I think it is imperative that we start Marcus Cannon now that Mankins is out of the mix. Cannon has proven capable of starting and playing at a high level in the NFL, he is very talented and just turned 26 years old. Last season he allowed just 1 sack, 4 QB hits, and 12 pressures starting in place of Sebastian Vollmer, to put that in perspective prior to the injury Vollmer who is an all pro had allowed 2 sacks, 1 QB hits, and 13 QB pressures, so Cannon was on par with one of the best.

I know some doubt his ability to play OG but that is unlikely to be the case. The following OGs entered the NFL as OTs:

Logan Mankins
Dan Connolly
Alex Boone
Jahri Evans
Rodger Saffold
Marshal Yanda
Josh Sitton

Many others as well but those are just notables. The move inside is much easier than moving to the outside, Cannon will be able to do it and I believe he would be a pro bowl OG.

Thoughts?

if he cant get in the starting line up now with mankins gone then it will never happen and he will be noting more then a injury fill in. that just my Opinion

If it doesn't happen at guard now it will never happen but he's still a very good tackle and he will be starting soon if not for us probably elsewhere when he is a free agent.

Sounds good to me.

I'd say that he's worth a look. Imperative might be a bit strong an assessment coming from the cheap seats.

Reiss has previously suggested that the Pats value Cannon very highly, but that they could be outbid for his services after this year. I think that trading Mankins opens a window to extending Cannon this year, and making him a long-term starter at either guard position, with the ability to move to tackle if needed.

From your lips to God's ears. He has played well of late.

Cannon is one of the more talented OLs that the Pats have. But if he isn't given a real opportunity to start, I believe he will walk as a FA next off-season. He's earned it.

He may even be a partial reason why Mankins was traded. In the military the term used is "up or out".

After watching the Saints game, I just don't think he is cut out to play guard. He lacks lateral agility and it shows whenever he has to pull. He is a pretty good tackle but I wouldn't break the bank for him. Brady has shown that he can play with scrub tackles throughout his career. ex Ocallahan, Kaczur, Okinaja etc.

Cannon has played on the left side which could indicate a move there and I doubt it would b tackle. I always said Cannon at LG and Fleming at RG could be our future guard tandem. Both are about 6'5 and 330-340 lbs with very good athleticism for the guard position

Yeah but Brady had problems with Ocallahan and Kaczur. Marcus provided nice protection

I love the idea of Cannon at guard, but the fact that he hasn't really spent time there says a lot about the difference between what I think and what the coaching staff knows.

I don't think the assessment that he can be a G is based on the fact that some random other players who were t in college became pro Gs especially ones that don't have similar skills sets or stats from pro football focus.
I'm pretty sure that if he is one of the 2 best Gs on the team the coaching staff will have him on the field and if he isn't they won't.
I trust this coaching staff to evaluate that properly.

Cannon filled in well for Vollmer last year. I think the reason he hasn't seen any playing time at guard in camp is because Vollmer has been out. The last thing you want is Brady out there in pre-season with some rookie playing RT!

I thought drafting Cannon was a great move, an absolute steal in the 5th round. I feel he can play guard. It will be interesting to see if BB puts out a "first team" offensive line to start tomorrow night.

Great points I have not been that impressed with Marcus Cannon he's an above average RT but not beyond that. Guards have to be able to move somewhat Cannon is like a Phonebooth who has no agility to get to the second level and his straight ahead power blocking isn't that great either. I like him as Back-up Tackle but I think he would make a Horrible Guard.

Cannon is not a guard and will never be a guard. This has been going on since the day he was drafted. His value is at being a backup Tackle. Our best bet is hoping that Stork gets healthy and is better than Wendell and we can play Connolly at RG.
