Schefter reporting Kelly, Anderson and Smith cut

As everyone I am mostly surprised about Kelly.. all in all he seemed to be worth his money.. the other two make sense, as we dont want to guarantee the full veteran salary if we dont plan 100% with them..

So did Zach Moore make the team today? Reiss noted he looked good Friday.

Smith and Anderson aren't huge surprises. Neither did much this preseason. Kelly is a shock to me. I thought he would start .

It must be good news that Siliga and Chris Jones and their injuries. Wouldn't be surprised if Kelly is back.
Someone will claim Kelly, maybe even the Jets.

The Kelly cut is a little surprising. Thought he looked decent so far this preseason.
maybe they plan on grabbing one of the DT that have been cut by another team. I dont think Anderson is a surprise, he really had not played very well this preseason.

Maybe Kelly didn't want to take another pay cut? Either way, he was worth his small contract.
Why in the world would we want Branch ? He sucks.

Damn I hate it Kelly got cut. I hope he comes back somehow

Kelly restructured his contract in March, so he was not eligible for another extension/restructure; that can only be done once a year. The only was to cut his pay would be to release him, and then after he clears waivers sign him to a new contract.

Veterans like Kelly don't go through waivers before the trade deadline. Kelly can immediately sign any contract with any team.

I'm not surprised by Andersson or Smith. Both looked like JAGs at best, and then we might as well go with young JAGs who might become more than JAGs.

Kelly is a real surprise though. He was by far our best interior DL last year before his injury. As others have pointed out it probably shows that Siliga and Jones aren't too far out.

I am not hugely surprised, honestly. We have a crapload of young guns at the DL. Easley, Chris and Chandler Jones, Vellano, Siliga and now Worthy. Kelly was old, albeit his ok performances this offseason. Still, I firmly believe he is on the Quick Dial for BB to call, if necessary.

Anderson is a disappointment, i honestly expected a greater player. He was slow, had bad angles. Smith was a "hopeful" signing from the beginning. Had he had something in the tank, he'd be around. Guess it's empty...

RE: Kelly

Tie goes to the younger players.

Silinga, Jones, and Verrano all got significant NFL experience last year, have the upside potential of 2nd and 3rd year players, and are dirt cheap.

I don't think it should ever be a surprise when a young player beats out an aging vet. It has to happen, both from a performance standpoint (speed, athleticism) and from a salary cap standpoint. Special teams considerations are important, too. I think it's great that Belichick is giving the thumbs up to these young guys.

The Kelly cut indicates a few things to me
Easley is set to go
Siliga won't be going on IR
Bill has liked what he's seen in Worthy so far but still no guarantee he makes it past the next round. But Worthy is 24, cheaper and they have him right now through '15. Whereas Kelly is 33 and a FA after this season.

Will Smith cut means Zach Moore & Darius Fleming made the 53-man

Anderson cut means Beauharnais is the #4 MLB behind Mayo, Collins, and Hightower

Bill has liked what he's seen in Worthy so far and thinks he offers as much or more than Kelly at tad bit cheaper price and is signed through 2015 and wants to see more in the Giants game although still no guarantee he makes it past the next round.

This is going to be a young front 7. Other than Wilfork and Ninkovich, everyone likely to stick is under 30, pending pickups off of the cutdown lists:

- DE: Chandler Jones, Michael Buchanan, Zach Moore
- DT: Dominique Easley, Sealver Siliga, Chris Jones, Jerel Worthy, Joe Vellano
- LB: Jerod Mayo, Dont'a Hightower, Jamie Collins, probably Darius Fleming and Steve Beauharnais

Maybe Kelly would take a pay cut and in order to do that was cut him and resign him? I thought Kelly was a lock

I thought Kelly would make the team, he certainly didn't look bad in preseason, guess the Pats are going young on the line.

Going Young, hopefully they prove themselves to be worthy of the trust.

As a not so minor point, the twelve-month rule states:

The contract of a Veteran Player may not be renegotiated to increase the Salary to be paid to the player during the original terms of the contract for a period of twelve months after the player's most recent contract renegotiation. The first renegotiation of a Veteran Player Contract, however, may take place at any time.

Still not sure how I feel about two athletic freak projects being our backups to Jones/Ninko. I wish there was someone NFL ready behind them.

Well at this point it was them or Smith. I can see why the patriots chose them.
