So.. are we really sticking with what we have at TE?

Tim Wright---was he the guy who really came on out of nowhere last year?
I believe so. Recorded 54 catches for 571 yards and scored 5 TD's..

Not bad for an undrafted rookie TE.

6'4" as well. If Tampa Bay ends up using him as their slot/WR3 like they claim they are considering, they will have some enormous red zone targets with VJax, Evans, ASJ, and Wright.

EDIT: Nevermind, I looked it up. He is the guy I was thinking of. Apparently, the Bucs are considering the use of him at the WR3 spot.
Haven't heard that, but it'd make sense considering he was initially a WR coming out.

Nothing at all. I'm not even sure Gallon will make the Practice Squad.

What has any one else's 7th rounder done that cause you to think that they were better in belichick's eyes than Hooman and Williams?

Yes, the team had lots of chances to draft players. I thought that you were discussing players with a reasonable shot at making the team.
All I read is complaints about the tight end position like every team in the NFL has tremendous depth at the position except the New England Patriots.

Gronkowski
Hoomanawanui
Williams
Maneri
Jones

It is what it is.

Matt Mulligan is no longer a New England Patriot. Asa Watson is no longer a New England Patriot. Ben Hartsock is no longer a New England Patriot.

How many other tight ends have been signed in the last two years?

Daniel Fells
Bo Scaife
Jake Ballard
Visanthe Shiancoe
Kellen Winslow Jr
Brad Herman
Alex Silvestro
Zach Dudfeld

Look most of the posts in this thread were not complaining, *****ing, moaning. Rather just citing concerns about the depth, that the guys like WIlliams/Maneri/Jones currently on the roster won't be good enough for a roster spot. No one is saying it's the worst depth in the league, just that it could be alot better than it is right now and could be upgraded if someone talented gets cut in the next few weeks.

But you feel as though that's a problem citing that concern, like it's bad to point out a depth weakness and look at options to somehow upgrade it, even though there are very few. You also act as if all the rosters are already finalized, and that everything is set in stone and won't change.

Really there hasn't been any *****ing and moaning in this thread except from you.

BB take Gonzalez to Ground Round tell'm your a Patriot now its final! Tell'm he will have a legit chance at his Superbowl. This has nothin to do with 2 TE Offense just some real insurance for Gronk.

Ground Round---where dreams are born and deals are made.

If we actually were lucky enough to sign Tony Gonzelez, it would be MUCH more about effectively utilizing the 2 TE sets again, as opposed to just having adequate depth. We could go right back to taking advantage of many defensive mismatches again, whether it be run or pass. I think that's a fantastical pipe-dream, though.

Haven't heard that, but it'd make sense considering he was initially a WR coming out.

I think I saw it on the rotoworld website, when you look under each specific player.

Sometimes my man cave has the Ground Round feel to it. :D

The New England Patriots are not going back to the two tight end offense. Live with it.

The Pats change up their offense every season. Sometimes its obvious and sometimes subtle.

It appears to me that NE has moved to a WR based passing game like GB and the NYG a few seasons ago. Reports are that LaFell has looked good and Tyms has opened some eyes. Its wise because depending on Gronk has not worked out.

So maybe were looking at a final WR group after everyone's healthy and back from suspension of:

Andelman
Almendola
Lafell
Thompkins
Dobson
Tyms

I think its pretty obvious that we'll sign a TE from the waiver wire during final cutdowns, or simply go with 2. Anyone have an inside track on what type of talent may or may not be available after final cuts?

I don't think we'll stay with what we have (Gronk & Hooman; Williams is on the Bubble, IMO).

After the beginning of the season, we could sign Keller or even Finley, considering all medical checks out, without any guaranteed salary(IIRC)

I think/hope the team is just waiting until all of the cuts are done with to see if they can make any improvements over Hooman and the rest of the trash at the position (sans Gronk). If Gronk goes down, the Pats have some bodies for the position and that's about it.

outside of 3 or 4 teams you just described the rest of the NFL, except those other teams don't even have the starting baseline of gronk

And that's relevant to what I said, how? Gronk has ended the last three seasons with hampering or season ending injuries. There is zero question that he's the best in the game when he's healthy. You cannot count on him to be healthy, though. That's an unfortunate truth. So the depth behind him is very disturbing when you take that into account.

It's relevant because people(including you) are freaking out over our TE depth when it is comparable to EVERY single team in the league. BB should have done this, BB should have done That, BB should send mallet and a first round pick to this team for this guy to be a backup. If every single team is passing on the tight ends available, then

There are, outside of gronk, maybe 4 tight ends worth trying to get and none of them are going to be available.

TE is just not a glamor position right now, the patriots made it awesome, a murderer ruined it, and now that we've been spoiled by what COULD have been everyone is trying to catch lightning in a bottle again.

Move past it folks, we might sign someone, but they are not going to contribute in any major way. if they could, they would already be on a roster.

Tampa Bay would be a good example.

Timothy Wright.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
Brandon Myers.

Decent chance they don't keep all three of those TE's. I feel as though Myers/Wright could be fighting for a spot. Either one of Myers/Wright would intrigue me.

Running through the AFC:

Miami
Miami Dolphins' projected roster - ESPN
ESPN's projected roster has Charles Clay, Dion Sims, and Brett Brackett making the team. Dartmouth MA's Arthur Lynch and Michael Egnew projected as cuts.

Pittsburgh will likely release Rob Blanchflower and David Paulson.
Houston will likely release Zach Potter and/or Anthony Denham.
Titans will likely release Chase Coffman.

There will be plenty of bodies released. Whether there are any upgrades over DJ Williams remains to be seen.

The point of building a Super Bowl winning team is not to be comparable with every team in the league. The point of building a Super Bowl winning team is to have quality depth in every area possible, which includes TE. And, by the way, after Gronk, the Pats have probably the worst corps at that position in the league. Again, it's a JAG and a roster of other guys that suck. If they go into the season with that, pray that Gronk doesn't get injured. Not only will the defense not have to respect the TE at all, but it also severely hampers our red zone efficiency, as we saw in 2012 and 2013. You can go ahead and be fine with being comparable with every other team in the league at that position. I'll go ahead and wish more better quality depth.

Good post Kontra anybody who is CONFIDENT that both Gronk and Amendola are definites to remain healthy based and past history....I have a bridge to sell you.;)

Garbage in, garbage out, If anything that list says it's time to invest a little in the position other than broken down vets and undrafted nobody's . Or they could just go with the same plan again and hope that it somehow works out differently this time if/when Gronk goes down.
