Josh Boyce now offically PS eligible

This could be huge in helping to keep him as a developmental prospect. What "new rules" are you speaking of? (Edit: nevermind, they are in line with the new expansion for the PS rules) I was under the impression that he was active too many times last season, and I didn't see him on any recent lists from Miguel.

As you said, it'll come down to him clearing waivers, so that's probably 50/50. He didn't show much last year at all, and was lucky to even see the field had it not been for the injury situation at WR. While I'm doubtful that he could succeed in our specific system, I still think he may compete in others if/when he gets the chance. Possibly a more simplistic kind of system...

Mmmm, Interesting. It may be the only way he avoids being a cut.

Highly doubt he clears waivers. Carolina would probably try to get back at us by grabbing him.

Also - is it possible if Boyce were to tweak an ankle (or get some type of minor injury) we just stash him on IR?

With the new rules he is eligible for the PS. Question is would he clear waivers? I lean towards no.
In my opinion it is very unlikely that Boyce would clear waivers and make it onto the practice squad. The Browns or another WR needy team would likely put a claim in. On a side note if Boyce is eligible I would have to assume that Jake Bequette is as also eligible now.

The PS is a good place for Boyce. It would give him another year to try to develop without taking up a roster spot.

If another team really wants Josh Boyce on their 53, so be it.

Specifically, the rule change is this:

Each club will be permitted to sign a maximum of two Practice Squad players who have earned no more than two accrued seasons of free agency credit.

In other words, the fact that Boyce played nine games last year is irrelevant; the Patriots can still sign him (and one other such player) to the PS.

Rats, Jags & Panthers would all likely put in a waiver claim for him.

He'd never make it to the practice squad.

As for a minor injury that lands him on IR, I would think that he would request an injury settlement and go to a team that wants him, so he can get some snaps and work on developing a career. His salary is only a little over the minimum. If he goes to a team that isn't looking for a rent-a-player, it's a better situation than one that would waive or "stash" him  on IR.

With the new rules, I imagine there will be a lot of teams asking this sort of question about several players.

The Jets would pick him up, Rex would hold a press conference saying that Boyce is the next Jerry Rice and hype him up, then we would never hear from him again, as Rex would cut him on the same day he claims Brandon Bolden, aka, the next Terrell Davis.

Most of the newly eligible will be on the roster, but an added complexity to everyone's roster decisions. (A player has to be released prior to being added to the PS so it is not an alternative to "being cut"). I think Boyce is worse than 50:50 to clear waivers, but we fans tend to think more of our players than the league seems to. THe problem with IR is he wouldn't get the reps he needs to improve.

Based on their recent transaction history, Worthy and Maneri would seem to have good chances of clearing waivers if cut.

Worthy may be debatable. He's a former 2nd round pick who is now healthy and practicing. I could envision other teams having some possible interest.

Maneri is another story, in my opinion.

What has he ever done to make people think he wouldn't clear waivers? I haven't seen him do much of anything to warrant him making the 53 of the Patriots or any other team.

He ran a 4.3 40. There are plenty of teams that would take a flyer on a WR/KR who is that fast. Most teams don't have 5 capable WRs.

4th round pick last year injured in his first year but came back to assume KR duties and made a couple of plays showing his speed and agility. Too early to say he won't develop so still some upside. The same reasons you would put him on the PS.

You bring up a very good point. While it's Boyce's raw speed and athleticism that gets everyone here excited, he was clearly in a much different place last year when compared to the other 2 rookies in Thompkins and Dobson. Josh Boyce did absolutely nothing in practice situations to justify getting more looks, and the rare opportunities that he did get, he blew.

He completely lost Brady's trust, and was inactive from there on out until the injury situation decimated our WR corps so badly that we had no other options.Once inserted into the lineup he did have a couple of games with some moderate productivity--although that is likely due to the fact that there were no other real options. His major contribution to the NEP thus far has been his pass interference penalty drawn in the CLE game that allowed us to come back.

This year, while I think he's definitely improved, I also don't think he's done enough to assume that every other NFL team in the league is foaming at the mouth in the hopes that they can grab him off the waiver wire. Like someone else said, if he's able to make it to the PS and continue to be a developmental prospect, all the better. If not, oh well. I am apprehensive of him making it here, but it's certainly possible that he can make it in a more simplistic system that can help to take advantage of his raw talent.

I don't know why GMs have such trouble with this. There's absolutely no need to waive anybody, ever.

Click on the Player you want to trade or get rid of.

Click on the Team at the top of the list and ask for a 7th round pick in trade.

Now looks at that Team's interest bar, if its red, then just move on to the next team.

Once you find a team with an interest level that is yellow or green then you've found a team that will trade you for that player you were about to put on waivers.

Try seeing if that Team with green interest will give you a 6th round pick instead.

Profit.
