8/25: Reiss Predicting Ridley Gets Cut

I don't think the Pats should cut him at all since I don't see a viable replacement option for what he brings on the roster already. Having said that, the guy is still carrying the football low and away far too often. If he continues to do that, fumbles will be an issue with him in 2014 again.

I'd only see cutting Ridley making sense if we traded a low pick for someone like Robert Turbin. We wouldn't have any starting caliber RBs, unless the coaches think Vereen could be an all-purpose RB.

Maroney got BJGE'd, so nothing would surprise me.

How did it resurface this season?
What point are you trying to make with preseason carries? Again, it is meaningless by itself.
The problem resurfaced when Ridley fumbled again. Pre-season carries suggest they ar egiving Gray a serious look.

I had originally thought a Finch/White but decided on Finch due to his ST skill. White , to me, has been unimpressive so far this preseason. If BB sees something in White that fans don't, he'll be on the roster.

White's strength is in the passing game, where he's looked excellent in camp. In preseason games, for some reason, they've mostly been running him up the middle.

During the season I expect to see more 2-RB sets with Vereen and White.

We had a long discussion about Ridley and Blount's fumbling last year. The discussion turned to different types of fumbles, ie guy gets completely lit up and loses the ball, or it is a monsoon or a snowstorm vs the guy tries to make a cutsie move and loses the ball types. While none are good, certainly you have to at least take into account why the fumble occured. If I recall, the general consensus was Ridley's fumbles were mostly avoidable and a matter of poor ball control rather than amazing defensive plays or environmental factors.

Much like his fumble in the second game of preseason.

Jonas Gray is not making the decision at RB easy he would be one of those Tough cuts. I think he just played himself on to the end of the roster. I think BB loves RB's in the Jonas Gray Mold he's built similar to to Ridley and Bolden. Gray looks like a Tough down hill runner who doesn't put the ball on the floor. Gray excells in short yardage situations in College he plays faster than his times speed. From what we have seen so far I don't think James White is guranteed a roster spot. I think Gray has outplayed him for the rights to be on the Final roster. I would risk James White making the PS.

The other interesting comment someone made above was versatility. Could be that BB has decided that a power runner who has mediocre hands is less important that a runner who is almost as good, but can catch the ball out of the backfield. It certainly gives the defenses one more thing to worry about.

Well, he didn't fumble.
Again, preseason carries are meaningless unless you put it into context of how many carries players who make the team, start, and get cut traditionally have.
You are reaching for meaning by citing something that is probably irrelevant.

Ridely fumbled vs the Eagles.

Ridley does not have to sign with the new team making the trade null and void.
That is simply not correct.
He can refuse to report, and sit out of the NFL if he chooses to, but there is nothing to sign.

Ridley is signed this year. He can hold out if he wants, but doing so in a contract year isn't going to help him when he hits free agency. You don't think a team would give up a 5th or 6th rounder for a year of a potential 1200 yard back?

No he didn't. If it had been recovered by the Eagles it would have been subject to review and anyone with eyes would know it would be overturned.
Statisticians don't make calls on the field.

After reading Reiss' article again, it seems that Reiss is expecting a surprise roster cut (apparently from listening to him last night on Sports Final, he expected Kelly to get cut) and he is just taking a flyer. I don't know if he truly believes Ridley to get cut, but if Belichick has a shocker cut he sees Ridley as a prime candidate.

Yes, if the 53 cutdown date was not days away.

The Pats have to make a decision to let Ridely go or a player they think holds high promise for the future.

Ridely fumbled vs the Eagles.

He was down and someone ripped the balls out of his hands. It wasn't ruled a fumble (pretty obviously) and him losing the ball there had nothing to do with his old issues of running with the ball swinging around.
