Schefter reporting Kelly, Anderson and Smith cut

(1) You ask me "when did we carry more than 9 DLs", but you start with 9 DLs but admit a 10th. To answer your question, in 2012 the Pats had 11 DLs on August 31 on their initial 53 man roster; in 2011 they had 10:

(2) When has the final roster ever been set after initial cutdowns?

As of today I would probably keep Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Michael Buchanan and Zach Moore as "DEs" along with 6 DTs, as you discuss (Wilfork, Easley, Siliga, Jones, Worthy and Vellano), expecting that there will be a lot of moving guys around at different spots on the DL. But I also think there is a darn good chance of picking up another player in the next 2 weeks. There is clearly a need for another veteran presence, and for a DE.

Right now I think that 9 DLs, 5 LBs and 10 DBs (including STers) are very likely as a starting point. Whether there's room for another DL, LB or DB (not including Browner's 4 game suspension) will depend on BB's analysis of the offensive positions and who has the most to add to the final roster.

Zach Moore making the team is a shock to me, I had him as PS all along.

I liked the Anderson FA signing feeling that it was a potential cover LB acquisition. However he did not pop out in that regard in camp or in the 3 games. What I thought sealed his fate was his limp attempt to simply push the Eagles player out of bounds where he went on to gain over another 10 yards. Unforgivable mistake and/or lack of serious effort for a vet.

These cuts certainly send the signal that lack of concerted effort from anyone will not be tolerated
Do your job.
He was whiffing in one of the other two games too.

Justin Jones has also been cut.

Martin is on the NFI list, so he won't count.
Gaffney will go onto the IR list, so that will be another.

This could help shed a little bit of light:

Sealver Siliga sheds cast, returns to practice - espnBoston

Siliga is out of his cast and in full pads, thought not quite back to practicing fully, he has 2 weeks to rehab and get back in shape. Conditioning shouldn't be an issue since it was only a hand injury for him, but he may need to rebuild some upper body strength.

I'm sure that they'll be able to figure out a way to keep Moore on the roster if they feel like he has good potential ,and doesn't want to risk him getting snagged by some other team when they have felt that Bequette was worth a roster spot 2 years in a row.

Would like to see Worthy the whole game next week I called Kelly to AZ of SF makes sense let's hope they also keep sopo.

Gaffney will go onto the IR list, so that will be another.

Have to wait until final cuts though, which will happen on Sat.8/30. Can't place him on IR yet.

That's what I thought, except players have already been IRed during this round of cuts..

If you dont mind me softballing a question at you: what were you prospectin' about Wifork?

I see that Mayo has been kind enough to act as my Proxy in answering your greatly appreciated Query, and I'll also add that Wilfork's Destiny was the source of an amusing fracas, earlier this Year, when some misguided Soul mentioned that he was "assuming" that Wilfork would be cut.

I'd always considered cutting Wilfork to be a reasonable and defensible Option, should he'ave proven intransigent in Negotiations, and'd written about it, as Mayo was kind enough to Link to. But I found that particular "Fan's" casual prospective dismissal of Wilfork rather offensive, and said so.

When speculation subsequently ensued that Wilfork would indeed be cut, this lad's anger at my having called him on his casual dismissal of Wilfork transmogrified into a apocalyptically profane frenzy of frothing, fuming, snot-bubbling glee...which of course turned out to be a tad premature!!

I'm just praying now, as I once prayed, before, that Mad Bill shocks the Hell out'f me and finally realizes that when you fail to rotate your Bench as the World Champion SeaHawks did, you not only risk catastrophic Injuries like Wilfork's, but you meanwhile significantly compromise the Effectiveness of the Players you're running into the dirt. Don Zimmer killed us in 1978 with that crap, and KC Jones probably cost us a couple of Championships by grinding The Big 3 into the Parquette despite our once having the best and deepest Bench in the NBA...but I would've expected better thinking from Mad Bill.

Take Buckner out...put in Stapleton...you did it every single game of the season, John....please don't just sit there like Lot's wife, frozen solid like a block of salt...say something...

WHY?????????????????????????????

Wilfork's Destiny, is, by the way, the name of Bianca's plus-size girl band.

I just know that in order to not risk him (Gaffney) like Carolina did, we'll have to wait until the final round of cuts this coming Saturday to move him straight to IR without risk of waivers.

If there were some other players placed on IR prior to final cutdowns, I'm pretty sure they were exposed to waivers first, before they resorted to IR. Maybe @Miguel could weigh in when he gets a chance?

It is my understanding as well that any player placed on IR prior to final cut downs had to have been exposed to waivers. Rules explained here:
