Devey is getting a serious look. This may effect the OL more than anything else in the past couple of weeks (in addition to Stork continuing to be unavailable, and the signing of Manieri).

Let the battle continue!

OFFENSIVE LINE (from Reiss):

G/T Jordan Devey -- 91 of 91
G Josh Kline -- 51 of 91
OT Marcus Cannon -- 45 of 91
G Chris Barker -- 43 of 91
T Nate Solder -- 42 of 91
T Cameron Fleming -- 39 of 91
C Dan Connolly -- 35 of 91
C Braxston Cave -- 29 of 91
C Ryan Wendell -- 27 of 91
G Jon Halapio -- 26 of 91
G Logan Mankins -- 22 of 91
T Sebastian Vollmer -- 22 of 91

I think Devey is competing for a roster spot and is clearly on the bubble.
I think at 6'7 317lbs with the ability to play both G and T BB would love to discover he is good enough to make the roster. After a year on the ps, they want to be sure what they have or don't I think.

I see the OL shaping up like this:

Starters
Solder
Mankins
Connolly
Kline
Vollmer

#1 backup
Cannon

Remaining 2-3 spots are between (probably in order, IMO)
Wendell (too much experience and too cheap to cut. Connolly and Cannons versatility actually makes Wendell a versatile addition by extension)
Devey
Fleming
Barker
Halapio

Devey gives a lot of versatility if he can play.

The logjam is even worse than that -- you seem to have forgotten Stork. Looking at tea leaves, draft position, etc., there seem to be 10 OL on track to make the roster -- your 5 starters, Cannon, Wendell (for your reasons), Devey and the 2 fourth-round picks.

That's probably why a lot of people don't see both of Connolly and Wendell making it.

Bill wants to see if he can be an acceptable 4-position backup. He certainly has the size, but isn't particularly strong (being 6-6 naturally doesn't help his lifting production) or athletic.

If Stork's injury isn't bad enough to IR but is bad enough to keep him inactive for a few more weeks,
then I think that Wendy is kept at least past Opening Day. So the last spot on the OL might come
down to Devey or Halapio.

P.S.: I'm also not ready to concede a spot as a reserve, never mind as a starter, to Kline.
Would we really rather see Kline starting ahead of Cannon?

I have 2 questions/comments.

1) If we have Manieri as our emergency OT, we don't need, or have room for, Fleming.

2) Have we ever cut a 4th round draft pick before Game 1? IMHO, putting Stork on IR would likely be delaying his being cut until next year.

I do agree that our best 8-9 linemen are as you listed, with Fleming's fate dependent on whether we keep Manieri. The best plan, as you state, may be to try to place Fleming on the Practice Squad will full rookie pay. BTW, the best way to accomplish this may be to waive Fleming at the very last minute or even after the "final" cut.

I only sort of forgot Stork, because I don't see much chance of him making the roster after a month or more in the tub. PS or IR depending on the severity of the injury.

I just can't see having only Cannon as the only experienced backup.

From your list, I take away Stork, and I assume Fleming is either the 9th, or we send him to the ps, while keeping Maneri as the 3rd TE and emergency OT.
I'm not sure though, that this is better than keeping Fleming and using a OT as the 3rd TE.
But, having him on ps is as good as on the 53 to me.

Fleming vs Maneri
Pros of keeping Maneri
-Fleming goes to ps and would be gameday inactive anyway
-We have no TE to reasonably put on the ps to do the same thing with
-A 3rd TE as 3rd TE is better than an OT

Cons
-If Cannon is sitting on the bench anyway, why not use him (or slide over Solder) as the 3rd TE
-Miniscule chance of losing Fleming
-Could Williams become the 3rd TE instead

Perhaps after this weeks obligatory half dozen TE transactions it will be more clear.

I don't think history affects the decision. Stork and Fleming are not other years 4th rounders.
I think its a coincidence heavily based upon the fact that to take a player in the 4th round there is a level of talent that requires a benefit of doubt. Doesn't make any guarantees, just says you are dealing with a player with a talent level you respect.

Doubt that Stork would make it to the PS.

