Logan Mankins Traded

Way late to the party but read this yesterday.

I think my feelings on the subject generally reflect most of the sentiments in this thread.

The trade definitely stung a bit as Mankins is one of my favorite players, overrated or not. I thought he was our toughest player and he seemed to thoroughly enjoy being in the thick of chaos.

I think, all things considered, that this is a good and fair trade for both sides. I don't think it's a genius move and an absolute steal, nor do I think Bill got the raw end either.

Like others have said, Patriots get a player in Wright who should have an impact at one of our greatest areas of need before the end of the season, a fourth round draft pick (which I think is fair given Mankins probably has 3 years left tops as a starting guard), and the freeing up of capital to (hopefully) utilize in other acquisitions or extensions before the end of the year. The large downside, of course, is we lose our best player at a position we are already thin and/or unproven at, somewhat similar to our WR situation last year.

The Bucs get a once All-Pro guard who I think still has more left in the tank than some are giving him credit for, at a position they are in desperate need. It makes sense for them to pony up the cash because it should have a more noticeable impact for the team.

As it stands, I think it appears to be beneficial for both parties. Whether it ultimately turns out to be better for either team will depend on the future performance of the players traded.

They did. Asking him to renegotiate is certainly within their rights. Trading him is also part of the contract. What part of the contract did they not honor? If they didn't honor any part of the contract then I would assume they could be sued for breach of contract, don't you? Nobody forced LM to sign the contract he finally signed, which are not guaranteed. He could have 'stuck to his guns' and waited for a guaranteed contract but I would assume he would have been punching cows for a living instead of playing in the NFL for millions and millions of dollars.

Nobody said anything about "rights". The point is that they traded Mankins because they no longer wanted to pay him what they had previously agreed to pay him. Mankins is a principled guy and wanted to get the compensation stated in his contract. Which he is.

Don't remind me of that game. That game (or the stupid fg penalty jets game) cost the Pats home field advantage in the playoffs.

I don't disagree with you, but when I think of us losing HFA I think of our end-of-game drive against Miami where our red zone offense consisted of Edelman, an injured Amendola, Collie, Hooman and a RB (can't remember).

I think that was the point where I realized what the team was going to be that year, threw away my expectations, and more or less just enjoyed the remaining ride they took us on.

This post comes off a tad bit spoiled and entitled. Most fans would kill for the team we had last year.

Ya looks like Brady is a little pissed that Mankins got traded or he really doesn't want to go spend a day and a half in East Rutheford, NJ.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect success under Brady and Belichick. They've done it (just about) every single year. It doesn't mean I don't appreciate how difficult that is.

On the contrary, I thought the Patriots had an extremely successful season last year given the injuries.

I just remember watching that drive, watching those players all play their asses off but just not being able to get any separation down there, and thinking there wasn't much more they could have done.

Maybe I am unintentionally entitled because I've never known the Pats as unsuccessful, but you've got to admit that WR corps was pretty dismal by the end of the year.

. If you think the Pats aren't going 'all-in' every year you are sadly mistaken. .

Thank you! It is amazing that people think they dont go all in every year. Every year they play chess and try to find the best pieces. Oh, also by the way they spend to the cap in every year. What else are they supposed to do?

Oh, I know get Fitzgerald and Watt, and AP..yeah, the cheap mofos.

He is unhappy based on that picture?

Maybe he has gas. Maybe his shorts are riding up his arse crack and there is no subtle way to reach in there without drawing attention to himself. That could easily cause a grimace on my face. Maybe he is holding his breath; he is in New Jersey whose state tree is a smokestack.

Of course he could be pisssed about Mankins and thinking about a future of tripping over Devey's club feet too.

Who knows.

It was a joke post. Hence the "spending a day in NJ" line

I would append that the fact that the Bucs employed Wright as a Flex End doesn't make him a Flex End, any more than Vince Wilfork is a Defensive End just because we occasionally deploy'm there.

Tim Wright, unless he's beefed up considerably from his College 6030/219, is a Split End.

I expect that we'll deploy'm in the Slot a lot, as the Bucs did, but asking'm to take on the Blocking Duties of a Flex End would be an huge Mistake, as the former Bucs Coaches could tell you!!

01 ~ Height and weight for a year and a half ago are about as useful as combine 40 times. He doesn't look small in the videos. He could easily go from 220 to 230 in a year under a pro fitness regimen.

02 ~ It's funny that everyone wanted to convert another Rutgers WR to TE but this one already has been and people complain. If Harrison had the season that Wright just had, people would be bustin a nut.

01 ~ Considering that the vast majority of "Skill Position" Players actually remain very close to their Pre-Draft weight, your assertion that "Height and weight for a year and a half ago are about as useful as combine 40 times." is ludicrous, to put it kindly. As I said: "Tim Wright, unless he's beefed up considerably from his College 6030/219, is a Split End."

