Did anyone else get PO'd when you saw we got Wright? Not due to the player himself, but just that his acquisition makes it so seemingly clear that the 2 TE offense is back in business. After a year plus of being told "we don't do that anymore, it was just due to having two great talents at the position, we are a 3 WR offense now, no more 2 TE stuff"... I eventually nodded my head at the beginning of this offseason and said yeah, you know what, our receivers are going to be good. We don't need the 2 TE!

Then I was at the fair today with the family and my phone alerted me that a bunch of Patriots beat reporters were retweeting Glazer's tweet, I check it and see we got Wright and I just about sh*t.

I mean, come on. It's like breaking up with your girlfriend, and after missing her for so long, you finally say you know what, I'm better off now. Then she texts you she misses you, and you're back down the rabbit hole... Thankfully I'm married now and don't have to deal with that sorta stuff, but BB still feels the need to tug on my heart strings sometimes it appears.

I agree with you that there was a lot of confusion about our lack of 2 TE sets, but I think the 2 TE sets allow us to take advantage of mismatches in the hurry up with both the run/pass game.

Of course, maybe we're all just being "played" again, and the move was just to solidify the depth behind Gronk in terms of TEs who can actually catch the ball? ;)

Wright has under 14 days to learn the offense before week 1, we will employ 3 WR + Gronk + RB of choice as the base offense until Wright proves to be better than the 3rd WR on the field.

Until then, if that ever happens, he's another chess piece for the spread offense packages and a 6'4 230ish frame for redzone work.

Count on him regressing from his Tampa numbers as he is learning a new system with a QB that takes time to trust. He'll have limited practice time with Brady, to say the least, once the season starts, and won't have adequate time to adjust until next offseason when everyone gets a chance to run with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team.

Yeah, I'm not running out and taking Tim Wright in my fantasy leagues any time soon.

That said, he can end up being a nice little pickup--especially maybe the 2nd half of the season and down the stretch into the postseason (hopefully).

And bad enough to be the main reason why we lost those games, as well as almost every other game we've lost for two years running.

By that logic, we were totally fine at WR and CB last year too, and everything that was done to upgrade after replacing Talib with Revis was unnecessary.

It's possible to make the AFCCG with genuinely bad units on your team. Hell, we made the SB in 2011 with one of the worst secondaries I've ever seen.

No the Offense at Third sufficed. It was the injured and poor Defense that was the problem.

Yeah, I know it won't be instantaneous 2-TE-mania, but one would think the formation will be a staple by maybe end of this season, or hopefully at least by next season. In the interim, as you said, running out a red zone 4-wide of Dobson, Gronk, Wright, LaFell sounds quite wonderful.

That's my hope, I just hope people won't be disappointed when he doesn't repeat 50 catches and 5 touchdowns this year.

It's not going to say anything negative about Wright, but he's coming to an offense with many more options and a QB in his 15th season, not his 1st.

One saving grace is that I've read others point out that they employ a similar offensive philosophy under their current OC, so he should be familiar with the system, if he can learn the new terminology quickly he can get himself onto the practice field much quicker than say, LaFell, who not only learned new terminology, but also an entire new system and way of running routes.

Tim Wright is 6'-4", 220 pounds.

Rumors have it that Tim Wright sucks at blocking.

That's his height and weight coming out of college as a WR, Tampa began converting him to a TE, one would assume that included bulking up this offseason, which is why I'm guessing he's around 230 now.

Chances are it'll be quite some time before we see his real weight, if we ever do, as its very rare that the NFL ever updates that number, despite players weighing in on a near weekly basis, if not more often.

Tim Wright - no mini camp, no training camp, no preseason with Tom Brady at the helm.

Yes, the late acquisition isn't favorable, but one wouldn't think BB would go out of his way to trade for a player just to have him ride the bench all year. I'm sure every effort will be made to accelerate his integration into the offense as fast as possible. And some of our guys who played with him at Rutgers are citing he has a really exceptional work ethic, so that's also a factor. I guess he also has skills as a barber. The guy apparently would cut half the team's hair at a time - sounds like he goes above and beyond.

As for the salary cap savings, the following denotes the New England Patriots unrestricted free agents for the 2015 NFL Season:

Mallett, Ryan
Cannon, Marcus
Connolly, Dan
Ridley, Stevan
Vereen, Shane
Slater, Matthew
Aiken, Danny
Gostkowski, Stephen
White, Chris
Chung, Patrick
McCourty, Devin

Has Tom Jackson given his opinion of the locker room yet?

Other players over 30, after removing Tommy Kelly, Will Smith, and Logan Mankins:

TB12 - 36
Vince Wilfork - 32
Dan Connolly - 31
Rob Ninkovich - 30
Steve Gostkowski - 30

I think that's it.
Young team.

Mankins traded, Smith released, Kelly restructured and then released. You have to look at Connolly's large salary and age, but can you release both Mankins and Connolly?

In 2011, the Patriots released both Meriweather and Sanders, leaving Chung and Ihedigbo. It's possible.

My first thought after reading 11 pages of Mankins angst was "now, what's going to happen to old man Wilfork?"...who BTW is looking quite a bit heavier this year.

But I suppose Vince restructured this offseason and came back at a lower number, didn't he? And Logan chose not to.

I don't love this but I understand it. This is how the Pats have stayed at the top of the league for 15 years. Vrabel, McGinest, Seymour, Welker, Bledsoe, Law, Milloy, Vinatieri...and Mankins. BB always cuts his star players loose before they decline, unless (like Light, Faulk, Bruschi, Troy) they agree to take less money as their contributions diminish. Comes down to whether the player is willing to play for less, as they close out their careers.

Huh? Vince by all accounts is something like 20lbs LIGHTER this year and EVERY report i've seen has said he looks quicker and stronger and much closer to the 2011 playoff Vince than he looks to the 2013 "pre-injury" Vince, I think he was injured for all of 2013 and his season simply came to an end with the Achilles tear.

Edit: The eye test would also agree with everything I've read from reporters and even posters here regarding Vince at camp.

Maybe to you, but Big Vince LOST a good amount of weight.

EDIT: I see that strngplyr covered this as I was typing.

With 13m in current cap space, and projections that the 2015 cap will be going up another 10m+ or so, we're in pretty good shape moving forward.

This Mankins move cleared up some space that will be used to keep some core players.

Cannon, Marcus - should be a core player this season
Connolly, Dan - respectable guard, won't command much $$
Slater, Matthew - leader, elite ST player, maybe the contract is too much for contribution but it will be paid anyways
Gostkowski, Stephen - one of the leagues best at his position
McCourty, Devin - one of the leagues best at his position

Those are the names I'd concern myself with, maybe one of the running backs.

As I've already stated on previous threads, I think Ridley has the potential to be a top 5 back in the league if we accept his fumbling issues or he simply corrects them. Very unfortunately, I don't see either happening.

Vereen has a very unique pass catching ability and seems to be more likely to stay long term than Ridley, but he is also extremely unreliable with his health.

Chung, Aiken and White are replaceable, plain and simple.

Mallet just isn't an option.

Ladieees aaand gentleman, may I present to you...the Worst Interior O-Line in All of Football…
The New England Patriots!!!

I hope Brady's health insurance is up-to-date.

Extending Revis won't be cheap.

"Straight cash, homey."
