Roster Projection Thread, after preseason game 3

I agree that if Cannon were the best RG, he could start and still be the backup OT.

However, I would note that espn noted that Belichick said that he has not made the decision among the three contenders for the starting RG position. BTW, none of Belichick's three is named Cannon.

I'm considering keeping 10 OL with the thought that we will use an OL as a blocking TE often times.

is there some special king of Patsfans prize you win for making all these rosters every day, every week ,every month?
It's fun and interesting to some of us. If it isn't for you then you do not have to participate in the thread. There is no right or wrong way to be a Patsfans.

I dont think its necessary, because you can keep them on the ps.
Even using an OL as 3rd TE you would only have an absolute max of 8 active.

That makes sense to me. Who do you think are the best candidates for the practice squad? I'm thinking Halapio and a TBD.

We now agree on 51 players. I suspect that we have never been this close. Also, I would be fine with your choices on the last two positions. I suspect that we agree because this is a very strong roster.

I have Fleming instead over Anderson. I've seen little from Anderson. Actually, I hope that Anderson makes the roster. I presume that Fleming is Practice Squad eligible.

I also have Wendell over the loser of the Devey-Kline battle if Stork isn't ready instead of Barker, or as a 10th OL, if it is deemed that we need 9 useful OL's and Stork doesn't qualify. It seems that we have had developmental on the OL before. Don't we usually have 2-3 backups on the Practice Squad?

Surely, we need a backup center if Stork is useless. Why not put Stork on the IR-Return list? BTW, espn
reports that Belichick indicated that the starting center position isn't settled and that Wendell is still a possibility. Belichick clearly thinks more of Wendell than those on message boards. That being said, I have no problem with Barker if he is deemed to close to what Wendell can give.

OK, I will attempt this. I never know whether you guys are giving the roster you want, or predicting the one BB will keep. I'll do the latter.

SUSPENDED (2)
CB - Browner
WR - Tyms

Last 3 cut, or could make it depending upon what BB is thinking that I am not smart enough to understand

Boyce (what is holding him back? Does he have a role in a log jammed unit?)
Manieri (I cant totally dismiss the possiblity that we keep 3 TEs given that we do it so often)
Barker (We may keep 10 OL, especially since Stork is useless, and the RG situation is really shaky. Barker has been in the system a year. PS for him though I bet)

That makes sense to me. Who do you think are the best candidates for the practice squad? I'm thinking Halapio and a TBD.
If you're cutting Wendell, I suggest that Barker and/or Cave be on the Practice Squad.

With regard to your issue at OT, the 4th OT is often on the Practice Squad. This year, we will carry Fleming on the 53. He could be active as an emergency backup (an 8th OL) if the need arises. I'm OK with a 5th on the Practice Squad, perhaps Manieri.

I think Anderson is far ahead of Fleming.
As far as OL, I could see a number of permutations. I cut Wendell because I don't see keeping 3 Cs, and until Stork can play (I am assuming he can go full in practice now) Devey or Kline could be the game day active who could fill in.
You could cut any two of Barker, Wendell, Devey, Kline or Stork and I wouldn't bat an idea.

I think we usually agree on the big stuff, and have good discussions on the minutae so I think its not surprising that we have almost the same roster.

Well after today's cuts here is my current guess:

QB (3) Brady, Garoppolo, Mallett
RB (5) Ridley, Vereen, White, Develin, Bolden
WR (6) Edelman, Amendola, Thompkins, LaFell, Slater, Dobson
TE (2) Gronkowski, Hoomanawanui
C (2) Connolly, Stork
G (3) Mankins, Devey, Kline
T (4) Solder, Vollmer, Fleming, Cannon
DE (4) Jones, Ninkovich, Buchanan, Worthy
DT (5) Wilfork, Easley, Jones, Siliga, Vellano
ILB(2) Hightower, Beauharnais
OLB(4) Mayo, Fleming, White, Collins
CB (5) Revis, Dennard, Ryan, Butler, Arrington
SS (3) Harmon, Ebner, Wilson
FS (2) McCourty, Chung
ST (3) Gostkowski, Allen, Aiken

A couple of notes.

  • I really liked the way Gray ran Friday, but Bolden is a lock as a ST player. Hope Gray can make it to the PS.
  • This of course is for the first 4 games with Browner and Tyms being suspended.
  • Wendell out; can't sneak Stork onto the PS and Connolly has too much versatility.
  • With Tyms perhaps being on the roster after game 4 will they even try to get Boyce on the PS?
  • Cuts of Kelly and Smith says a lot about the status of Siliga and Chris Jones. Vellano improved enough to make Kelly expendable.
  • I think we will play a 4-3 base not a 3-4 but with the ability to mix and match depending on situational requirements.
  • When Browner returns we could see a Safety cut. With the Pats putting many teams in come from behind situations the nickle and dime sub packages will be even more prevalent.

I love the talent this year, just hope we can stay healthy.

Halapio, Jon
Finch/Gray
Boyce/Maneri
Gallon, Jeremy
Davis, Ja'Gared
Morris, James
Davis, Kanorris
Thomas, Jemea

AFTER THE CUTS
A) Kline as the odd man out at OL instead of Wendell
B) both Worthy and Vellano, and no Moore ( I am still nervous about our injuries at DT)
C) 6 linebackers (down from last year's 7), includes special teamers
D) 5 safeties (all are special teamers)
E) We are thin at DE depth. I hope that we get some DE reps from Fleming or Hightower. Patchick suggests Easley.
G) We probably SHOULD add Moore or someone instead of one of the special teamers at SS or LB.

Agreed on the OL.

Moore instead of Chung. BB sounded very high on him at yesterday's press conference. I don't see him letting Moore get away.

New England Patriots projected 53-man roster - espnBoston

Mike Reiss chimes in with a few bombshells (relatively speaking):
- Stevan Ridley gets the axe from Reiss - He has 4 RB's with Jonas Gray taking the 4th spot (not including Develin)
- The 3 QB's "Might be the best QB Depth Chart BB has ever had in NE"
- 2 TE's
- 6 WR's with Boyce over Tyms
- 10 OL with Devey making the cut over Halapio
- 9 DL
- 5 LB - A group that looks really thin
- 6 CB with Butler on the team
- 4 S with Chung and Ebner over Tavon
- 4 Specialists

Who had Tommy Kelly and Logan Mankins out?

Drew Bledsoe
Tom Brady
Damon Huard
2001 clearly better.

Better in terms of generating threads?
Maybe 2000, with Bledsoe, Bishop, Friesz, and pick 199. The hundreds of 'play Bishop in the red zone' threads era.

Impossible to say at this point that 2001 was "clearly better". You raise a good point, but jury is still out on Jimmy G.

Ah that's a great evening's argument! Surely 2014 Tom Brady is vastly preferable to any of the above?
