Well, after we cut both of our UDFA's in Jones and Watson last week. We obviously don't seem to have any prospect on the roster who appears to be capable of being anywhere near a serviceable receiving TE. As of now we have-

Gronk
Hooman
Maneri
Williams
Develin (as a move type)

With Gronk I'm with everyone else on the board in hoping that Gronk will shake off the injury bug this year, but it just can't be denied that he can't be trusted to stay healthy until he proves to do so. Now, I think we've seen enough of the Hooman the last two years to know he is not much of a receiving target.. at all. (Despite having that sweet catch in Miami last year.)

Maneri just sucks, he really does.

As for Williams, see Maneri. While size wise he looks like he has the form of a receiving TE, it's just not all there for him.

Now I understand the last few weeks it appears Bill has emphasized the move/blocking TE position with signing Harstock and Maneri recently, and also by moving some of the O-lineman into TE positions on occasion during the games. Develin actually look like a pretty intruiging prospect for this role. But certainly it has to be put into consideration that we still need an insurance TE who's capable of being a receiver, no??

I know that Finley, with his settlement and money he's asking for and all, is long out of the question. But I do wonder if Keller is still an insurance option at this point for the team. I understand he was in contact with the team a month back, it could be interesting if he ends up getting signed around the start of the season in case Gronk isn't quite ready to go yet.

Probably.

This is going to be a WR and RB based offense when Gronk is not on the field.

We really don't have that many options..so we are stuck with it for the time being.

Like stated in my post though, is Keller completely out of the question now? It'd kinda remind me of when we brought in Winslow for a few games back in the early part of the 2012 season.

Yes the fact that we didn't draft one told me Bill wasn't the least bit interested in finding another receiving tight end. I think the team is content with just having blocking tight ends and focusing on the receivers.

Disagree completely,I don't think he's satisfied with their situation at TE at all but had other priorities for their draft and the free agent market was weak at the position. Gronk is a major part of this offense and they would love to have a back-up option available to play his role if he goes down. I do think Develin and Vereen will run some of the routes that Hernandez used to run from the move TE, and Lafell may see some time in the slot as well but I still think he's waiting for Keller to be healthy before making a move for him. If not a trade or a released TE are other opportunities. It sucks the position is so unsettled but ultimately Gronk's health will be the key at the position and not the back-ups.

Jones is back, FWIW.

Given the complete plenitude of suck at TE in the league in general, if Dustin Keller was capable of playing football he would be signed. Can I please not have to see this again? Maybe, at some point, he will be healthy. He isn't now and trying to plan on him at some point being healthy and signed is simple wish-casting.

If you want a ridiculous TE fantasy borrow mine. Tony Gon comes out of retirement to pair with Gronk.

There are 8-9 good pass catching TEs that's it in the league. That's why the 2-TE set is hard to run and why we couldn't just plug and play when Aaron was gone. It is what it is.

I think if Keller showed any signs he was healthy he would be a Patriot

Use of Devlin at TE/FB along with Hooman and Gronk should work. Gives another player a shot at making the roster.

I just think that with the number of large, and capable, receivers that we have a second tight end isn't worth it if it isn't for very low money. Some obsess over the 2 TE offense, it was a slump that we was able to do that, and I think Bill agrees on that and that's why he isn't chasing over it like many fans wants him to do. It's just to hard to find good receiving tight ends. Right now we have the personel to run a lot of 11 personel and I think that we will do that. Probably 4 WR 1TE stuff too. You do what your roster allows you to do, and right now(after this FA and Draft which wasn't hot in TEs) that isn't 2 TE passing offense.

I'm just happy that we didn't reach for a tight end in the draft just to be able to run 2 TE offense again.

For the purposes of the 2014 offense, we should not be considering Hernandez '10-'12 as a TE but as a WR.
Hernandez did not 'back up' Gronk. If Gronk were injured someone else (about the quality of Hooman or some other JAG) would take his place. Hernandez played Hernandez position.
When Hernandez was out, we would run much more 3 WR sets. When Gronk was out we inserted the backup TE.
The depth situation we have today at TE is really no different than it was those years (providing Hooman gets healthy) and the role is a small one. What some people were calling TE depth (The Murderer) is actually call starting WR today.

I'm not sure we have a role for him. Personally there is no way in the world I would take a WR away from Tom Brady to put Keller on the field, and his blocking is horrendous, so his only use may be on passing downs if Gronk can't play.

Believe me I'm in no way in support for the return of the 2 TE system. I felt as though it restricted us in many ways. While it may have worked for us at the time it's not something you can just force into running in a system.

Our definition of "good" may be different. If by good you mean a guy who can put up a fair, 7-800 yards, 8+ TD's, then yeah good luck finding it. I was just referring to a guy who could play a nice role in the receiving game during times when Gronk is unable to play, and not be practically irrelevant in those situations. (i.e. Hooman)

I think Hernandez role has been split up between WR's, RB's and TE. I see it more as LaFell taking some of the routes, Vereen those out of the backfield, and Develin as an H-Back taking some of that role.
