To be totally honest, if Brady went down I would feel more confident seeing Jimmy G come in than Mallett.

And that's what this whole thing may end up coming down to....the fact that Ryan Mallett is so ineffective that he makes a raw rookie with limited knowledge of the playbook look fantastic. I don't know how much Belichick will factor in his knowledge of the scheme and ability to change things up, etc, which would be my biggest concern.

I suppose Belichick has to weigh shoddier play vs better knowledge of the system.

This is a toss up to try and figure out, and thankfully we'll find out in 40 hrs or so.

Just rewatching that Garpo Dobson TD. That was a god awful ugly throw by Garpo, and a pretty great catch by Dobson. Dobson really tracked that duck.

Yeah, definitely thrown behind him. The CB falling down didn't hurt either.

It's good to see Dobson back. I think he's going to make a nice year two leap.

Revis made a monstars reference. Sign him NOW

I think the throw was okay. Not perfect. It could have been half a yard more down field and on the outside as opposed to the inside shoulder. However for a ball 40 yards down the field it was pretty accurate. Even if the CB stays upright Dobson had a better chance at it and still probably makes the catch.

I know you are probably just going overboard to make a point but still I think you can't bash that pass too much.

I think we might keep Mallett around just one more year so Garoppolo has a full year of practice before he has a chance of going into a game. Don't get me wrong Garoppolo is good but he needs more practice before I would trust him as a backup.

If Brady goes down and we are through. Another backup lineman etc... may do more good with the spot for this year. Mallet won't be here next year anyway.

And what if Brady sprains his ankle and misses 4 games. Would you still expect the season to be done? I wouldn't, and I doubt Belichick would either. Even 6-8 games isn't the kiss of death.

Whether Mallett is here next year (he obviously won't be) is irrelevant to the discussion of him being our 2014 backup or not.

When has Brady ever missed a game because of a non season ending injury?

way to call down ten million jinxes, guys...jeezus krist

When did Belichick take a QB in the second round before this year?

Just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean it can't.

Thankfully, we have a coach who attempts to have some depth at positions--whether we need them or not.

Aside from that, I'm fully with @Joker in the sense that we shouldn't even be discussing it any further ;)

It's completely hilarious that some of the same posters who were banging the drum for the old "Mallett to HOU for a 2nd round pick" prospect are now the exact same people who no longer believe that we even need to keep him due to lack of talent.

And all of this happened within a 3 week period...

There was no way BB was going to let this game go into OT. He was like we go for it on 4th down and miss then they kick a filed goal and we go him. He is definitely glad to be down with this preseason stuff

Boyce was freaking awful tonight. He is definitely going to be cut.

I think that's been getting clearer and clearer in the past couple of games.

I'd still like to see him make it through to the PS though, in an attempt at a developmental role for the future.

Something about chasing bad money with bad money comes to mind.

He has looked lackadaisical and utterly lost at times this preseason. Forget the speed on KR, that play is all but dead thanks Herrdell.

Is that really any different from any other legitimate playoff contender losing their best/most important player? Maybe the season would be over, maybe not. Starting QB Trent Green went out in preseason, and the Rams had a pretty good 1999 season despite the dire outlook at the time; a complete difference from what happened to the Colts in 2011.

Perhaps, but on the other hand, for every end of the roster guy who eventually becomes a starter (Dan Connolly, Stephen Neal), there are ten guys like Eric Moore or A.J. Edds who are, for good reason, completely forgotten very quickly.

You're throwing the towel in on the Josh Boyce project? That is understandable, although I'd probably give him another year first on the PS (if he could make it) myself.

Only seen the highlights on NFL.com.

Thought the TD to AD was a good NFL throw, not perfect but it didn't have to be - only one guy was coming down with that ball and it wasn't the defender.

Not sure on the INT. The route that Boyce did run was a good one, he left the defender standing and was open on the sideline - but was it the right route? Or did Jimmy make a mental error? He released the ball before the route was complete as if he was expecting Boyce to make an incut which would turn into a sit down or a nice gain on the slant.

Either way it's a good coaching point for one of the youngsters, although one of them may not be around much longer.

I doubt he would make the PS.
