Logan Mankins Traded

Wow, i didn't see this coming. I wonder if there's something we don't know (injury, drugs, personal issues, etc...)
Age, performance and $$. Simple as that. Plus, need for TE.

I'm never shocked by a veteran cut. I always know one is coming. But I'm somehow always surprised by WHO the veteran cut turns out to be. BB is basically the Velociraptor of NFL coaches.

If you'd seen Mankins contract and factor in his age..... he was by far the most obvious candidate to be traded.

Hernandez was improving as a blocker to the point where he wasn't an outright liability playing in-line, but that didn't happen right away. Wright will be entering his second year in the league, he has plenty of time to improve his blocking. This happens with guys who weren't traditional tight ends in college. College wide receivers like Wright don't learn to block. Antonio Gates went from being utterly unable to stop a Pop Warner defensive end his first couple years in the league to being among the better blocking tight ends in the league in his prime.

that's because the design of the plays evolved over time.....hernandez managed to get in the way some, but he never held up well even against LB's

I think the same kind of thing can be executed with this guy

yes but O-Lineman are hard to find. I just wonder if there is something we don't know about Mankins. Perhaps we will never know because BB doesn't leak stuff

i wasnt aware that mankins was possibly going to be our starting center...

Interior line play is linked. As bad as Wendell looked last year, he would have looked worse if he didn't have Mankins to cover for him. And Mankins looked worse than he was because Wendell was so bad next to him.

Uh yes they do need the money if they want to keep Revis and McCourty and likely extend Chandler Jones at some point next year. Some people, myself included had Mankins as a potential cap casualty after this season.

They also need a TE that can catch the ball. Did you not see the TE play when Gronk was out last year? Oh wait you couldn't because it was nonexistent. Guy had 54 catches and 541 as a rookie playing with a rookie QB last year.

he was the only guy on the bucs other then Jackson with more then 29 rec, look I like the kid and do agree they need it a other opt then Gronk at TE but they gave up a all pro RG on a team that throws the ball 500+ times a season and already had a average interior offensive line, I just don't see how this helps the team this year when the biggest problem the pats have had in the playoffs since 2007 has been Brady not being able to step up in the pocket

I'm surprised it took this long after Mankins held out, and trashed Bob Kraft. Hes been in decline for the last five years, and has played his worst in big games particularly play off games. At times looking like a turn style in pass protection. In 2010, Mankins hold out year, Connelly took his place and did a fine job, Mankins wasn't missed, the offense never skipped a beat.

Kind of funny to contrast your summary of Mankins with Belichick's official remarks:

a back up TE and a 4th round pick for a all pro RG. I have to say I don't like this move yes Mankins is 32 and making 6 million with a 10 million cap hit but its a week away from the season and they don't need the money and they don't need a TE that bad Gronk will be ready I don't get this move

Is Mankins an All Pro anymore? He did give up nine sacks in the last 8 games last year.

And who said Wright would be a back up? He could become what the Pats intended Hernandez was which was a starter opposite Gronk.

BTW, Mankins is a LG, but not to nitpick.

I hope it all works out right but for now a see this as the Seymour trade it will workout in a year or two but could hurt them this year

No, but he was a LG that was helping Wendell on a regular basis. He was also the best OL on the team. Given those two on top of the fact that Wendell is possibly the worst starting center in the NFL, I will send my prayers to the Brady family for Tommy's health if Mankins is gone and Wendell is starting.

Why are people always surprised by veteran trades/cuts?

Why are you not?

I think the biggest impact on this trade will be the run game. Clearly, Mankins is one of the best run blocking guards in the league. He is possibly the best trap guard in the game I've ever seen. Though one can easily argue that our running game was just fine when he missed some games in previous seasons. Also, Wright is a bad run blocker so there's that.

When it comes to passing, I think we'll be just fine. Mankins is mediocre at pass blocking and Wright can become a huge threat for this team when most teams will clearly focus on Gronk. This can potentially add a huge dimension to our passing game. We'll see...

Deus stated that he thinks anything less than a first round pick would have made this a terrible trade, but that might have been an initial gut reaction.

Im not sure how much he's letting his objectivity get compromised by his love of bashing Belichick for making these kind of trades but I agree with him at least in that I personally feel this trade should have been over a third rounder not a 4th.

Kontra, I share your feelings on Wendell, but it looks like it's been trending towards the team sticking with him & Connolly, and probably moving Connolly back to RG out of necessity anyway. Devey has not proven a capable starting RG from what I can tell.

We were stuck with Wendell before this trade went down.

Wendell and Connolly starting? What could possibly go wrong.

Because it's happened so many times before.

It should be expected by now.

So if Brady and Revis get cut in the next round, you won't be surprised?

I'm hoping to see either Stork at C, Connolly at RG or Connolly at C and Cannon at RG. I remember when I used to be on your end of the criticism of the interior OL play and you used to be on BM's end. My, how times have changed.

Yep, I wildly misjudged Wendell after 2012. No qualms in admitting that.
