Logan Mankins Traded

I hope it all works out right but for now a see this as the Seymour trade it will workout in a year or two but could hurt them this year

Or if Wright has a second year jump like many second year players, it could help them a lot this year. What if Wright has 70 catches, 770 yards, and 8 TDs this season? That is definitely a possible second year jump for him especially moving from Mike Glennon and Josh Freeman to Tom Brady.

You're telling me you're not surprised at this move at all?

BB does this almost every year. Milloy, Seymour, Vrabel, Moss, Welker, and now Mankins. If you've followed BB and the Pats, you should've seen this coming. BB always parts with players right before they hit a decline in their career. "Better a year early than a year late".... and they have been consistent with that over the past 10 years. Welker technically wasn't cut or traded but the point remains the same. The Pats basically let him walk.

I'm surprised that some people are still surprised by this. Reading through the Mankins thread, there are so many people who are "floored" and "shocked" by it. People are in disbelief.

I'm actually surprised it didn't happen earlier.

Mankins is overpaid. He was one of the highest paid players on the entire team. No matter how many Pro Bowls he's been to, he hasn't performed like a 10 million dollar Guard in the past couple of years. He's also 32 and at the tail end of his career. Now we got a move Tight End (position of need) who is young and only making 500k per year. Last season he had the 3rd most receiving yards of any rookie Tight End in the past 10 years. and we got a draft pick as well.

We have a lot of players that will need to be re-signed next year, and this move will help free up cap space for that. Revis, McCourty, Vereen, Vollmer, to name a few.

Oh, and Wilfork is probably playing his last year in New England. Wilfork will be the "surprise" trade or cut next year.

No one is "special" to Belichick. Good guy Vince is loyal to the organization and probably thinks he will get different treatment than those who went before him... but his fate will be the same as theirs. Maybe we'll get a 3rd rounder out of Oakland for him next year. Wilfork will be pissed, but he'll retire in a couple years and come back a few years later, teary eyed, while getting inducted to the Patriots HOF just like Ty Law did this year.

Don't be surprised if Brady gets shopped around sooner than expected either. If Garoppolo keeps playing as well as he has, BB will have no problem getting rid of Brady a year early. The only thing that will save Brady is if he brings home another Lombardi. BB makes good business decisions and NO ONE over 30 is ever safe.
Sure. If we had taken someone like xavier su'a filo in the first round then I would agree with you. But we didn't. We don't really have anything behind Mankins. I wouldn't be surprised if we part with Brady before Garappollos contract is up if he looks good and Brady looks to be declining. But if all we had behind Brady was some UDFA or some just drafted late rounds pick that haven't really stood out yet then I would be suprised and shocked by his release.

I know the Pats have a habit of doing stuff like this. But you are seriously not the least bit surprised that we cut our, by a good margin, best player at a position that most consider the position of biggest weakness?

I am not that surprised. Pats needed a move TE and cap space more than they needed Mankins or BB clearly felt that unless he is deliberately trying to sabotage the team,. Cap space to sign better players in probably more important positions. This assumes they feel they have an adequate replacement on the squad at guard. I will go out on a limb and assume they do or they would not have done this. I will also assume that none of us know how well the other OL players have been or could be. So time will tell.

This kind of thing should be expected as it is a regular occurrence with the Pats. Chess.

Plus with cuts coming and more moves, who knows what the OL will look like week one at this point.

If it allows them to retain McCourty/Revis, then all the better...

There were many here who did not see Mankins staying past 2014 or at the most, 2015 ( I was not one of them). It appears that Belichick has viewed this as a "year too early vs a year too late" kind of thing again.

I'm never shocked by a veteran cut. I always know one is coming. But I'm somehow always surprised by WHO the veteran cut turns out to be. BB is basically the Velociraptor of NFL coaches.

He's more like the George RR Martin of NFL coaches. This trade is like the beheading of Ned Stark. Just wait until our "Red Wedding" comes which hopefully will be years away.

Hopefully Wright is our yearly steal from Tampa (Talib, Blount)[/QUOT

I noticed on Miguel's site that they save $42 m by cutting Tom Brady next year.

Pastfans next year?

Edit: No, I don't think that will happen.

People keep talking about how bad the O-Line was last year but that's not really the case. I read an article a while back about it and just take a look at the stats...yeh Brady got sacked a lot but some of that was him or the WR corps.

Get home after a day on the Vineyard, log in, and this. The Pats are never boring at least.

Just saw this. This is crazy... Mankins was supposed to retire a Patriot. WTF?

If the trade was in part due to Mankins "declining" skill set, I'm wondering if this perception was arrived at thru a consult with Scar. I know he's retired but everyone n most importantly BB views Scar as the gold standard.

I am honestly not sure how I feel about this trade. IF the savings means more Revis, I will like it. IF Wright is a solid contributor, I might like it. We shall see.

But please, PLEASE stop using "they got rid of an All Pro LG" in arguments. I would feel more comfortable with Mankins on the line, but calling him an All Pro is disingenuous at best.

Another point: Mankins was a leader in the locker room. This might not be so well accepted by the team

They hate their coach part deux?

Jesus, now I'm worried. Felger likes the trade. We're screwed, blued and tattooed...

Yeah, but Maz hates it so we 'be hot that going for us. Plus, Felger says it's only good as long as it isn't the Pats being cheap, so he's waiting to see.

Tim Wright!!

If Cannon did get moved and was a capable RG, and Vollmer stays healthy, that line would be about on par with last year's, IMO. LT stays even, LG gets much worse, while C, RG, and RT are all upgraded. The problem is that on par might not be good enough. Every poster here went into the offseason figuring that an upgrade was necessary.

I bolded the key parts of your comment. This line NEEDED improvement to keep Brady upright against the elite DL. It will be tough enough for the OL to keep up with last year's performance with a Pro Bowler out of the mix, and I don't think anyone here thinks that the backups are better than Mankins.
As bad as the other teams in the division are, they have solid DLs. Hopefully the Pats OL can perform against them ( also vs Det, Den)