Sure he will. He hasn't seen the field in a month.
Who is going to cut a player who makes their team to give a roster spot to a guy who can't even practice?
OL needy teams all had their own draft picks, and many felt the OL taken in the 7th were as good as many taken in the 4th (that happens every year).
On top of all that he can only play C which limits the chance of carrying him until you figure out whether he can play while cutting someone probably more versatile.

The idea that ROOKIE players cut at cutdown won't make it through waivers is one of the biggest misconceptions going. If there are 4 total in the league this year I would be shocked.

Well put. I hadn't really thought of it that way. He probably will make it past waivers. Had really high hopes for the guy but at this point he is too far behind to make an impact this year. To be honest, I just wouldn't feel comfortable having them hand the hike and signal calling over to him just yet as well as protecting Brady. Dan Koppen was there from ota's, workouts, training camp and preseason. He was also the exception.

For the same reason Butler saw every snap on defense, they want to see what they have in them as a player. They want to see them against different levels of competition.

You are being extremely hopeful think Fleming and Stork both who were selected in the top 150 of the NFL draft will make it onto the practice squad and clear waivers. Even Halapio and early 6th round pick is questionable to make it through to the practice squad. I think you forget there are the bottom of the barrel teams who do not have the deep roster we have who would leap on those types of players.

I would agree missing the mental part of playing the position in camp is a bigger deal than missing the physical part.

I agree that this is a general misconception.

However, if I am a rebuilding team (there are many), I might be willing to have 3-4 developmental players on my roster, who I expect to be inactive in almost every game. This is especially true for the 9th OL, when almost every team has two inactive offensive linemen each week.

So, for me, offensive linemen and quarterbacks are especially vulnerable.

Sure he will. He hasn't seen the field in a month.

Kline was getting a serious look last night at his ability to play a blocking TE role. Seemed like every 3rd or 4th play you'd hear the ref announce "Number 67 is reporting as eligible". If he can play OL as well as fill in as a blocking TE from time to time, or if we still aren't ready come opening day at the position, then I'd say he has a VERY good chance of making the 53.

But the overriding difference is that you have to cut a player who made your team to add a guy who didn't make someone elses team. He wouldn't not be making out team because of an embarrassment of riches, we will be keeping JAG OLman.
To think that other teams see him as such an upgrade over the guys they keep that they will cut another to bring him in and hand him a roster spot, sight unseen when he couldn't even practice and got cut is a stretch to me.

I think what many people overlook is that on day 3, all 32 board are dramatically different, and some teams are taking players in round 7 (or even bringing them in as UDFA) that are higher on thier board than guys taken in the 4th.
Stork isn't a 4th round pick to 32 teams. He is a 4th round pick to the Patriots, and who know what he was to the other 31, and that has to be downgraded by the fact he has one week of NFL camp under his belt vs players who will survive a full camp.

Even if Stork or Fleming cleared waivers after being cut, it would be their choice to sign with the Pats PS or the PS of another team. Neither of them will be cut. From a roster composition standpoint, the only question left to be answered is whether Devey's versatility makes him more valuable in the coaches eyes than Wendall's experience. I think it will considering he's also been taking reps at C in practice. Barring injuries in the OL or a rash of injuries at other positions, the 9 OL will be: Solder, Mankins, Connolly, Cannon,Vollmer, Kline,Devey's,Fleming & Stork.

Belichick does not appear to consider Cannon to be a G expect as an emergency.
Out of whats left Kline looks to be the most likely starter to me, and he has at least a little experience.

Devey gives a lot of versatility if he can play.

It's pretty surreal to think we might actually have good enough reasons for cutting Fleming and Halapio already.

So, if the season started tomorrow, you would play without a backup center? You think that Devey's couple of reps in practice translates to Belichick having him active as the backup center? Cave or Barker would need to make the 53 if Wendell does not. We need a backup center to be active for Game One, and Stork is far from ready for that role.

Even if Stork or Fleming cleared waivers after being cut, it would be their choice to sign with the Pats PS or the PS of another team. Neither of them will be cut.
