashing the guy who was a beast in college can shut up.
The list of college beasts who came to the nfl and did nothing but waste cap space is very very very long. **All** indications are pointing to him being just another name on that list.

What does a Patriots beat writer know about the inner workings of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Hell, the local beat guys can't get it right about the Patriots.

BTW, if Perillo reported that the Bucs loved Wright, you would be first to point that out.

Also, how does it make sense that Wright had one of the best seasons for a rookie TE ever (at least statistically) and he was the Bucs' second best receiver last year and he gets cut the next year. If Lovie was going to cut him, that speaks more to the quality of a head coach than the quality of Wright.

Perillo is a joke. He's admitted that he doesn't understand some of the basics of football, and as far as I know, he's never broken a story. If Perillo is the only one reporting something, it is probably a misunderstanding.

I don't hate Perillo like you do, but my guess is that he is just parrotting the rumors that have been circling since the trade happened. It just makes no sense for them to cut a second year player playing on an UDFA contract who had the kind of production he had last year.

Again, funny if the Pats had signed Wright as an UDFA, he had the rookie season here that he had in Tampa as a TE, and Belichick cut him next week; Deus would be the first one to blast Belichick for his stupidity.

I don't "hate" Perillo. He's just puts no effort into his job, and his reporting carries no weight with me. There are many fans that put much more time into learning about and understanding football than he does. It is a joke that he, and many other media members, hold such sought after jobs and put so littler effort into them.

Given the number of hard core, knowledgeable, well-spoken fans in this area, it defies reason that the local media outlets employ such slackers.

Sorry, I didn't mean to put words in your mouth.

I think being a Patriot employee may affect his writing. I think he is not allowed to break stories. And there are probably things he cannot write about.

I do have to say I enjoy him on 98.5. I do listen to PFW in Progress, but I don't like the structure there where it is Andy being Mr. Negative, Paul strattling the center a bit more where he can either go negative or positive (although he is mostly negative) and Fred as the Super Homer.

I don't mind his "personality". It would be nice if he, you know, learned about football, at least at a fundamental level. He should know the difference between an X and a Z receiver.

I don't think reported is a correct word. To report it he would have to get it from a source in Tampa which we can be pretty certain he doesn't have one of.
I think speculated, guessed or pulled out of his @ss would be more correct unless "report" helps make the trade look worse for those with that goal.

It seems pretty clear that Wright outperformed any reasonable expectations during his rookie year. Now, you've got a new coaching staff asking the player to function in a different role that the one he had some success in. If it's true that the Patriots have been trying to acquire him for a while (and I have no way of knowing that to be so), that indicates they have pretty good idea of where he'll fit into the offense. Best case - more versatility and another weapon for very short money.

I agree, and I'd also add that this is basically the best time to acquire a player. If a guy performs well in a role, your team can utilize him in that role, but his own team has changed coaches and no longer has use for a guy with his skills, then that's the ideal scenario for being able to buy low on a guy who has premium value to you. We'll see how this goes and if he's actually any good, but in general these are the types of trades where you tend to be able to get some value.

I've had Wright on my keeper team since like October and have very little at TE, so I've read all the updates you can imagine on him this offseason. And there have in fact been very conflicting reports. IIRC, when Lovie first got the job, he said that Wright looked awesome and would have a huge role. Then they drafted ASJ and reports of TW's struggles started to leak out. Without any injuries, TW was probably going to be limited to about 10 snaps per game on TB this year, stupidly. He was 3rd on the depth chart this preseason.

Pats need to have Lois Lerner "lose" last night's game tape for Cleveland or anyone to want Boyce on their 53

Yeah, because everyone who was a beast in college naturally becomes a beast in the NFL, right? Right? None of them are ever a bust, especially high draft picks. It's just not possible.

Boyce is awful. Let's wrap this thread up and move on. Two camps and 1 full season in the system and he looks like he doesn't know a single route. Either he just doesn't care or he's school smart and football dumb. Also, he didn't look one bit fast. Their CBs were constantly racing ahead of him on all his very predictable routes. When we drafted him I thought he could be Deion Branch with some upper body strength but his time is done in the NFL.

I have to agree. Time to move on , pick the best players and on to Miami.
