Could Jake Bequette Actually Make the 53?

If he roids up like his twin, Ryan Kerrigan, then he could become a player. Also I read Kerrigans college coaches and trainers saw he didn't have the bend/flexibility of elite pass rushers but did have good speed and burst and urged him to work on his flexibility like a gymnast or tae kwan dow student does. Then roided up for power/explosion and became a good player. If Beqette does the same he could be as good as Kerrigan. Buts risks suspension. However Zach Moore looks like a good prospect naturally. He is raw but has size, length, explosion and power to develop. He has run sub 1.6 10 yard splits, over 10' broad jumps and around 36" verticals while showing really good bend/flexibility at near 280 lbs, and that's raw, without sec coaching/training. He should get a shot to develop. I think his raw talent is better than Kareem Martins. With good work ethic/technique training he could be a Michael bennett type talent

Comparing Jake Bequette to Ryan Kerrigan is insane. Obvious talents aside, Ryan Kerrigan is also quite good in coverage -- something I don't think Jake Bequette has ever even done in college.

I don't think there is a single poster who has predicted Bequette surviving cutdown.

But with Smith gone, it appears to be down to Bequette or Moore, who just doesn't seem ready to make a 53 to me, as the #4 DE.

It's not unprecedented for a player to make it to year 3 without really contributing anything, but very rare. Marquise Hill (RIP) is the only one I can think of.
Yes, Bequette could make the squad as a developmental DE and special teamer. Given that he is useful on Special Teams, I could see Belichick preferring him to Moore.

Yes Kerrigan is better in coverage but he has worked on coverage and flexibility/ agility since college whereas Beqette's senior bowl practices happened to be his first coverage experience. Kerrigan is also roided up which makes him a better more explosive pass rusher. But your right as they stand kerrigan is waaaaaaay better a player and Moore /Buchanan need a shot due to raw skillset

I like your posts, Gymrat...at least you have some guts.

He obviously gave us the best chance to win the last two years.

Bequette has more lives than a cat, figuratively speaking.

I don't think any of us would keep him on our 53, but that sure as heck doesn't mean BB won't go ahead and keep him anyway. Lots of potential roster surprises could happen.

He's stuck around for this long while doing almost nil, so what's changed, really?

this is where my 53 is at right now. I can't see a scenario wherei would keep him:

QB (2) Brady, Garoppolo
RB (4) Ridley, Vereen, White, Develin
WR (5) Dobson, Edelman, Amendola, Thompkins, LaFell
TE (2) Gronkowski, Hoomanawanui
C (3) Connolly, Wendell, Stork
G (3) Mankins, Kline, Devey
T (4) Solder, Vollmer, Cannon, Fleming
DE (4) Jones, Ninkovich, Buchanan, Moore
DT (6) Wilfork, Jones, Siliga, Easley, Vellano, Worthy
ILB(3) Mayo, Hightower, Beauharnais
OLB(2) Collins, Fleming
CB (5) Revis, Dennard, Arrington, Ryan, Butler
SS (2) Harmon, Wilson
FS (2) McCourty, Chung
ST (6) Gostkowski, Allen, Aiken, Davis, Slater, Ebner

Total players: 53

Suspended: Browner, Tyms

Possible IR: Stork.

PS: I have dropped Bolden off this list as I am happy with White at RB3 and also think we can stash Gray on the PS. IMO I want Vereen and Ridley with the carries this year and White in spots. Gray will do just as good a job as Bolden if one of these guys is injured. I am no Bolden hater either. Just a numbers game.

Traded: It won't happen but I am comfortable with JG as QB2. If we can get a 6th out of someone for Mallett I am not opposed to it. But I am also comfortable keeping him at the expense of someone like Davis on ST.

Special teams: Davis, Ebner and Slater. To an extent Tavon Wilson is on this list too.

bequette is gonna be here a while.....i gave him an inappropriate tape of BB and me......sorry guys

As a 3rd round draft pick, Bequette was given the luxury of time to show he could develop. He hasn't shown any significant development as far as I can see. After 3 training camps and 2 seasons with little or nothing to show, I think that his time is up. Sure, he may blossom eventually, but the odds of that happening diminish significantly over time. Moore may not prove to be any better, but he hasn't had enough time to show that yet.

Agreed. I think the clock has run out on Bequette and it's do or die time. I just can't see a third season of virtually no production whatsoever. So if he makes the 53 this time around, one would think BB has seen enough to believe Bequette is ready to contribute on some level ((and whether BB would end up right about that is very much a ???)).

It isn't like BB to hold onto a player just because he was a higher round pick. BB must see something that convinces him the guy can be a player with the right molding (excellent Work ethic and bright glimpses of ability during practice???). But, again, times up! The roster spot is too valuable to use on a player who isn't giving any production.....

Is there some kind of inside joke I'm not getting here?

What our "eyeball test" and BB's "eyeball test" sees are two different things, always go back to the days of Richard Seymour and this board would lament his poor play.. the middle of the week BB would ascend to the podium and give him high praise, something like the best game he has ever played for us.

Without knowing the specific assignments it is difficult to assess the outcome... not a big fan of Bequette, but maybe he is kept around this team.. because he does his job???

Discussions about the "49th player" on this squad are always interesting...

Has Moore played on any ST? He certainly has the raw athleticism to play in space on kick coverage and punt return.
