Logan Mankins Traded

Late to the party but I don’t really understand this trade unless they are going to use some of the money they save this year to sign players. If they were concerned about resigning Revis and other players then they could have just kept Mankins this year and released him next season. From what I have heard Wright is struggling in almost every aspect of the game so far. Considering he is making chump change the bucks clearly did not think much of his potential.

Sure, I mean after all, he only had the best season of any rookie TE in the league last year and arguably a somewhat notable one historically.

Has anyone in the press checked into Wright's concealed carry permit status?

So 800 yards and 8 TD's this year?

You mean the same New England Patriots team that could not beat the NY Jets in the AFC Divisional Playoffs.

Yes, and who lost to the Ravens at home in the Divisionals the year before with Mankins......and who didn't even make the playoffs the year before that with Mankins......

Sorry, but you're going to find Mankins being in or out of the lineup has NOT historically changed the Patriots chances for success. There are far higher priorities on that field to signing than a 32 year old OG whose effectiveness has been eroding.

I actually like Wright. I think he's a better option at the TE2 position than the Hooman and it also means we can either kick Hooman down to TE3 (where he belongs) or to the curb. My primary concern is interior pass protection. Brady needs a clean pocket to step into and I have my concern with who Mankins replacement is going to be on top of whether or not Wendell will continue to fail horribly, excuse me, man the center position.

So 800 yards and 8 TD's this year?

I would doubt it, as he's going to take a few weeks at least to get his traction. He's basically a month behind everyone in this offense and there are a lot of good targets that will take looks away from him. What will be more important is what he does in the last 8 games going into the playoffs.

Connolly is a downgrade from Mankins just like Connolly was a downgrade from Neal in 2010. Kline and Devey are downgrades from Mankins.

To state the New England Patriots are a better football now without Logan Mankins is ludicrous.

You're talking about ONE position.

There are 11 on the field.

This move will strengthen the team at several other positions.

November 11, 2001: " “It is what it is. Nobody scripted it this way. It just worked out that way. My job — I have been here for two years — my job is to make the best decisions for the football team, and that’s what I am going to do. I am going to make the best decisions I can for the football team,” Belichick said of his decision. “T-E-A-M, as in team. I can’t make them for an individual or a group. I have to do what’s best for the entire team.”

September 2, 2003: "“This is a player and a person that I have immense respect for, and means a lot to this team and this organization. It is just unfortunate that this was kind of a casualty of the way the system is right now,” Belichick said. “Of all of the players that I have released in my career this easily would be the hardest. It’s an unfortunate situation all the way around, but one that we’ve made and we will have to move forward with.”

August 26, 2014; "“Logan Mankins is everything we would ever want in a football player. It is hard to imagine a better player at his position, a tougher competitor or a person to represent our program. He is one of the all-time great Patriots and the best guard I ever coached. Logan brought a quiet but unmistakable presence and leadership that will be impossible to duplicate. Unfortunately, this is the time of year when difficult decisions have to be made -- and this is one of the most difficult we will ever make -- but like every other decision it was made for what we feel is in the best interests of the team.”

The same Dan Connolly, who is now on the decline, that posters wanted to cut earlier this year due to contract.

Yeah, because the two contracts are very similar.......

.....and by the way, BB didn't "cut" Mankins. He got a 24 year old 2nd yr player who caught 54 passes last year and a 4th round pick.

Your analogy is way off.

At THAT position. So yes, they are worse currently at LG.

There are 11 players on the field for each team at any one time.

I can't help you if you judge football solely by the Left Guard.

So 800 yards and 8 TD's this year?

No. Hopefully he learns the routes by mid-December and can help the Patriots in the playoffs.

Who gives a crap about regular season records when the playoffs are all that matter, especially when Tom Brady is the quarterback of the team. Who gives a crap about regular season records when the New England Patriots lose to the NY Jets (of all freakin' teams in the NFL) in the AFC Playoffs. Connolly was a flop in the 2010 AFC Divisional Championship Game at the offensive guard position in lieu of Neal.

Mankins is better than Connolly at the offensive guard position. Mankins is better than Kline at the offensive guard position. Mankins is better than Devey at the offensive guard position.

......and Revis is better than Ellis Hobbs and McCourty is better than Brandon Merriwether......

I, and most people, would take the HUGE upgrade at CB and S over the marginal downgrade at LG.

Your argument is one of tunnel vision.

Tom Brady's playoff/SB record without Logan Mankins: 9-0

What are you trying to convey?

