I think we can all agree it never is as they always look to future. 2007 comes to mind however.

Curran: Mankins deal proves 'all-in' never was - CSNNE.com

The notion that the Patriots were “all in” for 2014 was all wet from the start.

It’s based on the notion that the team went bananas in the offseason to make a push toward a title. It’s centered around the acquisition of Darrelle Revis.

But Revis is a Patriot today not because the Patriots felt any urgency to get the planet’s best corner (arguably), but because of a confluence of circumstances that put him in their lap.

The first domino was Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie’s asking price. The Broncos best corner in 2013 wasn’t biting on the offer Denver extended so John Elway went after Aqib Talib and signed him on March 11.

Talib hadn’t loved what the Patriots were dangling – proclaiming the offer to be ”a little shaky.”So, that put the Patriots out of the Talib business and into the market for an elite corner.

Thanks again DRC! His idiotic asking price could very well have been the start of the Pats getting Revis. But he's right. They didn't get him to go all in..he fell to them. And hopefully it lasts more then a year.

Perhaps but I think Talib would have gotten paid by another team if it wasn't Denver. Still, thanks to DRC and Tampa Bay for the assist!

I am not a Curran fan at all and I think he tends to be less than truthful IE Tom Brady's infection story. Pats have not played one regular season game yet, but lets judge the product Curran! It is what it is now just names on paper. I remember hearing Curran on Weei when Milloy got cut where was his "All in" story then. He was reading off stats to show Milloy was all washed up.

Possibly..but either way if Denver resigned DRC..they would have been out on Talib.

Why do you assume that he was "being less than truthful?" Isn't there a much higher chance that he and his source(s) just got the story wrong a bit? I doubt that he goes into things "lying.."

Curran's trying to remind us that the Patriots don't go "all in," which means that they don't sacrifice the future for the present.

To be honest, I don't believe that too many people actually thought that Belichick was going "all in" this year, based on the signing of Darrelle Revis. They still have a close eye on the future--as always.

Denver, on the other hand--probably did go "all in," due to Manning's small window that is remaining. They obviously made some questionable salary cap moves that will bite them in the ass past this year.

I think you missed the point of the article, to be honest.

The moment Lovie Smith signed to be the Head Coach of the Buccaneers was the moment the Patriots read the play and capitalized on the situation. To say Revis simply dropped in their lap is somewhat of a misnomer.

Tampa was never keeping a 16 million per man corner in Smith's Cover 2 system. Denver made a good play to pry Talib away from New England but I can't help but feel that the Patriots had a contingency plan in place and executed it.

Planning for the impossible makes it easier to react if it does happen.

I never really understood this all in. That has never been Belichicks MO. Our team is really young. It's not like this is a team that is good now, but old and done in 3-4 years. This is a team that's good now and can most likely be very good in 4 years with many of the same players. We have a bunch of young players that I'm very excited to see in the future.

I think Belichick cares about his legacy, and I don't think he would want it to be "Yeah he was great with Brady. But as soon as Brady retired the team was crap", and that's not what he has built either.

Every year, some fans call for the team to go for broke this year and not worry about next year, because this team could win it all. Yet every "this year" is last year's "next year". Every one of these rosters that has the chance to go all the way is the result of thinking beyond this year.

The best team doesn't always win (cf. 2007). Injuries happen. The more "this years" you have, the greater your chances of reaching the mountaintop.

I always felt the whole Pats are all in this season was nothing more than a media creation. Other than signing Revis, what did the Pats do that seemed to be a short term gain type of move? Hell, they drafted a developmental QB in the second round. They didn't pay for Kevin Williams or DeMarcus Ware or any other big name player who has only a few years left.

Belichick signed Revis because he is an once in a generation type of player. With Jason Lycht running the Bucs, I think he knew that Revis was likely going to get released and that they were #2 on his choice list and that the #1 team were not going to re-sign him (the Jets).

Belichick simply tries to put together the best team he can every season while simultaneously taking the bigger picture into account, and that's what this move was. Much as I like Mankins he wasn't going to redo his deal and Belichick was not going to continue with him if he didn't.They need to free up space to re-sign Revis and McCourty and they needed a move TE. It came at a cost because losing Mankins does suck bot overall it's a smart move if it keeps Revis in town for the next 4-5 seasons

And even in 2007 they didn't go all in. You can't look at any of those contracts and wonder "What were they thinking at the time?" (No, Thomas didn't work, damn him, but his contract wasn't insane for what they thought they were getting.)

Contracts no..but when looking back at it..they were going hard after it.

Let's face it: When Lovie got the job and brought in a new OC, the shark (BB) sensed blood in the water and has been circling and circling. He had Schiano up to Foxboro to watch a practice or two a few weeks ago and the two had plenty of time together.

Not arguing that, just that the Patriots weren't mortgaging the future in the attempt.

Licht probably gave BB the heads up in advance that Revis was not in their plans going forward. I also think Revis' #1 preferred destination was NE. I think the whole jests being his first choice was just to make them look bad because Revis to to the Pats happened pretty quickly.
Why do you assume that he was "being less than truthful?" Isn't there a much higher chance that he and his source(s) just got the story wrong a bit? I doubt that he goes into things "lying.."

Last week, CBS Sports analyst and former NFL general manager Charley Casserly reported New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is off antibiotics, the knee infection was gone and rehabilitation was on schedule.

Not so, reports Tom E. Curran of NBCSports.com.

Curran, citing an unnamed league source, writes that while Brady's infection might be gone, it didn't clear out until after it ravaged Brady's injured left knee and delayed his rehab timetable.

Matt Cassel, alert your accountant.

Brady tore the medial-collateral and anterior-cruciate ligaments in the season opener. He underwent surgery on Oct. 6, but Curran reports the ligaments remain loose because of the infection and another surgery will be needed to strengthen them.

If Brady chooses to have another follow-up surgery, he wouldn't be able to play in 2009. If he chooses to forego the surgery, he'll play on a feeble knee and require a bulky brace.

Curran also reports scar tissue has built up in Brady's knee, putting rehab significantly behind schedule. Curran's source said the scar tissue is limiting the knee's mobility and will need to be surgically removed.

I have zero problem with posting Peter Kings story calling out Curran, and the book that Curran was called a less than truthful.

I also suggest you go back and watch the Comcast Sports Net where he to defend himself against the national media and he claimed he does not make things up and he followed it up with his has a family to feed.

To be honest, I don't believe that too many people actually thought that Belichick was going "all in" this year, based on the signing of Darrelle Revis. They still have a close eye on the future--as always.

This paragraph is pure speculation which is a fancy word for made-up. How could "too many people" actually speak for BB and actually know what he is thinking? Again pure speculation.

Denver, on the other hand--probably did go "all in," due to Manning's small window that is remaining. They obviously made some questionable salary cap moves that will bite them in the ass past this year.

You used the word "Probably" but you would agree you really don't know being outsider looking in.

I think you missed the point of the article, to be honest.
I would beg to differ with you that maybe you missed the point!

meh......curran......if you want the best info and commentary, gotta listen to felger

You got to be kidding! The guy who sprouts "The cap is crap" and Kraft traded Mankins to sign the Soccer player? IMO Curran is the best covering the pats. Reis at one time was my favorite but his articles read more like a columnist and less like a beat guy over the last couple of years.
