Logan Mankins Traded

It's unlikely that Wright saw "a lot of heavy coverage" with Vincent Jackson on the field.

What makes you think he'll get heavy coverage with edelman, amendola, thompkins and Gronk on the field?

A 4th round draft pick?!?!?! Oh my god... this can't be happening

Was waiting on a Mankins trade for a couple of years now, surprised it came this late but the cap space saved....McCourty & Revis getting longer stays in Foxboro?
I agree. I wanted to make a thread about getting rid of Mankins just last week, but I knew people would jump down my throat for it.

He was the most overpaid player on the roster. He's a good Guard, but not for that money. Age wise, he's nearing the end of the road.... and that money would be better allocated towards Revis/McCourty

This is more about cap savings than performance...look at who we have to resign...Revis,McCourty,Vereen,Riddly,Vollmer...Mankins was also grossly over paid...

we are not going to be resigning riddly, vereen is borderline at the moment.

Anyone who's justifying this by saying that Mankins isn't that good and is on a steep decline... did you think that yesterday?

He's obviously declining, sure. And he was probably gone this offseason anyway, so I understand getting some value for him now. But I find it weird that half of the posters here suddenly think he's a JAG when yesterday 90% of you would have said he was a very good guard. He is a good guard, and we're going to be worse at LG this year. Hopefully interior line play doesn't end up being this team's achilles heel yet again.

I said a few months ago that he was declining and was was getting a pass based on his name the last couple of seasons, but I would have readily admitted that what was behind him was a downgrade as well. Clearing the salary makes sense and I'm not unhappy with the return, but the interior line is even more worrisome than it was before. And it was the biggest worry I had on the team besides the second safety.

I don't like this at all. This O-Line was scary while he was here and now, IT'S EVEN MORE SCARY. I hate this move.

I have really mixed feelings about the move. i hate the 4th rounder, that is simply not enough for Mankins, even with the back-up TE. I am also really concerned about the interior OL but have to say that Belichick and the OL coach whose name I won't bother trying to spell have a much better read on it and I don't see Belichick deliberately subjecting Brady to more pressure and have to guess that Mankins play had declined enough to warrant the change. The key to the whole thing is the salary cap implications and potential deals for Revis and McCourty. Often times when Belichick makes a significant move, as he did letting Welker go, it is followed by a move to address either that situation or another one he sees with the team. With Welker it was straight up and Amendola was signed immediately, in this case it may be that they have had serious negotiations with Revis and McCourty and have to free money under this year's cap to finalize them. I really hope this is the case and not simply a cap dump for a sucky 4th rounder and a back-up TE, which is simply not good value for a great player.

Pro Day numbers for Wright - note at 219 pounds as a big WR.

6-3.0, 219
4.65 40
19 reps
36" VJ
9' 10" BJ
7.27 3C

He's bigger as a TE, presumably a bit slower and less agile.

I still think the OL will be:

Solder - Kline/Devey (whoever wins) - Connolly - Cannon - Vollmer

The only weak spot should be at LG, with C/RG improved. In theory, anyways.

oh stop crying...it's not like no one has never jumped down your throat before...endlessly:D

I'm stoked about the 4th rounder......combine that with the conditional 7th for mallett and I'm gonne be glued to the TV for the draft next year

I love change.......good or bad......

The Pats must have been eying this move for awhile now. Two interior line picks in May could be explained away as just taking shots at players they liked, but Kline and Devey especially getting the work they did in preseason, especially at LG, points to this not being a spur of the moment decision.

What in the hell?..........................

I mean, I hate all those untimely Mankins penalties and whiffs in playoff games too, but he was an anchor for us.

I must confess to not having seen him play, but what makes a 220lb guy a TE and not a slot receiver. It doesn't sound like Tim Wright is much of a blocker and isn't a threat to play inline.

It's Volin, so believe what you want:

NY Jet defensive player upon hearing of Mankins trade: “I’m not surprised.”

I know he was comfortable enough to trade him.

So, you pull a reply out of your rear-end that you know can't be proven or contradicted, and then think that this follow-up somehow justifies your SWAG? Dude, just stop. You clearly didn't watch the games and didn't watch Wendell doing miserably. You also clearly missed that Wendell has been with the 2nd/3rd unit all of TC.

Wendell fails to pick up twists, stunts, and MLB delayed blitzes by the on a regular basis. It's how Brady got plastered by Ray Lewis 2 years ago in the AFCCG. At least 5 of the "sacks allowed" by Mankins were because he was trying to cover for Wendell's screw-ups last year.

I'm so distraught I could just...eat five pints of Rocky Road...

ok..what??

The Oline was already terrible, mow we just have the worst in the league. I have no idea how Brady will survive an entire season with that. Good luck Tom.

for those upset at the move:

The Guard position can be upgraded, we just acquired a 4th round pick (maybe a 4th and a 3rd for Boone?) and we have Kline, Connolly, and Cannon. The team/BB has a plan.

If you don't know about Tim Wright, he's in the move TE mold. As an UDFA last year with Mike Glennon throwing him the ball, he was became the 2nd focal point of the offense and his biggest games were against Seattle, Philly, New Orleans and San Francisco, all of which happen to be playoff teams 2 of the top 3 defenses in football and another top secondary in NO.

So...the obvious question becomes: Why is Wendell on the roster and Mankins not?
