Curran thinks Mallet will be cut or traded

The Patriots weren't going to get rid of Mallett untill they were sure JimmyG could cut it. None of us know if there were offers or not, just that BB didn't act upon any. Now it looks like BB thinks JimmyG can cut, so we will soon find out if there is any interest in Mallett or not.

Totally agree, but even the level of interest now won't shed much light on what the level of interest pre-draft was. Plugging in a new QB in September is never desirable.

Always thought that Mallett was overvalued on this board and overrated in the NFL...

Not convinced that he is worth all that much..

I think any trade of Mallet would probably have a low base compensation with escalator should he perform.......but we'll see.

Imagine if they did trade him to the Rams and he started week one. That would mean 4 players who started their careers with the Patriots would be starting week one in Brady, Cassel, Hoyer and Mallet plus they would have the heir apparent looking really good.

A segment sports radio would never air.

Reminder that this year

49ers got the lowest 3rd round comp pick for Dashon Goldson whose contract has a APY of $8.3M.
Atlanta got the lowest 4th round comp pick for Brent Grimes whose contract has a APY of $5.4M
Green Bay got the lowest 5th round comp pick for Eric Walden whose contract has a APY of $4M
Pittsburgh got the lowest 6th round comp pick for Rashard Mendenhall whose contract has a $2.5M

Does anyone have an idea what time todays cuts will be announced?

I think we carry 3 qbs for at least half a season. don't care if the other one is Mallet.

Light just dawned on marble head here but it just occurred to me that with Tyms & Browner suspended for 4 games, BB might delay going to 2 QBs until that time were he to feel that he needs more time to eval JAG or that JAG needs another month to really learn the offense. The trade window is still open at week 4.

Thurs will see if my fantasy of only 2 QBs on the roster has a chance. JAG has to play decently, showing some command of different offensive sets and show some progression in his reads and only make a couple rookie bonehead mistakes. If he does this, there's enough developmental talent on the 75 to warrant a Hammah cut or less likely trade for a late pick with conditions.
Interesting to ponder whether Gropp's performance Thursday will be a factor in determining whether Mallett stays or goes.

I'm betting that Mallet is not cut or traded. There's just no value to making that move. And carrying 3 QBs btw is SOP around the league. The Pats have even carried 4 QBs once, PS that was the year we kept Brady.

I think it will be a huge factor. Never expected JAG to contend this early for #2. BB probably as well. Thurs will be huge. Surprisingly, #2 is JAGs to lose in my view.

I agree, the long months of speculation about Mallett to the Texans help in this situation.

Personally, I think the Raiders should be calling. Their QBs: Matt Schaub, Derek Carr, Matt McGloin.
Why would the Raiders go after Mallett when they drafted Carr in the second round and probably feels like he is their future starter?

I could see it, but you realize that Brady and McDaniels won't have any time to spend with him during the regular season. He looked awful in practice, then pretty good for a couple weeks, but I've seen too many high draft picks who played against top schools go from ****y to shell shocked when all the pressure was put on them.

Is the 53rd player really that important? We've been warming a seat for Jake Bequette and nameless others that aren't worth anymore than the 53rd player on 31 other teams. If they aren't worth as much as your 52nd best player, why worry about them?

On the other hand, a quarterback (and a D-2 one at that) needs time to learn, practice and gain confidence. I'd hate to to see Garoppollo still throwing into triple coverage because of slight pressure, like he did in an otherwise good performance, but that's what happens when every decision you make is important.

So, a QB developing bad habits because he's rushed in with no backup, to hold a warm seat for a Bequette type? Easy answer for me.

I have no problem with grop as #2, by the way. Just don't want him without a more experienced backup.

The value is in being able to keep a player that may actually help you win a game some time during the season over a QB who won't (if JAG has passed him on the depth chart) play any meaningful snaps.

Have you seen any indication that Mallett would make better decisions? I haven't.

The value of a cut would be a freed up roster space.
The value of a trade would be a freed up roster space + whatever is brought back in trade

You're quite right, I had a brain freeze on Carr. Sorry, back to our regularly scheduled St. Louis fantasies!
