One way or another, Ryan Mallett could be done in New England | ProFootballTalk

On Monday’s edition of PFT Live, Tom Curran of CSNNE.com said he believes that, without a trade, Mallett will be cut. The possibility that this year’s potential buy-low-sell-lower rookie, Jimmy Garropolo, will play the entirety of the preseason finale suggests that the Pats hope to avoid an injury to Mallett, which could put the team on the hook for his entire base salary of $776,976.

So if Mallett’s going to be cut, how could he have any trade value? Because Mallett has only three years of service, he’ll have to pass through waivers if he’s released. For a team relatively low on the pecking order, the only way to get Mallett would be to trade for him.

For the Patriots, anything will be better than nothing. Ultimately, the only thing they may get is a conditional seventh-round pick.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he gets cut. No need to carry 3 QBs, Mallets in a contract year, and Garoppolo looks like he's already passed Mallet on the depth chart anyways.

Trade wise - We'd be lucky if we even get a 6th-7th rounder for Mallet. Trading him might be the best option just to keep him out of the wrong hands (Jets).

I would hate to cut Mallet and have the Texan's pick him up for free as petty as that might be.

I wouldn't care if the Texans pick him up for free. All Mallet is doing right now is occupying a roster spot. I'd think someone would at least be willing to part with a 7th rounder though.

Doesn't NE get a comp pick if he leaves? I've read conflicting reports on this.

It's not a given. It depends primarily on how many free agents the Pats sign next spring versus how many they lose, based on comparable salaries. For each vet free agent that was not released that the Patriots sign, the likelihood of receiving a compensatory draft pick goes down.

Even if they do get a comp pick for him, it won't be until the 2016 draft.

It's an interesting game of Russian Roulette, to cut players (Ridley and Mallett) who may have some value to other teams (Free Agency) and lead to compensatory draft picks.

Why not trade mallett to arizona for Housler?

If I a team who wants Mallett, I wd ask myself: what other teams want him? If none, then no trade. If two or three more, then I trade a 5th or 6th rounder, depending on my perceived competition.

Posted this in the other thread but history kind of backs him up. It's either been the backup or Brady who started the 4th preseason game. Don't think BB would keep Mallett if in his assessment Jimmy has already passed him.

2013- Mallett started
2012- Mallett started
2011- Brady started
2010- Brady started
2009- Hoyer started and played the whole game
2008- Cassell started
2007- Cassell started
2006- Cassell started and played the whole game
2005- Flutie started
2004- Davey started and played the whole game
2003- Brady started
2002- Brady started
2001- Brady started and played the whole game

To be honest, I want Mallet to be traded because I want to see him playing, not because of any compensation although it would be good for sure.

Based on last year's record, the Texans would get him if multiple teams claimed him off waivers. That gives them even less incentive to give the Pats anything in a trade.

Thurs will see if my fantasy of only 2 QBs on the roster has a chance. JAG has to play decently, showing some command of different offensive sets and show some progression in his reads and only make a couple rookie bonehead mistakes. If he does this, there's enough developmental talent on the 75 to warrant a Hammah cut or less likely trade for a late pick with conditions.

Barring some kind of monumental collapse in the Giants game, it sure feels as if Jimmy G will be the backup QB based on game performance. The media keeps putting out the question of who could hold the ship steady if Brady was unable to play for a few games and from what I've seen, which is limited I realize, Jimmy shows poise and leadership and has been able to move the offense; Mallett is spotty on this score. It would be nice if they could get a 7th for Mallett, but if they can't he should be cut.

If we could get a 4th Rounder for Mallet we should consider it a blessing. The guy has been passed by a Rookie considering he has had Three years behind a Hofer. Mallet's play have been sub par also our expectations of him as a Quality Back-up have not been met. Houston's Coach our Former OC O'Brien didn't even make a run at him I thought that ws somewhat telling. I cannot see the Patriots carrying Three QB's Mallet doesn't give us the Best chance to win IF Brady goes down Jimmy G does. I cannot see carrying Mallet as our #3 QB over a positional player who can contribute on ST's. We can pick-up some scub Rookie QB or two and stash them on our PS incase we need the arms.

Because the Texans have first claim, and because of the Texans-Patriots connection, and because of the Texans' QB situation, I'd guess that teams would be thinking they'd need to trade in order to get him.

If the Patriots intend to cut Mallett, it won't be this week. The last thing the Patriots want is for Brady to be the backup to Garoppolo against the Giants.

The Patriots weren't going to get rid of Mallett untill they were sure JimmyG could cut it. None of us know if there were offers or not, just that BB didn't act upon any. Now it looks like BB thinks JimmyG can cut, so we will soon find out if there is any interest in Mallett or not.

I agree, the long months of speculation about Mallett to the Texans help in this situation.

Personally, I think the Raiders should be calling. Their QBs: Matt Schaub, Derek Carr, Matt McGloin.

From the #6 overall pick in the draft to a cut/conditional 6th/7th rounder.

Wow, what happened? (That's a joke, I know he wasn't ever going for a #1 pick let alone the #6 overall pick, but some insisted he would).