02 ~ Correction: Not "everyone" wanted to switch Harrison to Flex End. I was adamantly against it.

I was mainly talking about weight, which can change most definitely. What evidence do you have that their weights don't change? Have they weighed him since then? It certainly isn't ludicrous for a 6'3 guy in his early twenties to put on 10-20 pounds. It just isn't. A 22 year old isn't physically mature yet. You don't have to be gymrat to realize that. So to put in kindly Brother Grid, I think you are wrong re: weight.

And on 2, you've been on the board long enough to know that everyone doesn't mean every single poster.

You're the TE guru and I bow to your considerable knowledge (and I mean that sincerely, not Internet sarcastically) and I'm not going to question you on Flex/Split or whatever. But either way the Pats obviously have an idea on how they would like to use him.

I have great respect for your Work and for you, Brother Scrizz, but when you're pretending that I said something I never said ~ as you are doing right now ~ I'm gonna call you on it:

01 ~ You've misstated my words dramatically: I never said that "their weights don't change." Not even close. I've now repeatedly written that I'm allowing for the possibility that he did gain significant weight, but it's evidently not sinking in. You do understand what "unless" means...right??
spock.gif

02 ~ All I did was note that your assertion that "Height and weight for a year and a half ago are about as useful as combine 40 times." is preposterous. And I mentioned them only as a point of reference in writing ~ pay close attention, now, as this is the 3rd time these words will appear before your eyes ~ "Tim Wright, unless he's beefed up considerably from his College 6030/219, is a Split End."

03 ~ Your continued insistence that I'm claiming that "their weights don't change" and that I'm saying that it's "ludicrous for a 6'3 guy in his early twenties to put on 10-20 pounds" when I've explicitly allowed for precisely that Possibility...is simply amazing.

04 ~ "Everyone" means "everyone", Bro. Words like "almost" ~ as in "almost everyone" exist for your convenience, so that you don't misstate the facts as you have. Perhaps instead of lazily misstating facts and then expecting me to imagine what you really meant, you should hold yourself accountable for Accuracy and type in that single additional word that would've rendered your words Truthful.

Well for one thing, this article is a Ben Volin product and I discount anything that weasel has to say. Secondly, get the "they hate their coach" chants ready.

Yep. So many bang-bang games last year. Just as the should have won vs NYJ, CAR and MIA, they easily could have lost vs NO, HOU, DEN and CLE. Such is life in the NFL.

The CIN game was a debacle...

Unfortunately it was officiating that cost us NYJ and CAR. There is no shame in getting beaten by a team who plays better or some lucky bounces but when it seems the fix is in the game becomes a joke.

Sure one could argue that the PI call on Boyce was tickytack in the CLE game but it certainly wasnt the other calls.

I caught some of the Ryen Russillo show yesterday on ESPN. Everyone on that show said this was a genius move by Belichick. They love how the Pats and Steelers are the only teams know when to cut bait with older players who are more reputation than production and get something for him.

So nationally, people seem to be more on board with this trade than locally. Granted, it makes some sense since nationally people don't have an emotional attachment to Mankins.

Brady's got that Vintage GI Joe look happening this year:

I feel the same way about this trade as I did about the Seymour trade, it does not help the Patriots win this year and I dislike it. I promise that sometime this season, we will see something happen on the field that would not have happened if Mankins was playing LG for the patriots. Whether it is a missed 4th and 1 pick up or a sack or something like that, it will happen and it will matter a lot.

I don't disagree with you, but at that moment it will be hard to measure it against any play that Tim Wright has made that maybe we don't make without another big target available. I'm not saying the trade off will be plus in our favor or even equal, but this isn't just dumping Mankins. We're getting back a talented receiving TE which is something we didn't have on this team after Gronk.

Okay, short yardage passing just gives me hives. On the other hand, the math used to be "Only 3 things can happen on a pass play, and 2 of them are bad." But if predictions here of the emphasis can be believed, you now have to elevate penalties to a "thing" on pass plays... so 2 are good. Drastic change to the odds, to be simplistic...

I'd see it as a huge loss if we lose the ability to move the chains, or score, on the ground. Undoubtedly we come closer to that with the loss of Mankins. I definitely hope "plan A" isn't "pass for 2 yards."

Yeah, I don't really like it either, and I'm not saying it's going to be something ridiculous like 95% of our 3rd and 2's are going to be pass plays. Just that it seems now our offense's strength has shifted to a numbers game, where with the variety of weapons we can utilize there is bound to be at least one gross mismatch whenever we line up. This lends itself to more quick passes in a Brady led offense.

Because Mankins never allowed a sack? If Brady does get sacked or we miss a 4th and 1, so what? It happened before when Mankins was here and it will happen now that he is gone.
