Schefter reporting Kelly, Anderson and Smith cut

Realistically, run defense is not the primary consideration in 2014 era NFL football. I suspect that the Pats would be thrilled to see their opponents try to match Brady point for point by running the ball up the middle.

Sure looks to me that Belichick is matching what looks to be an aggressive secondary with a young, quick front line that can play infinite games going after the QB from all directions. Nikovich, Jones, Easley, and Worthy are all explosive pass rushers.

I don't think we are looking at the old Pats' two-gap run stuffing zone coverage bend but don't break defense. Belichick is nobody's fool. He, of all people, knows it's a passing league.

But he won't adopt a gambling, blitzing Defense. His defenses will remain solid. It will still be a Bend don't Break, just with more Pass Rush and better secondary play.

Awaiting the Jake Bequette roster cut ........

tick .... tick .... tick ....
I would expect Bequette to play lots and lots in the final game. He might start. Who else is playing DE? I certainly don't expect to see Jones or Ninkovich.

You said the same about the tight end position and Justin Jones.

it actually makes me feel good.....it has to mean BB feels relatively good about the other DT's......and i wish kelly the best

So, I've wrong before.

Obviously, there is an issue with regard to Jones to be so bad that he don't justify playing the 4th preseason game and a try to put him on the Practice Squad. There's a story there.

Justin Jones is history.

As for the defensive end position, Zach Moore and Michael Buchanan are still under contract with the New England Patriots.

All I took from this was mgteich learnt how to quote properly.

I just know that in order to not risk him (Gaffney) like Carolina did, we'll have to wait until the final round of cuts this coming Saturday to move him straight to IR without risk of waivers.

If there were some other players placed on IR prior to final cutdowns, I'm pretty sure they were exposed to waivers first, before they resorted to IR. Maybe @Miguel could weigh in when he gets a chance?

It could be that starting Sunday that teams were allowed to place players on the various reserve lists. Teams are already placing players on Reserve/Pup, Reserve/NFI and IR

Yes, Gaffney expected by all the writers to be put on IR today (so before final cut down). Would love it if someone could find the actual rule...

and for all those holding their breath, BB has come clean on Kelly:

On release of Tommy Kelly, Belichick says, "It was the best for the football team....There were no negatives on Tommy"

Ask and Ye shall receive...

this is the best I could find:

Injured Reserve rules need an overhaul | National Football Post

Permanent IR: Players with a major injury will be put on a team’s Injured Reserve (IR). These players may not return to the active roster for the rest of the season and the club retains their rights. These players are paid their full salaries or a split amount ( usually journeymen and later round picks) as negotiated in their contract

Short term IR/Designated for Return: A new rule modified in 2012 allows one player per team to be reactivated from the IR list. A player with a major injury placed on the IR list must be immediately “designated for return”. The designated player is eligible to return to the active list if he has been on the IR for at least 8 weeks from the date he is placed on IR.

Waived/Injured: When a team waives an injured player any other team may claim him. If a player clears waivers the player is immediately reverted to IR or the team will negotiate an injury settlement to allow the player to pursue other opportunities with another club.

Injury settlement: Instead of putting the waived/injured player on the IR for the rest of the season a team will negotiate an injury settlement if the player has a chance of returning from the injury in that season. Once a settlement is reached that player is released and free to pursue another team. The amount of the settlement is based upon the number of weeks the player is “estimated” to be unable to play. This comes in the form of a team doctor’s opinion and a second opinion doctor of the player. For example if a player is estimated by the team doctor to be out 5 weeks but the second opinion doctor believes it could take up to 8 weeks, the agent will seek to have the player paid for as close to the 8 weeks as possible, 8/17th’s of his total year’s salary.

Thank you. I should have been more specific. I am looking for the rule that provides the date after which a player can be placed on IR without exposing the player to waivers (apparently today). CAR wanted to put Gaffney on IR but had to expose him to waivers, which is how we got him. Now we want to place him on IR without exposing him to waivers. Several articles said the team had to wait until the final cut down, but several writers said they expected him to be placed on IR today.

RT "@jeffphowe: Tyler Gaffney will be placed on injured reserve today, according to a source."

You can thanks teams like Dallas and Washington in the 80s for these rules. They were stashing young players on IR, so the league now mandates that the injuries have to be "major" and the salaries count against the cap.

From these definitions, I fail to see why any team would designate any player whose rights they wish to retain as "Waived/Injured". It makes no sense? We must be missing some obscure rule like you can only put a guy on IR if you have a roster spot or something.

Yeah, I was looking for that too, couldn't find it

It was lack of positives that doomed the vets

You can place a player directly on the Reserve/Injured list after the first cut down (which used to be 80 to 65, is now 90 to 75), per Article XVIII of the NFL bylaws.

(B) Any players placed on Reserve/Injured prior to the roster reduction to 75 players on the Active List will not count on the club's overall roster limit of 90 players, provided that the club requested waivers on the player with the designation "injured" and placed the player on Reserve/Injured immediately after the expiration of the claiming period and provided that all such players will count on the club's overall roster limit after 4:00pm New York time on the day of the cutdown to 75 players.

If you get a chance, check out the bylaws. There's some weird stuff, like that teams have to pay $100 to claim a player on waivers.

Thanks for the help regarding the situation of Gaffney @DaBruinz @Miguel @primetime @FreeTedWilliams and @Mack Herron.

I was under the impression that we had to wait until Saturday, but as pointed out--you're able to do it during first cutdowns.

No worries Supafly.. They changed it during the last CBA, I believe. With the number of rules, by-laws, sub-sections, etc, it's hard to remember/know what is what.

So we moaned about the surprise release of Tommy Kelly.

Now that he has signed with Arizona, we will really gnash our teeth if Kelly replaces Sopoaga, and the Patriots end up responsible for Sopoaga's 2014 salary.

Kelly replaced Sopoaga on the Cardinals.

They cut Sopoaga and kept Kelly.
That costs the patriots big.
