Hard to believe. He was always one of my favorites. "Hook" was one of my favorite movies as a child. R.I.P. to a great actor.

This is just hopeful thinking, but perhaps losing a comedic genius such as Williams to the tragedy of suicide will result in more attention to the thousands of others - many of whom are gifted in their own right - who also take their own lives in the midst of depression.

We've issued a loud and resounding "no more" as a society to drunk driving and the 11,000 deaths a year. Yet we're collectively silent about the 39,000 suicides each year.

That's the same number as die of breast cancer each year for which the NFL spends nearly a month donning pink to draw attention to cancer. Conversely one player wears green shoes to draw attention to mental illness at a time when the NFL's own players are taking their own lives - and he draws a $10,000 fine

Our culture has a tough time talking about things like this (let alone some of the underlying issues contributing to a widespread anxiety and malise among people in general)

So maybe Williams, because of who he is and what he represented to many (even though he battled addiction for a long time as well) becomes the wake up call for some that we need to devote a bit more attention to these issues.

I'm really surprised how upset I am about this. Great comedian and actor. He always seemed sad to me, poor guy. World According To Garp is one of my favorites.

This hits too close to home.

One of my mothers favorite actors. If she were alive she would be in serious mourning today, hope she gets to say hello.

I even enjoyed some of his smaller movies like The Survivors and The Best Of Times. He sure did bring a lot of laughter and happiness into people lives for a at least a couple of hours at a time anyways. He does leave behind a strong legacy that won't be easily forgotten anytime soon. Really feel bad for his wife and 3 kids. Always the victims when these tragedies happen..

One of my favorite actors of all time, he will be missed by everyone.

So many creative people fight depression. It's sad.

Last week one of my favorite comedian actors here in brazil, a guy I grew up watching, also killed himself by hanging with a belt at the age of 35.

Now Robin, also one of my favorite actors, such a nice smile, like that uncle you never have anything to complain.

Depression is rough business and In this world where people are struggling so badly to make money always In a hurry, always worried, it does not help at all, this is so sad.

A brilliant actor and comedian. Such a devastating loss. RIP Robin. My condolences to his friends and family.

I think this is going to shake a lot of people.

Sad day for humankind. RIP

Very very shocking.....RIP.......... One of the truly great actors of all time

I hope that this causes all of the celebrities that were close to him to donate millions and millions of dollars to suicide prevention in his name.

So sad to hear. Rest in peace Robin. Nanu nanu.

grew up with mork and mindy, favourite TV program when i was young. great comedian and actor and came over as being a loving kind and considerate man. taken from his family and us far too early. RIP Robin

Echo everyone's condolences...he did look sad at times. To think of how many people he made laugh and will continue to make laugh for a long time. He was such a caring and compassionate person who could not come to terms with the fact that the world can be such an unfair place. I hate that this happened to such a kind man..

Am genuinely gutted by the news. ****.....
If there isn't a better performance than him playing Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting I just don't know. Wish it ended differently for him.

I can't recall (in my own lifetime, being 25) a death that was so felt by everyone. I honestly feel that everyone had a genuine like for Robin. What a wonderful person and influence on people of all ages. Such a sad, sad day.

I'll go for John Lennon

A memorial has been made by the bench where the famous Good Will Hunting scene took place. I wish I could go see it. RIP, Robin. This news has gutted me. :(
