Tyms Suspended 4 games

I think Tyms is this year's Bam Childress. Everyone will fall in love with him because he looks like a stud against the scrubs in the preseason and will never see the field.

To be sure, the unknown WR who becomes a camp phenom but never amounts to anything is an annual tradition. But on the flip side, few of the camp phenoms have Tyms' raw size and athleticism...and besides, last year's model actually went on to catch 32 passes in the regular season. Hope springs eternal!

So the NFL.Com no longer mentions Tyms but there is no mention of why the story was changed.

Nothing like seeing a miracle.

One small nitpick is that we really don't know for sure what the substance is/was, since the NFL doesn't comment.

It is definitely safe to say that more than one player has used the "old Adderall" excuse, since Adderall is politically correct and doesn't reek of the negatively that say, other PED substances would.

The biggest thing that I don't understand is that if one really were ADD and seriously taking this medication, why wouldn't they just alert the team and the league the same way they are supposed to do?

This is like saying "we'll accept your medical marijuana license if you just notify us," and dozens of players are like---"I forgot to fill out the right paperwork...." With agents, team doctors, NFLPA team members, etc, you'd think that the process wouldn't be that difficult.

(not meaning to necessarily suggest that Tyms isn't truly ADD, for whatever it's worth)

Umm.. Yes, we do know what the substance was.. Tyms was straightforward about it and described what happened exactly.

Next time we posters break a story I am going to create a blog about it

Was on the NFL site and was reading their Moving Up and Down piece

Tyms was listed under Down

Brian Tyms, New England Patriots: One juggled pass away from six receptions for over 150 yards a pair of touchdowns against the Redskins on Thursday night, Tyms appeared to be making a run at a roster spot until his four-game suspension was announced the next day. A former practice squad member of the Dolphins and Browns, Tyms might have lost the best NFL opportunity he will ever receiver.

Uh not really. Means the Pats have 4 extra weeks to decide on him. They also knew he would be suspended just like they knew Browner would miss the first 4 games

Also hysterical that this guy thought Tyms got suspended on Friday instead of months ago. You write for the NFL, you can't take a few minutes to double check.

Someone from NFL.com must have seen you write this because it's no longer on that page. It also shows the page was updated 2 hours and 23 minutes after first published.

I had tweeted Ian Rapaport and Chris Wesseling that Tyms was suspended on April 21st and that I had tweeted about it on Friday and then my tweet was retweeted by Patriots beat writers

And of course everyone suspended for PEDs in professional sports is 100% truthful with their explanation. Certainly they would never lie.

As I said at the bottom of my post, I'm not "calling Tyms out," but rather pointing to the fact that ALL National Football League players immediately claim the old Adderall excuse.

We have no idea whether or not he is telling the truth, or if any of the other 50+ or so players (just this year) who have claimed "Adderall" are telling the truth. Since the NFL does not comment, every single player is going to claim that they have ADD and that they need to take Adderall. It's the P.C. thing to do, as opposed to letting people think that they took other kinds of P.E.D's.

If he really does have ADD and needs to take Adderall, then shame on him, his agent, his personal family doctor, his team doctors, and our NFLPA rep for not having him sign a piece of paper stating so---because that's all it takes to get the exemption.

At some point people have to start to wonder why all of these "ADD/Adderall" players don't sign the paper they need to sign, right? At this point, you would think that the word has gotten around that if you take Adderall, you need to fill out an exempt form....

And of course everyone suspended for PEDs in professional sports is 100% truthful with their explanation. Certainly they would never lie.

Exactly. This was the point of my comment. Until the NFL decides to comment (which may never happen), just about every single player uses the ADD/"I need Adderall" excuse.

