1.) Mankins' trade was not needed to create room for a McCourty extension. A McCourty extension would most likely lower his 2014 cap number. A Revis extension is a different matter:)

2.) As of now I have the Patriots cash spending for a 53 roster, 3 IR players, 10 man practice squad in the 92 to 93 million range. Cap is $133 million.

3.) Tyler Ott had 4K of his salary guaranteed. Was not reported at time of signing. Figured it out when he was waived.

4.) Pats recently received a $79,200 credit for a resolved grievance with Michael Jenkins. Thanks to Ben Volin for pointing that out.

5.) At a loss to explain why my cap space number $13,148,604 differs so much from the NFLPA's - League Cap Report, Updated: 8/28/2014 9:21:13 AM - NFLPlayers.com - of $12,700,604.

The NFLPA just updated their numbers. Only differ from theirs by $55,800.

$13m in cap space surely means they're making a move or 2, whether trade or extensions.

what is the rule on carrying cap space to the next year? They can't carry all of can they? If that's the case then teams like Cleveland can load up next year and have a cap around $200M.
Maybe they guarantee some salaries this year or convert it to bonus money.

Teams can rollover 100% of what cap space is left.

If thats the case then maybe we see a whopping amount of extensions next year. Solder, Revis, Jones McCourty etc.?

Cleveland rolled over $24m from last year to this year.

I believe we can save money (initially) on a McCourtey extension but the point is that we have a lot of really good, young players and it's more important to get them done - even if they're not signed until next year - than to hold onto Mankins for one more year as much as I liked Mankins.

I really hope so. Jones has been really impressive so far and looks to improve every year too. An extension of him and McCourty would make me really happy for the future of our defense. If we don't extend them then I would be less than pleased though. They will probably both be really expensive. But they are awesome pieces to build the defense around.

If we are spending 92-93 million in cash and the cap is 133 million why do we only have 13 mil in cap space? Thanks in advance.

Dead money, Hernandez contributing a huge amount of cash there.

When did this rollover cap space thing start? I don't recall ever hearing that before...that makes things really weird/interesting if teams start vying for championship "windows" of say 3 years...just rollover a bunch of cap for 3 years and suck, then go to max with awesome players for 3 years???

Also, Miguel...from what u posted originally, u were less than 3% off from nflpa cap numbers...neither I not anyone else on this board thinks that's "so much"

Hopefully some big extensions coming up for Dmac and revis

Well to extend Revis long term that will probably cost us no less than 6 Million in the immediate year. I can't imagine him staying here for less than 13M per year. Even that is with him taking a pay cut. So if we give him that we would still have about 7 or so million to play with to try to extend McCourty/Solder/Vereen/Jones. I know Jones is only in the 3rd year of his contract but I think he is one you want to get done early.

The rollover cap space started with the new CBA. When my numbers match to the dollar for most of this League Year "so much" is relative:)

Reminder that the 2012 draft class can NOT have their contracts adjusted until after the 2014 League Year end. Sorry, Chandler

Some questions:
Is there a cap limit that can be passed over to the next year?

Is this advantage cumulative? As if in year X a team is 20 M under the cap, then in year X+1,supposing it kept the same amount os salaries spent, they'd have 20 M in cap space plus 20 M that was credited from year X, and so, in year X + 2 they would have 40 extra Millions in Cap Space. I don't think that's the way it works, cause that would cause a big discrepancy down the road for some teams, but i do not know.

Thanks in advance

Prorated signing bonuses and close to 16 million in "dead money".
