Jimmy G set to play entire game Thursday

As someone on Twitter noted, though:

Isn't it, well, highly unusual that the Patriots announced this, and are OK with Garoppolo talking about it, this far ahead of time?

Obviously, Belichick has his reasons. The question is, what those reasons are.

I believe this development shows mallet is more likely the #2 then the opposite...now if jimmy has an out of this world game, diff story

In 2013, Mallett played the first half in the pre-season finale against the NY Giants, and Tebow played the entire second half.

This is interesting. If Mallett were the clear #2, why not give him another 30 snaps in live action to work on game situations like last year when the choice was obvious?

I think this is a sign that Mallett is gone, maybe as early as tomorrow to give him a shot at hooking on with the Rams or somewhere else.

And I hope these are the last snaps I have to watch JG or Mallett take, in a Patriots uniform, for the rest of this year.
I don't, I'm hoping we are destoying teams and Garopollo or Mallet come in to mop up.

yes - -that's why I was so skeptical when the reports first came out. Then I saw that BB had confirmed it ... very unusual.

History says Garoppolo is the backup. It's either been the backup or Brady who started the 4th preseason game.

2013- Mallett started
2012- Mallett started
2011- Brady started
2010- Brady started
2009- Hoyer started and played the whole game
2008- Cassell started
2007- Cassell started
2006- Cassell started and played the whole game
2005- Flutie started
2004- Davey started and played the whole game
2003- Brady started
2002- Brady started
2001- Brady started and played the whole game

My guess is Mallett is officially on the trade block and BB is making calls, I hope.

Really doubt this will happen because Texans are #1 in waiver claims.

My feeling is that if we can't trade Mallett, they will keep him for one more year and either try to trade him again or let him walk and get a comp pick out of it.

If we let him walk now, we get nothing out of it and there's a good chance he ends up in Houston.

I see two things in this situation:

1 - BB doesn't want to burn the tape of Mallet's 2014 pre-season, for selling reasons, because he didn't light up in this pre-season but also didn't do horrific things. So he has some good tape and could be in risk if he plays and throw 2 stupid picks.

2 - He wants to see what he really has in Jimmy G to make the final call.

What??

They lose any chance to trade him after the training deadline as he is a FA. As for the comp pick, they maybe would get a 7th round pick for him. Not sure if BB right now wants a potential 2015 7th round pick more than he does an extra RB, DL, DB, or LB

The #Patriots won’t deal Ryan Mallett until they feel comfortable in Jimmy Garoppolo as a backup. Thursday will tell a lot for them.

That makes sense. I think they want to deal him if they can but i still think they keep 3 if no one offers them a good enough deal, and i do think it will take a 3rd to get him.

Have a fair degree of skepticism here, he might start, but will he be QB for the whole game???

I am not sure of that... if Mallett was "trade bait' wouldn't you want to showcase him??

Always viewed Garapollo as the first chance to find Brady's replacement... find it interesting that they did it on the first try.

Isn't Curran the same reporter who said that Mallett to the Texans was a done deal right before the draft?

On PFT Live, @tomecurran says he thinks Patriots QB Ryan Mallett will be cut if he's not traded.

At this point I believe you put Mallet on a game there's more chances to ruin his tape than showcase anything. Would showcase only his bads.

I believe Mallet could be a good QB in the right offense, with good playing time. Here in NE unfortunately he did show many times he's so so.

Why would we care if he ends up in Houston?

Jimmy G. just put last nail in for Mallett. Finalized what we all knew was inevitable.

Why? Dont you want us to be winning at least a few games by such an outrageous amount that we twist the knife in our opponent by playing our backup qb?

;)

EDIT:
With all due respect, I'd love to see this team playing so well that Garoppolo gets to play mop-up duty in every Q4. :D

I responded without reading to the end of the thread. Agreed!

If BB runs up the score, he'll keep Brady in to do it, I believe. And if I'm not watching either of the other two, it means Brady stayed healthy doing it.

@JumboHart: The @giants will reportedly play starters for 15-18 snaps on Thursday night against the #Patriots Interesting test for those Pats that play

most likely prepping jim g , for an in season trade possibility of mallet .

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick detailed his thinking for giving rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo the start in the preseason finale Thursday against the New York Giants.

i

"It's just an experience that he needs to go through -- to feel like he’s going to start the game [and] he’s going to be in the game for every situation -- second down, third down, goal-line, red area, two-minute, whatever it is, he has to be prepared for everything and handle whatever it is that comes up,“ Belichick said Monday during his weekly appearance on sports radio WEEI in Boston.

“This is also a week that he’ll have to deal with the media, deal with the production meeting before the game, I’m sure the fans will have plenty of insults for him when he walks out on the field. It’s an away game. It’s all the things that a quarterback eventually will do as a starting quarterback. Whenever that happens, I have no idea, but whenever it does happen, at least he will have done it once before. I think there is something to be learned here. Ryan [Mallett] has been here three-and-a-half years and Tom’s done it a couple hundred times. This is an opportunity for Jimmy to get that experience and I’m sure he’ll learn from it.”