We have no idea who is telling the truth and who isn't.

exactly supa......if he really had an adderall prescription, he would have known to get the green light from the league......ive taken adderall.....and ive taken testosterone......adderall "might" only boost performance short term because its a stimulant.....long term, it would be detrimental......kind of like a sprinter taking ephedra the day of the race.....but that sprinter would be stupid to be on ephedra long term during training.....testosterone, on the other hand, is a long term performance enhancer....as are other steroids and hgh.......

its only the idiots that get caught for peds in the nfl.....or the guys that push the envelope too far......but that might be a tautology

Again--I'm not meaning to necessarily call Tyms out, or suggest that he's definitely lying. I'm simply stating that the NFL policy states that they don't comment whatsoever, so the popular excuse from about 99% of the players is that "I have ADD, and I take Adderall." Until the NFL decides to change this policy, we'll never really know who is lying and who is telling the truth.

Of course, some of them actually do need to take it, and there are some examples where lines of communication get crossed up between agent, coach, doctor, and league; but you'd think that if you REALLY did take Adderall for medical reasons and were trying to win a spot in the NFL, it'd be one of the first things that you'd address at some point after walking in the building.

Hell, I'd have both all of my agent, team, and family doctor send proof not only to the league, but I'd probably have some kind of proof that I notified Goodell myself. At this point in time after seeing hundreds of suspensions and having a good amount of money at stake (not to mention dreams), one would think that some of these player claimed "Adderal" suspensions are total BS--and they are.

That doesn't mean that I think Tyms' was, only that it brought the subject about yet again.

This is a good read about Tyms, and his situation. I don't think we'll find too many rooting against him.

Patriots Notebook: Tyms took a lonely road | Boston Herald

For the record, he says that he should've brought the matter to the attention of the league that "I take this from time to time." He also claims that it costs money to "get these things situated, money that I didn't have at the time."

He's definitely easy to like from someone like myself who shares a lot of similarities in his back story, so I'll be rooting like hell for him. I think we're all excited to see more of him in the preseason, although I'm not holding my breath that he'll be making the 53 man roster right off the bat this year.

Let's see if the story is correct a kid in foster care who is abused, subsequently diagnosed with ADD is prescribed Adderall, according to him at age 9, has been on and off this script since...

His crime is that he did not let the NFL know about his prescription... this has happened before to other players...

IMO he should be rewarded for not winding up "behind high walls".. blanket "zero tolerance" policies aggravate me... otoh the 4 game suspension may work to his advantage.

How do we know he's telling the truth? Nobody is going to call BS no matter what he says.

In his practice notes Ben Volin gives Tyms a "thumbs up" after yesterday's practice saying that his 4 game suspension may actually increase his chances of making the roster. Of course, He never elaborates this opinion. What r posters take on this?

The Patriots do not have to waive Tyms at the roster cutdowns later this month. Keep him on the suspended list at a cap cost of $378,529. If he is not needed after the end of the suspension, waive him and get the $378,529 back.

My take is that he's wised up and started reading PatsFans before writing. ;)

It does keep the team from having to make any tough decisions at WR (e.g. Tyms vs. Boyce) at the squeeze period. On the other hand, they already have Browner returning at the same time and will have to make a cut for him.

Exactly Tyms migh be a blessing in disguise we have a horrible record of Drafting WR's up until Aaron Dobson and the jury is coming in on Boyce lets hope it's a hung one.;) We made out well with Edelman and Thompkins looks like a keeper. Knowing how Fragile this group really is "IF" Tyms looks like the real deal it might be well worth it to keep him. You cannot Teach Size and Speed and he's well set in those areas if he's familar with our system that's gravy. I seen too many other guys like Tyms on other Teams around the league and often wondered...why cant we get a guy like that, the tides might be changing.

In one way I see what he means. We can keep him after training camp and doesn't have to make the choice then. If a WR gets injured during those 4 weeks and is set to miss games after those weeks then Tyms chance of making the roster increases.

But on the other hand he will miss 4 weeks of practise. Time that someone else like Boyce can use to improve. Unless a WR gets injured for the season we will have to make the choice between Tyms and someone else. I don't think that it is that big blessing some people claim it to be for Tyms because the choice will have to be made. But now that choice has to be made when the other receivers have gotten 4 more weeks to improve on the field.

Sure Tyms can be in the meetings, lift weights and do all that stuff(according to ESPN), but he can't practise football with the team. But it does give him 4 extra weeks to learn the playbook and show that he is a pro in the meeting room. So it kind of goes both ways.
