Logan Mankins Traded

What an awesome Trade.

01 ~ On General Principles, I value Trench Warriors like Logan Mankins far more than Glamor Position Players like Tim Wright, the Split End that we received in this Trade, but trading a good but no longer great Trench Warrior with an outrageously bloated Salary Cap Hit is, in and of itself, an astonishing, magnificent Triumph!!

02 ~ That is, far and away, the Great Impact of this Trade: Because the League insists on shackling itself with the Infernal Salary Cap, all Trades, all Moves, can only be correctly assessed with The Infernal Cap in mind...And unloading such a colossally bloated Salary literally translates into our being able to retain someone else beyond this Year.

In other words: We just traded Logan Mankins for Tim Wright, the Tampa 2015 4th Rounder, and Darrelle Revis.

Well Played, Mad Bill!!

We saved about $5 mill in cap space with this move, right?

Do you guys think he's a Patriot Hall of Famer? 6 pro bowls in 9 years and one of the meanest mother****ers to ever put on the red white and blue. I'd say so.

Do you mean total? or this year?

I'd like to know total savings. That will hae a direct impact on keeping McCourty and Revis. As that saving would (i assume roll over to next year if unspent)

I think Develin can replace Hooman's reps.

With Wright now on board, I could see LaFell possibly falling victim to the numbers game. But only if Dobson is healthy.

Agree on Devlin, disagree on LaFell. Devlin has seemingly become one of Belichick's favorite players in the last year or two. He's a very capable run blocker and has shown about as much as Hooman in the passing game.

LaFell, as stated, has been more productive than any WR currently on the roster. He may not have as much potential as some of the young guys, but he has too much experience to let go.

Takes awhile to learn that route tree. Lafell has had all offseason, OTA's, TC, etc.

Wright comes in fresh from a different system.

Highly unlikely to dump the guy who knows where he is running.

I've read also that the TE route tree and assignments are a lot less complicated to get down than the full WR gig. So hopefully Wright can pick things up faster than a WR might.

Not only that but judging by the Lafell route blunder on the 1st series of the last game I'm not so sure LaFell has the WR route tree down all that well at this stage of the game.

I've quoted these most recent posts but there has been a lot of worrying in this thread and on this board about exactly how much Tim Wright will contribute this season, coming in as he is late to a new team as a 2nd year player. Obviously with new coaches and teammates and especially a new QB there will be differences in how the offense functions that he will need to adjust to.

HOWEVER, and this is a bit of guesswork, I don't think he (Wright) is going to be learning a whole new offensive "system" or route tree. Tim Wright's OC in Tampa Bay last year was Mike Sullivan, former QB coach under Kevin Gilbride and Tom Coughlin on the NY Giants, who as we know are devoted practitioners of the same Erhardt-Perkins offensive system the Pats run. It seems to me reasonable to assume that Sullivan installed that system in Tampa Bay under Schiano, though I don't have actual evidence on that. If true, Wright should already be broadly familiar with that system and the route concepts the Pats will ask of him, if not perhaps the exact terminology the Pats currently use.

Conversely, Rod Chudzinski's offense that Cam Newton got specially-installed in Carolina, and that Mike Shula allegedly continued to run, is based on Air Coryell. So Brandon LaFell presumably is in fact learning a whole new offensive system.

So there's reason to hope Wright will be up to speed quickly.

Great trade. By the end of the year mankins' replacement will be out playing him. My prediction.

Please provide us your early candidate in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft to replace Logan Mankins for the 2015 NFL Season:

Never too early to look ahead.

I think there's a good chance Marcus Cannon could be that guy, and an impact lineman for us. I would venture to guess that the Pats' confidence in Cannon had something to do with the Mankins trade.

But if not, Brandon Scherff, La'el Collins, Spencer Drango, Josue Matias and others come to mind.

Honored to've been asked Brother Andre, and I heartily agree: It's never too early!!

01 ~ I, on the other hand, have done no Research, as yet: I'm working 80 hour Weeks, this Summer, and haven't even completed my Team Reports, yet, so Prospecting hasn't even started!!

02 ~ Side Note: I doubt that I'd be looking in the 1st Round, though I certainly wouldn't rule it out!!

I currently view Scherff as a top ten prospect. Along the lines of Aaron Donald, Scherff is wishful thinking.

Maybe, maybe not. It's far too early to anoint anyone as a top 10 prospect. Regardless, there are lots of candidates.

Fair Point.

What I was driving at, you understand, wasn't a Dollar for Dollar comparison between Mankins's Salary and what Revis might end up getting if we do indeed extend'm. It's more a matter of a combination of Transactions which prospectively allows us to justify retaining Revis beyond this Year.

Technically, you could even say that the Trade prospectively gets us half of Revis...or a Third!! :p

Obviously, this is all Speculation as to what the particulars will be ~ whether we extend Revis or make some other Move ~ but the Cap Space freed up this Year and next by this Move is enormous, and directly translates into our being able to retain or acquire Talent that we otherwise wouldn'tve.

5.83 million in 2014. 6.25m salary replaced by 420K salary in Top 51. Top 51 quirk happened with this cut. Anticipated that if Mankins were cut, a player with a 495K salary would take his place. It was actually Cameron Fleming who has a 420K salary because his cap number is 495,146. Players 52,53,54,55,56,57, and 58 all have 495K salaries.

6.49 million in 2015
7 million in 2016.

How much salary cap space do the New England Patriots currently have to roll over for the 2015 NFL Season?

True, but I could see a realistic scenario where LaFell ends up falling behind Edelman, Dobson, Amendola and Thompkins on the WR depth chart making his roster spot value ..... questionable.

I do a pretty good job of keeping it updated. Please note that this is a hobby and that I have a real job during the day so do not expect updates while I am working:)

Have Pats with 13,118,604 in cap space after today's moves.

Personally I would shocked if the Pats went interior OL in the 1st round next draft. There would have to be a real dumpster fire at the position this year for that to occur. The Pats have carried or drafted like six first-year players the last year - Stork, Halapio, Barker, Cave, Devey, Kline - and even if absolutely everybody craps out the Pats have demonstrated the ability to find Nick McDonaldses and Donald Thomases on the street mid-season and turn them into effective players on the inside.

Plus we have two more tackles - Cannon and Fleming - people here just will not stop projecting at guard, not without some reason.

Penciling in a 1st round OG would be like penciling in a 1st round WR at this time last year.
