Logan Mankins Traded

ok..what??

The Oline was already terrible, mow we just have the worst in the league. I have no idea how Brady will survive an entire season with that. Good luck Tom.

LOL take a breath, the patriots Oline is not the worst in the league.

The Patriots weren't getting anything more than a 4th rounder and a promising prospect for Mankins. He's getting older and his salary is very high for the next two years as a guy at a non-premium position entering the backend of his career. The high salary limits the market because many teams can't afford to take him on. If they waited until next year, they probably would have just had to release him outright.

The question is not whether the return could have been better, it's whether the return was worth going into this season plugging someone unproven into an interior line that was already shaky on a good day. But the potential value to the Patriots isn't just an upgrade at tight end and a mid-round pick, it's also salary cap room that could be used to extend players such as Revis and McCourty who are simply much more valuable to the team than a 33 year old Mankins. It's worth waiting to evaluate the trade - Mankins could fall off a cliff completely and Marcus Cannon is a revelation while Tim Wright looks like the second coming of Hernandez without the sociopathy, or the Patriots interior line could be a complete catastrophe, Tim Wright is awful, and Revis/McCourty still walk. We'll see.

This news has floored me. Gobsmacked. I trust BB inherently - but this is going to hurt, very badly, at least short term. I'd get some injury insurance Tom, if you don't have any already.

What makes you think he'll get heavy coverage with edelman, amendola, thompkins and Gronk on the field?

Could you show me where I said he'd get heavy coverage here?

I must confess to not having seen him play, but what makes a 220lb guy a TE and not a slot receiver. It doesn't sound like Tim Wright is much of a blocker and isn't a threat to play inline.

actually, can't be any worse than hernandez was

groove with me

I'm a bit disappointed it's a 4th... to me, it seems like a late move like this is only done if the return is better.

Other players over 30, after removing Tommy Kelly, Will Smith, and Logan Mankins:

TB12 - 36
Vince Wilfork - 32
Dan Connolly - 31
Rob Ninkovich - 30
Steve Gostkowski - 30

I think that's it.
Young team.

Mankins traded, Smith released, Kelly restructured and then released. You have to look at Connolly's large salary and age, but can you release both Mankins and Connolly?

In 2011, the Patriots released both Meriweather and Sanders, leaving Chung and Ihedigbo. It's possible.

I like getting another weapon for brady in the passing game, and getting another move TE..

BUT will it be worth it if Brady cant stay standing with the OL?? I guess time will tell whether the line as is can keep brady upright. If they do this will be a solid trade. I'm interested to see how the line looks this thursday

No doubt, Mankins' contract would turn into a problem later. But we have to put on the balance the present too. The interior O-Line was our weakest quality-wise, and our best man just left. When we are on close race with another contender (The Donkeys) and our GOAT QB is 37 YO we shouldn't trade some future relief for some present struggle, specially if it isn't a great opportunity (4th round pick + Tim Wright is not considered great).

Plus, the Salary Cap is said to increase steeply next year and we are still going to suffer a cap penalty this year and the next one, so is the trade really worth it?

Not even mentioning the Locker Room effect. Mankins was a leader, he was respected by all here. This will affect morale within our team

Morale will be fine. Always is. If the team signs Incognito then is becomes real interesting.

For the irony factor, Richie Incognito (had a recent visit with the Bucs).

Maybe while Incognito was there he gave the Bucs GM a wedgie and threatened to punch his sister. And the Bucs said "Oh HELL NO!"

On edit: added "Bucs GM", forgot Glazer passed away, sorry.

One thing for sure...I'm NEVER getting smacked by no gob...

The old-timers are dwindling down to even a more precious few.

Only Brady, with Mallett & Garoppolo behind him, and Vince with Siliga, Worthy and Easly behind him, and Connolly with Cannon, Devey, and maybe Fleming behind him, remain.

But every squad has at least one and frequently two young, talented, proven, veteran to lead them. Brady, Gronk, LaFell/Edelmen, Ridley/Vareen and Volmer/Solder, cover every squad on Offense. Revis, McCourty, Mayo, Wilfork and Jones do the same on Defense. Ditto for Gostowski and Slater on ST.

This may be the youngest, still but veteran team, that Belichick has ever fielded.

I think BB is setting up to win until 2020, and the CAP shape seems comfortable

So...the obvious question becomes: Why is Wendell on the roster and Mankins not?
You're making the assumption that Wendell is on the roster. You're also making assumption that trading Mankins had anything to do with Wendell and not everything to do with the Salary Cap and getting Wright.

This is more about cap savings than performance...look at who we have to resign...Revis,McCourty,Vereen,Riddly,Vollmer...Mankins was also grossly over paid...
Ridley won't be re-signed.

and don't worry. Wilfork will be cut or traded next year anyways so that will clear up even more cap room.

Hernandez was improving as a blocker to the point where he wasn't an outright liability playing in-line, but that didn't happen right away. Wright will be entering his second year in the league, he has plenty of time to improve his blocking. This happens with guys who weren't traditional tight ends in college. College wide receivers like Wright don't learn to block. Antonio Gates went from being utterly unable to stop a Pop Warner defensive end his first couple years in the league to being among the better blocking tight ends in the league in his prime.

I'm guessing they looked at the numbers and saw they'd have to release a guy they want to develop...Halapio, maybe?...and knew they wouldn't have him next year anyway.

So they pulled the trigger, got something for him, and cleared cap space.

But not sure I like it.

If Brady hadn't restructured his deal, he would be gone by now too, IMO.

Interior pass protection was the team's major weakness in 2012 and 2013. Naturally, BB responds by trading away the best interior OL (and best OL altogether) on the roster? This, on the surface, appears to be a move that hurts the team needlessly. Not high on the compensation, either. I just don't see the point.
