I cant see them cutting Boyce either not with how bad their return game is right now

I think there are some factors that would point to Boyce staying, one being the return game that you mention. Another is the fact that he was a (high--top several picks) 4th round pick with lots of upside who is still getting acclimated. Belichick typically gives top 1-3 rd picks the benefit of the doubt for the first 2 years (not a rule written in stone, just ask Kevin O'Connell), so some think that Boyce has that going for him, even though he's technically a mid-round/4th round pick.

However, the fact remains that Boyce will have to show that he is making progress as an actual wide receiver, especially with improved competition this year. There's not much debate that Boyce is currently the low man on the WR depth chart, as far as realistic options are concerned. If that weren't enough, Brian Tyms (someone who most of us did not consider a "realistic" option) has come on very nicely, adding to the log jam even more. Now, Boyce has one more to deal with.

I would have a difficult time envisioning Boyce as being a gameday active on the 46 man roster every Sunday just for kickoff return duty. The job has diminished a bit in the past couple/few years with the rule change, and if Boyce isn't going to contribute in the WR game on any level whatsoever, I'd think that we'd have many other players who would justify the use of that gameday active spot. If he were consistently bringing KOR's to the house in TC and preseason, that'd be one thing. I'm sure there are some players who would warrant the KOR "only" designation, but I personally don't see Boyce as one of them. Just my opinion.

That would be a better idea if it weren't in blatant contradiction of the rules.

Well, let's put him on IR and then activate him.
