Ridley trade value?

Before we start calling BB names, we should recall that we are not seeing what players do every day in practice. Belichick's decisions are obviously based on more than game stats or what we are able to see on game day. Having said that, BB was well aware of Ridley's ball security issue when he let Blount walk, so I think the plan is for Ridley to see a lot of carries this season. He has to uphold his end of the bargain too course.

Not sure what practice has to do with it. Whenever I wonder/disagree why so and so is starting, or why so and so is barely getting any snaps I see the practice philosophy, but it doesn't apply here IMO. Ridley gets regular carries when he is protecting the ball in real game action. Then everytime he fumbles he's immediately glued to the bench. I don't agree with that approach regardless of what's happening in practice. If he's doing something wrong in practice someone would probably be starting over him to begin with [which I'd be hard pressed to disagree on].

The issue of assessing his ball security takes into account his performance in practice. Corrective measures once you decide he has a problem is a separate matter. There appear to be quite a few folks here who disagree with BB's "immediate consequences" approach.

I know there are a lot of fans
Here who will defend Ridley
To the end.

The same bunch defended Maroney & tried to defend the
Patriots drafting Ron Brace.

Ridley in my eyes is still the best running back on the Patriots but they will not resign him.

There is no doubt that Belichick does not trust Ridley to hold onto the ball when it counts

Some people are saying that Ridley may be cut, but I don't
See that happening.

I expect the Pats to hold onto
Ridley until another team loses there top back to injury.

I could see the Pats getting a
3rd or 4th round pick to a team like Dallas (example),
If Murray got hurt again.

Last year there was talk through the media of the Patriots trading Ridley to Indy for Trent Richardson. They said that a fresh start may benefit both players.

Do we hold onto him or do
We trade him when the right
Situation opens up?

If we trade him, what do you
Think we get for him????

I do not usually knock threads straight up, I think everyone has the right to their opinion, but honestly this thread is really bad. Ridley let the ball get out of his grasp after his knee was down, should it have happen, no but we are not going to trade him away over it. If Ridley had seen 290 carries like he did in 2012 last season he would have ran for around 1260 yards and 12 touchdowns again, you know in the Belichick era the only player who ever had a season like that was Corey Dillon and it was 1 season in 2004, Dillon also fumbled 5 times that season. In the history of the Patriots only Dillon in 2004 (5 fumbles that year), Curtis Martin in 1995 (5 fumbles that year), Jim Nance in 1966 (7 fumbles that season) have rushed for more yards than Ridley did in 2012 in one season.

I still don't get why people are so crazy about Bolden. He's done some good things for us in a pinch like the Broncos regular season game last year but he's nothing special. Vereen and Ridley need to fix their butterfinger issuses. Vereen runs such crisp routes but damn it he drops some big gainers.

I finally had to check into this thread, because this has the feel of something that Belichick might do, but when I look at the details of it, I can't see it happening. We need a back to get the tough yards and a backup. Ridley and Bolden are those guys, much like Vereen and White are the passing back and his backup.

However, the main thing working in Ridley's favor is that he has corrected the fundamental problem and is carrying the ball high and tight this year. If that continues, he won't be let go, because he'll be one of the top backs in the league.

The best recent comparison that I can think of is when the Patriots traded Laurence Maroney in 2010, in exchange for Denver's fourth round draft pick. In both instances the running backs were in the final year of their contract. There are however two circumstances related to the Maroney trade that should be noted.

First, Denver was in a very difficult situation at that time. Knowshon Moreno, Correll Buckhalter and Andre Brown were all still recuperating from training camp injuries for the Broncos, and LenDale White had been placed on IR. Secondly, Maroney had plummeted down the depth chart behind Fred Taylor, Sammy Morris and BenJarvus Green-Ellis, with Kevin Faulk as the third down back.

While other teams value Ridley more than they did Maroney at that time, by the same token Ridley is of much more value to the 2014 Patriots than Maroney was to the 2010 Pats. Regardless of whatever fumbling issues Ridley may or may not have, he is more valuable on the current roster than whatever the Patriots could reasonably expect to receive in return for him.

Kevin Faulk had bad fumble problems early in his career and shook it.

My one ask for Ridley is to be more situationally aware. Tight game, running out the clock = two hands and go down when you're wrapped. Fighting for a third down yardage = go ahead and lean and lunge a little more.

as a side note, i think we would be able to get a 2nd rd pick or ridley with relative ease, if thats the route the team wanted to follow
