What would it take for you to stop watching football?

the big problem with the UFC is they flew too close to the sun, they went from maybe 12 events a year to something like 35 events. you've got the ppv events, the Ultimate fight nights, The ultimate fighter finales, and the Fight nights on Fox. They have not developed enough talent to fill all of those events with solid fights, and its resulted in tons of really really bad cards that are just not worth watching.

It would be like adding 12 more teams to the NFL. there are just not enough elite players to fill those rosters.

Now the thing that would make me stop watching football, Phil sims doing announcing with dan dierdorf for a broncos vs patriots game. I don't think i could handle the amount of bukakae those two would lay down on manning.

There are some really drastic things that could drive me away overnight, but they're either extremely unlikely, or extremely unlikely to ever be proven to the point where I can accept them. For example, if I found our everything was scripted like professional wrestling, I would lose interest immediately.

As for the gradual fall due to rule changes, etc, that would take a VERY long time to turn me off, and I get the feeling the NFL would feel the effects from other parts of the fanbase before it got bad enough to bother me.

I can envision a scenario though where the rules have changed the game, and I don't even really notice it until the Pats win a Super Bowl, and after the initial seconds of euphoria I realize that they didn't really win playing football... they won playing some similar kind of game and the satisfaction just won't be there. And once the drive to see your team win a championship is diminished, I'll probably stop watching.

I only watch playoff games, then turn it off if they're losing.

Long Island medium reached out to my Dad --- he is still watching from above.

She also told me he asked her where the hell is Mayo this week......
LOL! Seriously, the word is his wife is about to give birth and there may have been some complications.

Another ten years of Goodell.

Someone ranked this funny, but it's true. It's terrifying to think of what the game could potentially become after another 10 years of him being in charge. Hopefully some sort of massive controversy or scandal will happen and force him to step down.

Can't quite believe this hasn't happened already, figuratively if not literally.

It does, however, raise an important question for group discussion:

If Commissioner Goodell and Fnordcircle were to have a love child, what would it look like?

The interesting thing, of course, is that the people whose income and net worth are actually at risk (i.e. the owners) think Goodell is doing a terrific job. In 2012 they extended his contract (then set to expire in 2014) for another five years so that it now doesn't expire until March 2019.

SportsBusiness Daily said:
The NFL has extended Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract another five years to March '19, a development that comes at the conclusion of perhaps the most successful season in NFL history. His contract had been due to expire on March '14. In the last year, he negotiated a new 10-year CBA that triggered an economic shift to the owners, and recently completed lucrative new TV deals that mirror the length of the labor deal

If a Jerry Jones bought the Patriots.

He started out acting like a kid on Christmas morning, then tactlessly fired Landry. Was a PR disaster the next six months, accumulating in saying the cheerleaders were: "pick of the litter." Lucked out hiring Jimmy Johnson then parted with him because he was jealous of the attention he got...last (or close to) straw was on draft day 1994 Jimmy consulting Cleveland HC Bill Belichick without talking to Jerry. ( http://www.texasmonthly.com/story/devil-and-mr-jones?fullpage=1 ) So Jerry has sworn to win a championship as a mastermind owner, GM, and just a puppet coach to prove he is not a football idiot. Results? Since 1997, .500, two playoff victories, never been to the Conference championship like Cleveland, Detroit, Houston. Daily, Jerry has to get in the news with nonsense like "I nearly drafted Manziel"

Only reason he hired Parcells was so Cowboys Stadium could be built. Now he has revenue that will mitigate any losses if/when people stop following the Cowboys. He may be laughing on the way to the bank, but if he is just slightly sober on his deathbed, he is going to realize that since 1994 he has convinced the rest of the world he is a complete football idiot.

Robert Kraft may not be the face of the Patriots, but thank him for sourcing football matters to experts.

A lot.

A thoughtful newspaper or magazine article explaining the moral hazards of enjoying the sport would probably do it for me.

That is because they could give a crap about the product as long as revenue is growing. They risk destroying the game so that they will die with 11.4 billion in assets instead of 11.3 Billion.

What a video on Peak Football might look like
  • 1920: Fans on wooden bleachers in the cold
  • 1950: Fans on metal bleachers
  • 1965: Fans in plastic seats
  • 1975: Fans indoors
  • 1995: Fans in suites
  • 2000: Fans paying to see practice wearing $100 jerseys, etc.
  • 2020: NFL in London
  • 2030: "Turn out the lights: The party's over..." TV is shut off

Their profits grew during that time, but you could easily make the argument that Goodell had nothing to do with that. Still, they liked where things were heading at the time. If the game keeps getting tinkered with, people will eventually have enough. My dad, who used to be the biggest NFL fan and apologist I knew, now barely watches due to the fact that defenses are barely allowed to play. Last year was sort of a renaissance for him due to the fact that defense was back (he loved the 49ers/Panthers and 49ers/Seahawks contests) but now he's back to barely paying attention to it with the new "point of emphasis".

Goodell has done a pretty good job at keeping the league alive for the future. Yes some here want to have a game where you can hit each other in the head as hard as possible(I do not) so they hate the new rules. But with all the news about the dangers of concussions it just wouldn't be possible to keep the league alive with those helmet hits. Goodell has taken steps that can allow the league to survive. He has done some bad things too. Like suspensions where really seems to have ****ed up But decreasing concussions is important in the long run.

Hell, look at the Seahawks for example. They have shown that you can still hit hard as **** within the new rules.

What has he done to help the game? Kraft was the one who negotiated the great new TV deal and almost single handedly saved the CBA negotiations. Goodell's push for more regular season games and expanding the playoffs may damage the product beyond repair.