Has the curse of Mankins been lifted now? 19-0, here we come! Can't wait to get my "Three Games to Glory IV" Bluray!

I was hoping for at least a 1st round pick back for Mankins. We're only getting 4th. I hope the tight end we got in return is really good. All I know is that he is from Rutgers. *facepalm*

Really? Why? He was a very late 1st round pick 10 years ago. When the next draft takes place he will be 33.

Tippet, do you have an answer for this? I am not trying to pile on you but I think as its been pointed out that overall its probably a sensible move since the depth at TE was probably worse than a Guard. I mean we know what we have with Hoo and I am not even sure we know what we have with Kline or Connolly manning LG. I think its a good trade considering all the factors.

But what is really getting tired are the people who expect that we can keep everyone and keep everyone happy and still be the most successful franchise in the game. As soon as BB stops playing chess, its over.

Not directed at you - Of course its also nice the see the regular contingent of embarrassing whiners chime in on this with their typical All pro Logan Mankins > Some guy named Tim I have never heard of so I am gonna cry about it.

Just shut up already.

That was a one time comment that was taken out of context to some extent.

Saying :

"He hasn't played as well as Tim should be playing," Smith said. "He's dropped some balls. If you watched practice, he's dropped balls. But he's a big part of what we want to do with the two-receiver, two-tight-end set. Tim hasn't blocked as well inside. Once you're that H-back and you don't block, now they say you're just another receiver and teams start going nickel. If they do that at least you have to be a good pass catcher. Tim's a good player. He just hasn't played as well as he needs to lately."

Obviously isn't a compliment but saying he isn't playing as well as he should doesn't mean he has been bad. He just wasn't at the level he wanted him. And he DID NOT say he can't block or catch.

And then things got better :

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/136608/tim-wright-back-in-good-graces-with-lovie

“He’s responded well,’’ Smith said. “Let me go back and talk on Tim. I love Tim Wright as a football player. You go through spells where you don’t play your best ball for a short period of time. When I talked [previously], there was a little period of time where Tim hadn’t played his best ball.
“But, you look at the big picture, Tim Wright has been a good football player for us. We like what he’ll be able to do. There have been other days we’ve talked about, going forward, what we’re going to do with him. You can split him out, the matchups we have with safeties and linebackers. You can catch me at any time and I might be disappointed in a player. But, big picture, no, there’s no disappointment with Tim Wright. We like him being on our football team.’’

Obviously Lovie Smith's press conferences are more personal therapy than BB's.

Logan Mankins is or was the best offensive guard on the New England Patriots roster. This is Richard Seymour deja vu except without the first round draft compensation.

Richard Seymour was 29 years old, had just come off a year where he tied his personal season best of 8 sacks and was far closer to his prime when he got traded.

.....but yeah, other than that, deja vu.

Film review: Breaking down Logan Mankins and the Pats O-line in 2013 | Boston Herald

"Finally, of Mankins' 6.5 sacks, three came in Week 8 against the Dolphins (two against Jared Odrick, one against Olivier Vernon), and the one at left tackle was against Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs."

"The Patriots scored more touchdowns and had a higher rushing average while running behind Mankins than any offensive lineman on the team. If they needed yards on the ground last season, they clearly wanted to run behind Mankins and Solder."

Patriots trade Logan Mankins to Buccaneers for Tim Wright | MMQB

"....Mankins’ play had slipped the past three years. While he was still one of the best run-blocking guards in the league (his pulling ability freed up many big runs down the stretch last season) his pass blocking had taken a hit, most likely because of assorted leg injuries. He no longer moves very well laterally in space; it was eye opening to watch him allow five sacks in back-to-back games against the Dolphins and Steelers last fall....."

"....As for the player the Patriots acquired in the deal, second-year TE Tim Wright, this is a case of a needy team doing business with a team that has a surplus at a position. The Bucs drafted Austin Seferian-Jenkins in the second round, which made Wright expendable. I concur with colleague Andy Benoit, who wrote of Wright: “[Wright] is a former wideout who can consistently beat safeties and even cornerbacks when detached from the formation. Wright has the body control and quickness to blossom into a top-five pass-catcher at his position over the next two years.” And Benoit smartly put Wright on his “All-Emerge Team” after last season......"

Belichick once again proves the master of the cold calculus the NFL requires. The moment your pay far outstrips your actual value to the team, you're in for a big paycut or just plain being cut.
