Pats trade happy today and it is making it me sad: Traded Late Round pick for Jerel Worthy

My first thought was bad sign for Jones and/or Silica.
My second thought was might be a bad sign for Will Smith??

While it may mean that Siligia/Jones are going to be significant recovery times, it also means that we're not going to settle for guys like Joe Vellano to definitely take their place either. I'm glad to see the added competition, myself. I expect another DL to be signed in a couple of weeks when more cuts are being made.

But neither of these guys is practicing, so joining late and not yet ready to compete.

The thing is Worthy struggled with the two gap in Green Bay. If the Pats stay in the two gap this year, he is likely to struggle. If the Pats' defense philosophy switch comes with a switch to an one gap scheme that allows Worthy to pin his ears back and rush the passer, he could be a major steal.

But then again, he may not even pass the physical tomorrow and the trade could be nullified.

Specifically, Carroll often calls for at least one defensive lineman to two-gap in an effort to get the best of both worlds: With one or two linemen two-gapping to clog additional running lanes, the remaining defenders are free to attack their gaps or drop into pass coverage

I think the pats have been trying to move to more of a 4-3 under where one side 2 gaps and the other 1 gaps for a couple years now, dating back to haynesworth, if not earlier.

I dunno what this means for Jones/Siliga, since the two guys that the Pats just traded for are both injured and not currently practicing. I'd be more worried for Jones/Siliga if they were trading for healthy guys.

I guess we really can't predict the moves until having some better idea as to how close they are to practicing.

I don't know if it means anything for anybody.
fans just find out about this stuff, so they make it out to be some kind of reactionary thing when it might've been simmering for quite some time, and teams are now firming up their final rosters as cutdowns approach.

worthy was probably going to be cut, so the pack got a pick for him that they can bank instead of cutting.
it's pretty smart if you can do it.

green was probably also looking at a cut, so the pats just swapped him instead.

A 2015 move? Like the RB they snatched a few weeks ago?

So we traded for this guy?

I never knew his last name was Worthy.

Shocking.

I wanted the Pats to draft Worthy (or Kendall Reyes) in the 2nd round that year, but we took Tavon Wilson instead.

Now we get Worthy for much less than a 2nd. Hopefully he works out in New England. He has the talent. Not sure what his problem was in Green Bay though. He hasn't done anything in the NFL yet.

He was a part time player as a rookie, had 2.5 sacks, not to bad overall in terms of play for a rookie and then he missed all of last season. Many see this as a sign that we needed depth, I see it as the Patriots seeing an opportunity to get a very talented player with upside at a low cost.

So we traded for this guy?

This is actually a player I watched a lot and followed somewhat. Boils down to a very talented player with some work ethic probs in college and now injuries in the NFL. He has slightly more raw talent than Kendall Reyes of SanDiego. Little bigger/ stronger just as quick/athletic as Reyes who has been successful.

On the bright side if he had Kendall Reyes work ethic he could have been #2 DT from his draft without question. If Kenbrells,Jones, or Dominique"s work/training ethic rubs off on him and he has no injuries he could be a very legit Starting DT just short of pro bowl talent. Otherwise he has good talent but not enough to skate by in the NFL much less make an impact. And trading for him was pointless.

If you want to be optimistic $$ can light up a players enthusiasm. Many players breakout in seasons 3 or 4 as $$ Well from rookie contract gets dry. If they have coaching/leadership/hard working players around them as role models they fire up their work ethic. Especially when they see hard working players around them closing in on big $ contracts while their lazy selves are worried about so much as even still collecting an NFL paycheck. That's how many players nearly forgotten about as talents suddenly breakout from nowhere when most fans no longer had expectations for that player. The $$ suddenly makes them start practicing harder and longer/train for quickness/flexibility/ endurance and sometimes even investigate PEDs for a little extra help. When they begin wondering if they will have a spot on an NFL roster. But I wouldn't expect a breakout from Jerel especially right away. Even if he does pick up Chandler Jones' work ethic it will take time for it to show on the field.

Source familiar with Worthy deal said conditional pick Packers get from Patriots is a 7. He has to make final 53 for Packers to get it.

I'm wondering if they might stash him on IR if he fails the physical, even though they have the option to void the deal. Would that be a possibility? It would give him a year to get healthy and learn a good work ethic, or show the team he's not going to buckle down and do he work. They showed the willingness to carry a prospect with Armistead, could this turn into the sme kind of thing?

Actually this guy occasionally teased the packers Staff that he could be the disruptive pass rusher to compliment Clay. And that he could end up their best DT. His raw skill/upside is considerable. But his work ethic is below even average. if he even makes roster he should be an impact player. Due to a players work ethic on the patriots is above average as standard. Take a round one talent who has been lazy and induce a very good work ethic in him and he could be an impact player. If he picks up Chandler Jones's work ethic in conditioning/training/technique and discipline and he could be a pro bowl caliber player. However if he even makes this team then he should be a very good player at least. Because if he becomes a long term patriot then we know his work ethic has improved by leaps and bounds due to team standards are a far better than average work ethic. Couple his raw talent with a much improved work ethic and he will be a steal. Of course players like Kenbrell and Jones work ethic stand out and are better than the already high standards our team requires. That kind of work ethic could take Worthy to pro bowl consideration. For now we would be happy if his work ethic heats up to patriot standards.

Jerel Worthy had good workout #'s. If he would have had a great work ethic he was probably capable of an elite combine performance. Better work ethic and he likely jumps over 30 inches, broad jumps well over 9', easily runs a sub 5 second 40 and reps well over 30. A strong Work ethic and his 3 cone could have been rediculous as it wasn't far from some good LBs.

Projects like a raw talent like this guy is part of what makes us so good. We have the leadership/work ethic/team standards and atmosphere to not only get a player like this focused and working hard but instill him to want to do it and feel excited with new enthusiasm/excitement and pride in the game and his performance. And to be excited and motivated to be a better player with increased physical talent like quickness/power/endurance as well as a much better player in technique/skill while playing more intelligent/ alert.

I know that's the more optimistic side and most hopeful production we could ever get from this guy. But it is realistic and he could have competed for the top DT spot from his draft with a better work ethic or at least 2nd most talented DT from his draft. He did OK in the draft/combine for a player considered lazy/unmotivated on practice field/training rooms. If he picks up our work ethic and way of doing things he could do far more than just contribute.

If Worthy becomes a contributing game-day active by the POs, then his presence will begin to atone
for the mistake that is the Error Repeater.

The news here is the subtext about one or both returning but injured former starters, not the longshot stiff acquired in the trade who the vulgar optimists are ready to spin as a miscast Hall of Famer in waiting.
