So Josh Kline had an interesting night. It seemed like every 3rd or 4th play, you'd hear the ref announce his number as an eligible receiver. I'm actually rather okay with this, since we seem to be in a state of flux at tight end just now.

From his stat page:

Josh Kline was signed by the New England Patriots to the 53-man roster from the practice squad on Nov. 2, 2013 ... Originally signed by New England as a rookie free agent on (5/3/13) ... Released by New England (9/2/13) ... Signed by New England to the practice squad (9/4/13) ... Signed by New England to the 53-man roster from the practice squad (9/7/13) ... Released by New England (9/7/13) ... Signed by New England to the practice squad (9/13/13).

But he was sure getting a good look at the blocking TE duty, and why not? It fits with Coach's idea of a versatile football player. He doesn't need to catch unless the play breaks down, and he's open, although by then there's probably a host of other issues to deal with too. Like a QB getting sacked. But I digress.

Seems to me that if he can fill in as a blocking TE, then it'd be a handy thing, as he could rotate into the OL when needed, and come in as an eligible receiver and act as the blocking TE. At 6'3" and 295lbs, he's not Gronk, but he seemed to do well when called upon last night.

Thoughts?

With the log jams at RB and WR the 53 man roster needs all the room it can get.

Personally, I see no logjam at RB or WR. I see us carrying 4 RB, 1 FB, and 5 WR. As most have understood for months, Boyce may or may not beat out Thompkins or LaFell for a roster spot as the 5th WR.

Edelman, Dobson,Amendola,Thomkins, Lafell.

Slater,Tyms and Boyce are cut?

Slater stays. He's still the anchor of the ST's players. He has speed and a nose for the ball and until that starts dropping off, I suspect he'll be a lock for the team even as just a ST player.

I agree that he stays. But he will be listed as a WR on the roster which will make 6 wr's just to nitpick. Personally I hope they keep 7 as I'm routing for Tyms to make the team. Unfortunately I don't think he has any ps eligibility left.

I think this was being done with Solder as well, although the ref wasn't announcing the eligibility nearly as much. I am guessing that maybe this was due to him lining up as an actual TE, or just the fact that he wasn't getting as many TE eligibility looks as Kline.

I really don't know. I'd have to re-watch the game and look for that specific aspect. I do know that Solder has gotten TE looks plenty of times in both the reg season and this preseason as well, though. I believe that we had a few OL take TE reps tonight at various points in the game.

As far as Kline goes, I think he looked fine taking over for Mankins last December in the win down in BAL where we ran the ball down their throats. I also think that he has shown enough to warrant a spot on the 53 man roster as an interior lineman, who can play either guard position.

As you stated later, you're nitpicking. I never suggested that Slater would be cut. Tyms is not eligible for the 53 man squad; but yes I would cut him if a choice needed to be made. The issue is Boyce.

Brian Tyms has PS eligibility remaining, so he could in theory, be cut in the hope that he'd clear waivers and move to the PS. He has one accrued season of less than 9 games on the active 46 man roster.

The problem is that he may not make it through the waiver process, so we should probably keep him just to make sure. He wouldn't even count until game #5 anyway, which at that time someone will have gotten hurt or shown that they don't belong anyway.

The official Patriots website lists Slater as a WR, so for this exercise we should as well. A couple of weeks ago, we assumed that we'd be keeping 7 WRs (including Slater). Now with the Tyms situation, it will be 8. We aren't going to carry 8 WRs, but for the first month it won't matter. I believe he's in direct competition with Boyce, to be honest with you.

Well, Tyms is suspended for the first 4 games of the regular season, so he wouldn't count against the 53 anyway. He can be a decision by the time week 5 rolls around.

So, the big choice may be to keep Boyce initially, then decide between he/Tyms in week 5.

Of course there's a chance they could keep many more than usual at the position of WR, but 7-8 is really pushing the realistic limit.

In the end, I'm not as sure that Boyce even makes the initial 53 even with Tyms' suspension, but that's just me.

Some OL this year will catch a Tom Ashworth Memorial TD pass.
