Wes Welker suffers concussion in preseason game

Also want to add that ironically, Julian Edelman is the best slot receiver out of Welker, Amendola, and Edelman, and it isn't even close. I would hardly say that Belichick "won" the deal by passing on Welker and instead throwing a ton of money at Amendola. It is also hard to say that the Broncos "lost" after fielding the highest scoring offense in NFL history and signing Welker to a relatively inexpensive deal. All in all, it seems that both teams overlooked Edelman, when in fact he is the best of three players. The Patriots merely got very lucky that their "backup slot receiver" made some huge strides last year and doesn't appear to be slowing down. They certainly didn't do much to retain him and could have lost him to the open market, but many teams were scared off by his injury and his "system receiver" status. I think it is clear that while Edelman is best in the Pats system, he is still a really good player and not easy to replace.

Thanks for sharing the article. Is the following below true? I thought Welker went back to the Patriots before they went after Amendola.

No, as soon as Welker said he was testing the market they signed Amendola. They couldn't risk having neither of them.

It's been well documented on here that we've generally blamed Manning for Welker's last few concussions. It's also documented that Manning has a history of throwing his WR's right into harm's way. Ask Austin Collie and Dallas Clark about that. The hit Collie took that probably did the most damage by far (@ Eagles, 2010) was directly Manning's fault. He had no business putting Collie in that sort of situation and Collie paid dearly for it.

For those of you who don't remember the play I'm talking about...

If you're Peyton Manning, how in the world do you not see the safety flying toward Collie like a bat out of hell before you release the ball?

Ridiculous. The QB is not supposed to throw the ball if his receiver is going to get hit 3 or 4 steps after making the catch? Collie is just not built for the NFL game and Welker had a bunch of concussions in NE before the concussion protocol was in place. The Manning hate on this site is just as groundless as the Brady hate on other teams' boards.

He was throwing Collie into triple coverage with the safety very clearly closing in for the kill shot. He had to have known that Collie was going to get lit up and threw it anyway. How many times have you seen Brady throw a ball like that? Please name the instances.

I can't recall any, probably because almost all NFL receivers other than Austin Collie would not be almost killed on a routine reception over the middle.

You mean except Collie, Welker, and Clark (just to name 3 that may be drooling and wearing a bib when they hit their 50's because of Manning)?

Ok, Kontra, you tell me how these two throws from Brady are somehow different (other than the level of toughness of the receiver) from the Manning play you highlighted.

Play 1: Reed is behind Edelman and makes a great hustle play.

Play 2: No difference.

In the one I posted, Manning leads Collie into triple coverage with a safety bearing down on him from the top. Again, how he didn't see the highlight reel hit coming is beyond me and he certainly deserves blame for leading Collie into that. But then, it honestly doesn't sound like you disagree with me.

Karma is a *****.

Welker's career is basically over. He is becoming increasingly susceptible to concussions and it will only get worse. Dude needs to get out and save what few brain cells he has left.

Looks like another example of Belichick selling a year early rather than a year late.

Well, I'll actually give you the Collie argument, but if you mean to tell me that Pay-a-ton did not lead Welker (his oft concussed receiver) into trouble in a meaningless preseason game, you are smoking some that fine Colorado stuff (and I want some). His throw was up and to the outside shoulder, which lead him DIRECTLY into the path of the oncoming Swearinger. Had the pass been lower, and even slightly behind him, Welker would have be somewhat "less" exposed to the defenders by simple body positioning. This throw was terrible on the part of the QB.

Good to hear Weller is doing much better then the last concussion. Hopefully no more for him.

I hope Wes is put into the Pats Hall of Fame, and he'll always be among my favorite Patriots, but it is time to quit.

Broncos HC John Fox stated yesterday that Welker never brought up the thought of quitting, just like everyone figured.

He's not going to quit until he gets one more really brutal concussion after this, in my opinion. Even then, he may not quit for good.

I agree with you that he should, but we're talking about WWW...

The problem with this argument is that he probably wouldn't have had multiple concussions last year if he had stayed in New England. If Brady feels he has no choice but to throw into a situation like that, he'll often throw the ball in such a way as to try and draw the receiver away from a brutal hit (e.g., near the ground a couple feet away).

Don't forget Anthony Gonzalez

The way I look at it is that it is Welker's prerogative to continue playing, but I am going to have a hard time feeling sorry for him if he ends up like Kevin Turner, Wayne Chrebet, or Junior Seau. Unlike those guys, he knows the risks of continuing his career after multiple concussions in a relatively short period of time.

Forgetting the vitriol he has for Pats fans, I think he is twisting things. I don't think Pats fans have ever said Brady has never thrown a pass where he put Welker in a bad place to get lit up. Every QB unfortunately does that from time to time.

Ironically, he blast Curran for suggesting that Manning had some responsibility for Welker getting a concussion on Saturday and then goes on to say that Manning should have thrown somewhere else on that play.

Manning's history speaks for itself. He has had multiple receivers whose careers were derailed by multiple concussions. Brady doesn't. Yes, Welker plays a style that invites concussions, but that doesn't change that fact.

BTW, I don't blame Manning for all three of the concussions (and blame on this last one is a bit of overstatement anyway). One or two of them were clearly not his responsibility at all. But the first example he gave of Brady is laughable, when Brady released the ball the CB who laid out Welker was covering OchoCinco at the time Brady released it.
