Beat me to it jmt. Draft order has no effect determining comp picks by any reference I've seen.

I believe that Mallett is the kind of QB who will be given a legitimate shot at starting elsewhere because of his high ceiling (having a cannon arm will get you a legit tryout every time). That is why I doubt that we would only get a 7th if he walks- but neither do I think we would get a 3rd or 4th. I would be happy if the NFL management council awards us a 5th.

I find your projection to be quite realistic. I think anything in the 5th/6th round range is definitely reasonable, although we'll all be hoping for something higher.

I can understand why many people think we'll net only a 7th because of a general mistrust of the NFL management (e.g., Goodell) and how they view the Patriots, but you'd be surprised to learn that we actually are 8th overall in the number of compensatory picks we've been awarded since the inception of the system in '94.

Interesting. Thanks for passing that on. I knew that we were definitely not at the bottom of the list, as some state. I did not realize that we were quite that high though, either.

My feelings about possible 7th have nothing to do with NFL management or Uberfuhrer Goodell but simply with The Hammer's perceived lack of value. Despite this I hope for a better (conditional) pick.

Can't remember the last time I actually wanted to watch a 4th preseason game

Yeah, really waiting forward to this game. It's still very super duper early, but I'm very excited about his upside.

What??

They lose any chance to trade him after the training deadline as he is a FA. As for the comp pick, they maybe would get a 7th round pick for him. Not sure if BB right now wants a potential 2015 7th round pick more than he does an extra RB, DL, DB, or LB

a) Where dear friend is the room?

b) Have you NEVER heard of Sign & Trade? In cuts and FA, Houston has first call. Any other team must deal to move up. Meanwhile,Mallett is still the cheapest, well & fully trained, Backup QB alternative for 2014 for the Pats.

If he plays well it'll give us a good chance to trade him for someone from Rutgers.

But...but...but I read here 50 times that JAG will get himself KILLED w/o Mankins there to protect him from JP2 & the big bad Jints D!

If you're talking about this year, then the signing bonus would be paid by the Patriots nad hit the Pats' salary cap rather than the team that trades for him.

If you're talking about next year, that would require that (A) the Pats franchise Mallett, and (B) that Mallett signs the tender.

It would mean that whichever team traded for Mallett would commit themselves to paying $15M+ guaranteed (since he would have no incentive to sign for less guaranteed money; franchise tenders are fully guaranteed against skill, injury, and salary cap relief the moment they're signed).

Only when they run out of comp picks to award. Every year the NFL issues 32 "comp" picks. So if after determining that how many comp picks are to be awarded under their "top secret" formula, if that amount is less than 32, then they will issue the remaining comp picks to each team in the same order as the first round. If you look at last years draft, you will see, that the NFL issued 31 true comp picks, and then gave Houston the 32nd comp pick and the final pick in the draft.

This is a great resource as to who will and will not get comp picks:

As it stand now, the Pats will most likely get a 3rd rounder for Talib, Spikes will cancel out Browner and LaFell will cancel out Blount. They might get a 6th or 7th for Fletcher.

So if they keep Mallet this year and he signs with another team next year, any comp pick that would be generated would be subject to the total loss/signings so there is no way to even gauge what that pick would be at this time.

The issue raised was that the round in which Mallett was drafted made no difference in the comp pick not any team's draft order. My wording was unclear.

On First Take they discussed best rookie QB's so far.

Strangely, Jaws doesn't even initially mention Jimmy G, despite having the highest passer rating so far of any rookie who has played significant time in the preseason (only 9 pass attempts so far for Connor Shaw).

Even stranger, it was Screamin' A who brought up the subject of Jimmy G.
