Why Did Jordan Devey Get 91 reps (out of 91)?

Harmon has done nothing in training camp or preseason to prove he has won the S2 spot.

I think he has won. But does it really matter by my analysis?

I said that there were now three, blooded, competent S2s. Among which I thought Harmon had or would emerge as best.

Harmon's jump route INT last night certainly didn't hurt his cause any.

If he shares or someone else wins, so what? There are three fairly competent, adequately sized, players at the position. Pick your favorite.

I would be absolutely shocked if all 3 of Stork, Fleming & Halapio were waived on cut-down day.
Halapio yes, but Stork and/or Fleming? I just don't see it, not yet.
OTOH, I wouldn't be surprised if Bill were to claim an OLman (or 2) the same day.

I implicitly included Anderson as a starter cover LB, but didn't expressly say it. Thanks for the clarification to which I wholeheartedly agree. We have four (with Ninko an emergency fifth),but no more.
Anderson did not even play the second preseason game.

As for Safety, I think that is Last season's problem, which will become increasingly clear this season.

Harmon has won the S2 job.
Harmon has won nothing.

Arrington/Ryan have won the McCourty backup job.
Based upon what?

Wilson seems to have matured, and can play. He has ideal size and speed for the position.
Wilson has proven nothing.

Chung may not be the premium Safety originally expected, but despite Fandom hyperbole, is an above average to good reserve. All are fully sized for the job unlike Sanders and Gregory before them.
Patrick Chung sucks in pass coverage.

So we have starters and pretty good depth at both positions; and even more talent can be drawn from the very good CB pool if needed.
The New England Patriots have one starter inked at the safety position, the other remains an open competition.

I don't see the hype with Barker, Cave, Halapio.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Stork on the PUP list to start the season, or even on IR. It'd give him time to learn the whole system and keep him from being claimed off of waivers.

Having said that, I see him making the 53, sans any regression on his medical issues.

Stork is not eligible for the PUP. IR is the only option if he's not ready to play when the season begins. One thing we need to remember when speculating who makes it through to the cut to 53 is that vested veterans (4 years plus)who are on the roster for game 1 have their salary guaranteed for the whole season. I could see this hurting the chances of vets such as Wendell, Will Smith, James Anderson & Pat Chung making it through to the cuts to 53.

Good point.

I would not shed a tear if all four were cut.

Okay, here are the rookies a single unidentified team claimed off of waivers during cutdowns last year:

DT Gilbert Pena (UDFA)
LB Ja'Gared Davis (UDFA)
C Braxston Cave (UDFA)
G Chris Barker (UDFA)
DT A.J. Francis (UDFA)
DT Chris Jones (6th rounder, awarded to Tampa)
CB Marcus Cooper (7th rounder, awarded to Kansas City)

Here is a non-exhaustive list of rookies claimed off of waivers last year at cutdowns by other teams:

WR Russell Shepard (UDFA)
DE David Bass (7th rounder)
TE MarQueis Gray (UDFA)
LB Brandon Magee (UDFA)
OL Keavon Milton (UDFA)
RB Dennis Johnson (UDFA)
TE Jack Doyle (UDFA)
C Patrick Lewis (UDFA)
LB Eric Martin (UDFA)
LB Paul Hazel (UDFA)
CB Jumal Rolle (UDFA)

So conversely I would be greatly surprised if either (a) only four rookies in the league were claimed off of waivers this year, or (b) 4th rounders like Stork and Fleming passed through the wire unmolested.

One would think the Jets alone would submit multiple claims for those two players, just to make them honorary captains.

I could quibble over some of the names (Pena wasnt at cutdown, Jones was after week 1, and others went to the ps) but my opinion on this seems to be outdated, as it is now apparently more common for waiver claims to be made at cutdown than it was a few years ago (last time I researched).

In any event, I would still not keep a player based upon whether he would get claimed on waivers.
This may however, change my mind on keeping 8 OL and Maneri vs 9 OL and 2 TEs.
I would not keep Stork though if he does not get on the field before cutdown.

I'll give you Pena, he was claimed just before Preseason Game 4, but Jones was in fact claimed by the Pats during cutdowns, they just weren't awarded him, same as Marcus Cooper. When the Bucs cut him a week later, the Pats put the winning claim in on him at that time.

Harmon didn't really jump anything. It was a gift pick Sanchez pretty much threw right at him.

Yeah, I forgot that he started training camp, then got a leg injury. For whatever reason I was thinking he hadn't started practicing yet so was eligible for PUP. So many players, so many situations, you know?

I like Harmon and all that, but I've never seen a guy get as many gift wrapped INT's as Harmon has.

Probably true, though there is something to be said for being at the right place at the right time.

BB said that there are going to be some tough decisions along the OL, so I'm sure they wanted to get a look at how Devey plays over the course of an entire game. He plays both G & T, so his versatility is a plus for him. Wouldn't be surprised if Wendell gets cut or Stork goes to IR at this point.
