Jason Cole: Pats and Revis working on Extension

Belichick has never shunned players with perceived attitude problems if he believes there is value and the player can improve the team.

I think you certainly make a valid point, but I think it all depends on the specific circumstances of the individual just as well.

For an outsider + a major, top of the market payday, I think we'd be a bit more careful.

For a short term deal later on his career, things could be much different--as you've stated with past players.

I wouldn't be opposed to seeing another top round (1-2) pick in the draft again at the position of DL. I think they should continue planning for the future now.

Darrelle Revis, Pats haven't begun negotiations yet, but here's how it might look when they do | Boston Herald

If the Patriots gave him a $12 million signing bonus in a three-year, $45 million contract, a contract guru formulated a deal that would call for cap hits of $8 million in 2015, $22.5 million in 2016 and $14.5 million in 2017.

Jeff Howe's contract guru or Jeff Howe should have included the $5 million prorated signing bonus in his 2015 cap number making it $13 million.

Yeah, I noticed he missed that too, but doesn't the $5 million get spread out over the life of the contract and not just hit in 2015? I am no cap expert. So I will defer to you.

Revis received a 10 million signing bonus from the Patriots in March. That 10 million was spread over the life of that contract - 5 million this year, 5 million in 2015.

I am on record as opining that the Amendola contract is the worst ever by the Patriots.

Why is that? If he fills Welker's shoes adequately for the rest of his deal then he's well worth it.

I really think Patriot fans are going to love Amendola when this season is over.

I'll go with paying Chad Johnson over 6 million for his services.

Thought at the time that the Patriots overpaid for him. Do not like the $2 million salary guarantee that he got at the start of the 2014 League Year. If Larry Fitzgerald, a far superior player who had tremendous leverage in his contract negotiations, can agree to salary de-escalators in his deal (Fitzgerald could lose up to 8 million if he does not have at least 70 receptions), why not Amendola? Without salary de-escalators Amendola's contract is set up for him to get released as soon as 2015. Think that it was a bad deal for Amendola. How could he ever prove to be a bargain that Welker was?

Hear that? That's the sound of the gods preparing to wage war. Another Amendola debate is on the horizon.

In all seriousness, I'd say we should simply hope for the best with Amendola. If it doesn't work out after this year, we move on from him. If it does, all the better. I'm cautiously optimistic.

In regards to the Revis and McCourty situation shmnessy, ChrisR223, and Rob0729 have mentioned the contract that Mankins has. Obviously it's a controversial one, but I'm curious as to what they have planned for the O-line if he leaves after this year.

I disagree but that's a fair enough argument, however I never said he would be as good a bargain as WElker was, no one could be, they got HOF production for about 2-3 million a year before the tag, and even with that got an incredible deal. What I said was that if Amendola performs at a high level for the rest of his deal then he will be well worth what they gave him. If he doesn't then you are right and it would have been a bad deal, but if he gives them 85% of what Welker did it will be a good deal imo.

I don't see this turning into any kind of debate, everything with Amendola will initially come dow to his play this season, but even if he has a great season I think there will still be many who will want that to be repeated to really believe in him. I'm an Amendola fan and think he is going to deliver big time for them this season but he has to prove that on the field or he's looking at pay cuts.

Not much to debate, he either delivers or he doesn't.

would love to see Revis here longterm, but gonna take the report with a grain of salt. Let's make it happen Bob and BB!

With the increasing cap, I've seen enough of what the Revis Island rollover effect is going to be to make a stupid comment: give Revis 14-16 million per on a 3-5 year deal Bill.

Preseason or not, the D is playing with swag and attitude. That's been missing since the Super Bowl winning years.

Why is that a stupid comment? Extending him to a long term elite contract is a no-brainer.

How many elite years do some of you think he has left?

Who cares?

Around here, some people will consider it a stupid comment because they expect all top tier talent to take a "hometown discount". Not going to name names, but I'm sure you've seen it.

Anyway, yeah. I agree. Do what it takes to lock him up. The dude is going to finish his career as one of the best CB's to ever play the game. Keep that blue and silver jersey on his back.

I'm telling you guys, Revis is worth the price of admission. You have to watch this guy live, because on TV you can't see his dominance.
