Logan Mankins Traded

Mankins got blamed for many of Wendell's screw-ups... This idea that he's on a steep decline is BS over-exaggeration.

Apparently Bill didn't agree.

They signed Wilfork and I imagine this is a big part of what the trade is about-moving salary.

Boyce and Tyms must not be feeling too good about this deal.

Tyms doesn't have to worry until week 4. Boyce, sure. Also Mallett.

1) DaBruinz, he was a UDFA ROOKIE!!!!!!

HE was chopped liver also. Good for him in climbing up out of the muck. Now he gets to do it on a team LOADED with receiving options and Tom Brady at QB. (Psssst......kinda makes it easier for him).

2) If (according to your contention) "they didn't have anyone else other than Vincent Jackson and Tim Wright to pass the ball to." that means he must have seen some pretty heavy coverage on him last year, no?

Shmessy - You clearly didn't think too hard before you replied. There wasn't squat for Wright to compete against in Tampa last year. So him being a UDFA doesn't make a damn bit of difference.

It's unlikely that Wright saw "a lot of heavy coverage" with Vincent Jackson on the field.

32 years old whos play has slowed a bit. Makes $6.25m. Team saves $5.7m. Personnel team believes that it has talent on the roster that is capable of producing at the same 2014 projected level.

For the trade they get a TE receiving threat/insurance if Gronk gets hurt again (which is a possibility)

They also get a 4th rounder and free up cash to sign a FA.

I can live with this.

Upgrade Wendell at C now or the new LG will suffer worse than Mankins.

Apparently Bill didn't agree.
Gotta be the stupidest thing posted so far.. Pulled that one right out of your arse, didn't you. Figured you just make garbage up because you know it can't be proven..

4th Rounder + Tim Wright (a move TE)+ increasing the probability of extending Revis & McCourty for a 32 year old LG that is the highest paid LG that is on the decline IMO is a fair deal to me.

I was obviously hoping for more than a 4th. It all depends on what BB can do with the pick and the cap space. Mankins to TB for Tim Wright + a 4th that he flips to SF for Alex Boone + the cap space to extend Revis and McCourty = brilliant move. But that's counting on a number of things happening.

TE: Gronk, Wright, Hooman
WR: Edelman, Dobson, KT, Lafell, Amendola
RB: Vereen

Brady shouldn't be weaponless ever again for the remainder of his career. All we really need to do is extend Vereen and the offense is pretty deep for the next 3-4 years.

Anyone who's justifying this by saying that Mankins isn't that good and is on a steep decline... did you think that yesterday?

He's obviously declining, sure. And he was probably gone this offseason anyway, so I understand getting some value for him now. But I find it weird that half of the posters here suddenly think he's a JAG when yesterday 90% of you would have said he was a very good guard. He is a good guard, and we're going to be worse at LG this year. Hopefully interior line play doesn't end up being this team's achilles heel yet again.

I can live with this. I like Mankins but he was certainly on the decline (see Bengals game and last Super Bowl) as long as one of the younger guys can step up I think we will be okay on the Line. I'm really excited about Tim Wright in this offense I think he could be a great number 2 paired with Gronk.

I think most of us knew mankins was 85% gone next year anyways, its just one of those big name moves BB makes from time to time that catches you off guard.

I would be totally fine with this... if we had a proven C and/or RG. Mankins is in the decline, and while he's still very good, he was going to be a cap casualty next year anyway. But making this trade now just makes the weakest unit on the team even worse. Looks like someone out of Halapio/Kline/Devey is going to have to be ready to start right away.

Re: Wright, he was pretty good in Tampa last year, and being a Rutgers guy I'm sure Belichick has been scouting him for the past 5 years. But I have a hard time seeing he alone being worth the kind of upheaval that this is going to create on a key unit of the offense. It only kinda makes sense as a trade-off to me if the pick is a good one (1st or 2nd round, and I can't imagine TB giving up a 1st).

I'll never understand how Belichick can look at Brady--a pure pocket passer if there ever was one--and elect to start three unproven and/or bad interior linemen in front of him. I fully expect this to be the team's achilles heel; it's by far the weakest unit we have.

Solder-Connolly-Wendell-Canon-Vollmer

Methinks you are exaggerating. To me, the only weak spot is Wendell. Connolly is average. The other three are B+'s.

All well and good, as long as an upgrade at OLine is in the works, then I agree with you.

I know he was comfortable enough to trade him.

Initially I was pissed but the TE Wright was good last year. I'm now willing to take a wait and see approach before passing judgement on the trade.

Wendell is a bad center, and Connolly isn't a good guard. We saw what a Wendell/Connolly C/G combo is good for last year, and the answer was not much. And I agree that Cannon may be an excellent RG. It's entirely possible, but he's definitely unproven.

Presumably the return is low because Mankin's salaries in 2014 & 2015 are high: $6.25 and $6.5mm.
He is a very good, but no longer elite guard.

As others have noted, the return seems to be the cap space cleared more than the player and pick in return. On it's face, the Patriots just traded a first-round offensive lineman for an undrafted rookie free agent TE/WR. However, the Patriots just cleared that $12mm two-year salary from their books. Money that can be used on younger players. He was the second-highest salary cap cost, behind that QB.

Note that he will still be the 8th most expensive player just with his dead-cap money.

Tampa Bay drafted Austin Seferian-Jenkins and has starter Brandon Myers, so last years's udfa struggling in the preseason is a luxury.

Always surprising.

Wright is a little light for the position

as for mankins......saves the pats a bunch of $$...... Revis 4eva

I think part of the deal was also absorbing Mankin's cap hit. Tim Wright's hit is not even 500k.

No doubt, Mankins' contract would turn into a problem later. But we have to put on the balance the present too. The interior O-Line was our weakest quality-wise, and our best man just left. When we are on close race with another contender (The Donkeys) and our GOAT QB is 37 YO we shouldn't trade some future relief for some present struggle, specially if it isn't a great opportunity (4th round pick + Tim Wright is not considered great).

Plus, the Salary Cap is said to increase steeply next year and we are still going to suffer a cap penalty this year and the next one, so is the trade really worth it?

Not even mentioning the Locker Room effect. Mankins was a leader, he was respected by all here. This will affect morale within our team
