BB has called Logan the best Guard he has ever coached in his statement about the trade :(

NY Jet defensive player upon hearing of Mankins trade: “I’m not surprised.”

Yeah, because rex ryans system of assembling a team based on who would look good as a tattoo, who's fun to hang out with and who has the nicest feet is just racking up the wins and titles over there right?

Bill Belichick on Logan Mankins: "Logan Mankins is everything we would ever want in a football player. It is hard to imagine a better player at his position, a tougher competitor or a person to represent our program. He is one of the all-time great Patriots and the best guard I ever coached. Logan brought a quiet but unmistakable presence and leadership that will be impossible to duplicate. Unfortunately, this is the time of year when difficult decisions have to be made - and this is one of the most difficult we will ever make - but like every other decision it was made for what we feel is in the best interests of the team.

My 2 cents (part deux)
4) "Better to ship out a year too early than a year to late"....The Book of BB
5) Big contracts for quality Pats are in the near future...BB gettin ducks in a row

And Wendell is probably the worst starting center in the NFL. If he starts this year while Mankins was traded, it's a huge gaffe and my prayers go out to the Brady family.

Agreed. Which is why I will only stomach this if Wendell is NOT the starting C this season.

a back up TE and a 4th round pick for a all pro RG. I have to say I don't like this move yes Mankins is 32 and making 6 million with a 10 million cap hit but its a week away from the season and they don't need the money and they don't need a TE that bad Gronk will be ready I don't get this move

Uh yes they do need the money if they want to keep Revis and McCourty and likely extend Chandler Jones at some point next year. Some people, myself included had Mankins as a potential cap casualty after this season.

They also need a TE that can catch the ball. Did you not see the TE play when Gronk was out last year? Oh wait you couldn't because it was nonexistent. Guy had 54 catches and 541 as a rookie playing with a rookie QB last year.

I might be adding 2+ 2 to get five, but in light of the Mankins trade, this tweet today was of interest:

The reason being, that in a rare leak of a Patriots draft board, we know that the Pats graded Williams pretty highly:

If you zoom in on the image you'll see that the Pats had him graded as a 7.0 whilst those being drafted around him, including Harmon had 5.5s.

Best Post of the Thread. Good work, officer!

Most backup TEs don't generally catch 54 balls in their rookie year from (at best) journeyman QBs. There's a video of him from last year in the Meet Tim Wright thread. You should watch it, it will make you feel better.

Guys...we agreed on this point when it was about roster projections...BB will keep the players he thinks will be best in December, not September...why can't the team building concept be the same?

Forget every other reason, can u say 100% that the Oline of this year (even w/o any more moves) will be worse than the one from last year come December? I don't believe anyone can with much certainty

Hopefully Wright is our yearly steal from Tampa (Talib, Blount)

edit: They even gave us Revis for free ;)

If this trade means a long-term contract for Revis, I'll consider Tim Wright and the 4th round pick as gravy. The Revis contract would make the trade worthwhile regardless of what came the other way.

Mankins draft in 2005...

"What the hell are the Pats doing??!! He's a tackle!!! They are crazy!!!! Logan who??? Could have gotten him in the sixthground!!! BB is an idiot!!!!"

flash forward to August 2014...

"what the hell are the Pats doing??!! He's an All Pro guard!!! BB is crazy!!! Wright who??? Should have gotten at least a 2nd round pick!!! Pats are stupid!!!"

SSDD

Who here is dissapointed? Have we ever had a Trade with Tampa Bay that hasn't worked out?...still waiting! Hey if this is what ii takes to keep Revis Island who here wouldn't do it? Vollmer if Healthy can paly Left Tackle in a pinch. I like Mankins for what he's done for us but he's not perfect. On the move TE Tim Wright is anybody here based on recent history holding their collective breaths on Gronk playing all 16? I will believe it when I see it. Remember what we said when Gronk went down last year, we need a TE that can be a threat in the Passing game even if we have to sacrifice Blocking. We are a Pass First team anyway. Tim Wright got those numbers with literally nobody throwing to him at QB what would be do with Brady a Hofer? he's going to be mismatch in our Passing game he's going to give LB's and Safeties fits. I like the move.

To the best of my knowledge, Wendell is still on the roster.

As to your second point, that could certainly be the case. However, in light of recent events the notion that Mankins only looked bad because of Wendell's suckage doesn't appear to have much validity.

OTOH, Belichick drafted Wendell's successor too.

54 catches in the passing challenged Tampa offense....as a rookie......i'll do this trade every day of the week. Brady now has 4 big targets....and midgets tooo

Guess that pretty much discounts the whole "BB got ride of him because he still held a grudge about the 2011 salary negotiation" argument.

That trade for TE Alex Smith worked out so well.

I am so thrilled with this trade! I have been saying for years that the Patriots should figure out a way to part with this guy for the following reasons:

1. A guard should not be one of your top paid players because they cannot impact the game as much as a top cornerback, safety, wide receiver, tight end, or defensive lineman. It's just a fact. Mankins missed some games in the last few years- sometimes big chunks of time- and the offense didn't seem to miss him at all.

2. If you are going to pay any player like a superstar, that person should not constantly be the goat in the biggest games of the season. Mankins has gotten destroyed numerous times in the postseason. I know he had an injury in some of those games, but he still got annihilated.

Mankins was a very good guard, but the moment he signed that contract he became a liability from a cost/production standpoint. In the NFL, you can have maybe five players that are going to get elite contracts. If you are going to pay that much, you should sign players who are going to really be the difference between winning and losing.

We are going to be sick in the RZ with all these Big Targets took BB a while but he finally figured it out Bigger is most times better.
